Washington, DC, October 4, 2010 – For nearly a year before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the British government of Prime Minister Tony Blair collaborated closely with the George W. Bush administration to produce a far starker picture of the threat from Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction (WMD) than was justified by intelligence at the time, according to British and American government documents posted today by the National Security Archive.

    Haiti Cholera Protest Turns Violent

    15 November, 2010 — Common Dreams

Protesters clash with UN peacekeepers in second-largest city of Cap Hatien over epidemic that has killed more than 900.

Clashes and gunfire have broken out between protesters and UN troops in Haiti, where a cholera epidemic has claimed over 900 lives in about three weeks.

Protesters, who hold Nepalese UN peacekeepers responsible for the cholera outbreak, threw stones and threatened to set fire to a base in the country’s second-largest city of Cap Hatien on Monday, Haitian radio and eyewitnesses reported.

There are also unconfirmed reports that five protesters and one UN peacekeeper have been shot dead.

The UN disputes the claims against the Nepalese mission, but the suspicion persists.

    Troubled relationship

Al Jazeera’s Cath Turner, en route to Cap Hatien, said that the situation “has been brewing for a while” with “very tense relations” between the UN peacekeepers stationed there and the local community.

“Back in August, a 16-year-old boy was found dead – he was hanging from a tree. And the Haitians believed that he was killed by the troops up there,” she said. But the troops claimed the boy had committed suicide, and there was never a formal investigation into the boy’s death, she added.

“As you can see, this is really the next phase of this deadly cholera outbreak – this real frustration against the troops – and these people in this community also believe that the UN troops, particularly the Nepalese, are responsible for bringing cholera into this country.”

There are Nepalese as well as Chilean troops in Cap Hatien.

This isn’t the first protest in Haiti, where crowds have taken to the streets, expressing anger at the Haitian government and the UN for failing to contain the outbreak.

    Spreading epidemic

There are now cholera cases in every part of Haiti and UN agencies expect a “significant increase” in the number of people affected, a top UN official said on Monday.

“We have cases in every department,” Nigel Fisher, a UN humanitarian co-ordinator in Haiti, said.

The UN and Haiti government had started a review of the epidemic and Fisher said that officials “foresee a significant increase” in the number of cases. He also said it was not unusual for hundreds of thousands of people to be hit by cholera in such an epidemic but added that many would be mild cases.

The Haitian health ministry’s latest figures put the number of dead at 917 with more than 14,600 people treated in hospitals.

Ruling on Behalf of Wall Street’s “Super Rich”: The Financial End Time has Arrived By Prof. Michael Hudson

    16 November, 2010 — Global Research

Now that President Obama is almost celebrating his bipartisan willingness to renew the tax cuts for the super-rich enacted under George Bush ten years ago, it is time for Democrats to ask themselves how strongly they are willing to oppose an administration that looks like Bush-Cheney III. Is this what they expected by Mr. Obama’s promise to rise above partisan politics – by ruling on behalf of Wall Street, now that it is the major campaign backer of both parties?

It is a reflection of how one-sided today’s class war has become that Warren Buffet has quipped that “his” side is winning without a real fight being waged. No gauntlet has been thrown down over the trial balloon that the president and his advisor David Axelrod have sent up over the past two weeks to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% for “just” two more years. For all practical purposes the euphemism “two years” means forever – at least, long enough to let the super-rich siphon off enough more money to bankroll enough more Republicans to be elected to make the tax cuts permanent.

17 November, 2010 MEDIA LENS: Correcting for the distorted vision of the corporate media

MEDIA BURY DOCUMENTS REVEALING ISRAEL’S DELIBERATE POLICY OF NEAR-STARVATION FOR GAZA

Israel has been forced to reveal what Palestinians and other observers on the ground have known for a long time: that the blockade of Gaza is state policy intended to inflict collective punishment, not to bolster Israeli “security”.

An Israeli human rights group has won a legal battle to compel the Israeli government to release three important documents. These outline state policy for permitting the transfer of goods into Gaza prior to the May 31 attack on the peace flotilla in which nine people were killed by Israeli forces. The group, Gisha – Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, is demanding Israeli transparency. Meanwhile, Israel refuses to release documents on the current version of blockade policy which was “eased” after international condemnation following the flotilla attack.

    200 Israeli war Criminals

    17 November, 2010 — israeliwarcriminals.zzl.org/

The following information was received anonymously; presumably from a member of the Israeli Military. It was presented as follows:

war-criminals.jpgUnderlining the following people is an act of retribution and affront. They are the direct perpetrators, agents for the state of Israel that in Dec.- Jan. 2008- 2009 attacked scores of people in the besieged Gaza. The people listed here held positions of command at the time of the attack therefore not only did they perform on behalf of a murderous state mechanism but actively encouraged other people to do the same. They bear a distinctive personal responsibility. They range from low-level field commanders to the highest echelons of the Israeli army. All took an active and direct role in the offensive.

