SPIRIT OF HUMANITY SETS SAIL FOR GAZA

14 January, 2009

Larnaca, 14 January 2009 – At 10:30 Wednesday morning, under bright blue Mediterranean skies, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY sailed from the port of Larnaca. Undeterred by Israeli threats of interception at sea, 21 passengers and crew waved to friends and press on shore, committed to our mission of delivering doctors, journalists, human rights observers and a shipment of medical supplies to assist the civilian population of Gaza during this emergency. The unarmed mercy ship is expected to arrive in Gaza early Thursday morning.

An earlier attempt to reach Gaza on Monday, 12 January had to be postponed