In underlining them we are purposefully directing attention to individuals rather than the static structures through which they operate. We are aligning people with actions. It is to these persons and others, Like them, to which we must object and bring our plaints to bear upon.

This information was pirated. We encourage people to seek out other such similar information, it is readily available in the public sphere and inside public officials’ locked cabinets. This is a form of resistance that can be effectively sustained for a long while.

This project for one, has only just begun, do your bit so that this virtual list may come to bear upon the physical.

Michael E. Mann: A scientist in the crosshairs of climate-change denial

16 November, 2010 — Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

    Abstract

mann.jpgThe Penn State climate scientist who helped author the ‘hockey stick’ global warming temperature graph describes the campaign to discredit him following the theft of emails, including some he wrote, from servers at England’s University of East Anglia. Climate-change denial groups said the emails showed unethical conduct, but scientific organizations and academic panels said this was not the case, defending Mann and the credibility of climate science. Mann believes the widespread media coverage contributed to the failure of the US Senate to take action on carbon dioxide emission controls this summer. But he cites polls showing that the matter may not have compromised public belief in climate science and expresses optimism that policymakers will force emissions reductions in time to avert truly catastrophic changes to Earth’s climate.

What happened at Millbank? By Laurie Penny

    15 November, 2010 — SocialistWorker.org – NewStatesman.com

A huge demonstration of students and their supporters in London last week–twice as large as organizers had hoped for–rocked British politics as the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government faced the strongest act of defiance yet against its program of austerity.

The protest was called by the National Union of Students and the University and College Union against the government’s plan to nearly triple student fees to $14,500 a year, while slashing university teaching budgets by 40 percent. But protesters were raising their voices on many other issues as well.

During a march through central London, hundreds of students spontaneously forced their way into the Conservative Party headquarters and occupied it for several hours. Predictably, the media portrayed the demonstrators as a small handful ‘bent on violence,’ but those who participated saw the occupation as a form of direct action against the much greater economic and social violence being planned by the government.

Journalist Laurie Penny, who writes a blog for the New Statesman, was on the scene of the protest and wrote this description of what took place.

The Cruelty and Stupidity of the Government’s Welfare Reforms By Andy Worthington

    12 November, 2010 — Andy Worthington

Journalists like to portray Iain Duncan Smith, the work and pensions secretary, as a caring, decent man, but while this may be true in his personal life, politically he is a ruthless ideologue, whose white paper on welfare reform, unveiled yesterday, reveals that he is, to be blunt, monstrously cruel and stupid. In the Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Mary Riddell provided a cautionary warning about how this would-be reformer’s mind works, which harks back uncomfortably to the Social Darwinism of the Victorian age. Duncan Smith, she wrote, “believes that dysfunctional lives are the root cause of poverty, while the centre Left thinks, correctly, that the reverse is true.”

Seumas Milne: The Palestinians of Israel are poised to take centre stage

    10 November, 2010 — The Guardian

With the peace process going nowhere, common experience on both sides of the Green Line is creating a new reality

    settler.jpg
A Jewish settler throws wine at a Palestinian woman

In a quiet street in the Sheikh Jarrah district of occupied East Jerusalem 88-year-old Rifka al-Kurd is explaining how she came to live in the house she and her husband built as Palestinian refugees in the 1950s. As she speaks, three young ultra-orthodox Jewish settlers swagger in to stake their claim to the front part of the building, shouting abuse in Hebrew and broken Arabic: ‘Arab animals’, ‘shut up, whore’.

There is a brief physical confrontation with Rifka’s daughter as the settlers barricade themselves in to the rooms they have occupied since last winter. That was when they finally won a court order to take over the Kurd family’s extension on the grounds that it was built without permission – which Palestinians in Jerusalem are almost never granted. It is an ugly scene, the settlers’ chilling arrogance underpinned by the certain knowledge that they can call in the police and army at will.

Conversations with Fidel Castro: The Dangers of a Nuclear War By Fidel Castro Ruz and Michel Chossudovsky

    13 November, 2010 — Global Research

    Introductory Note

From October 12 to 15, 2010, I had extensive and detailed discussions with Fidel Castro in Havana, pertaining to the dangers of nuclear war, the global economic crisis and the nature of the New World Order. These meetings resulted in a wide-ranging and fruitful interview.

The first part of this interview published by Global Research and Cuba Debate focuses on the dangers of nuclear war.

The World is at a dangerous crossroads. We have reached a critical turning point in our history.

This interview with Fidel Castro provides an understanding of the nature of modern warfare: Were a military operation to be launched against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the US and its allies would be unable to win a conventional war, with the possibility that this war could evolve towards a nuclear war.
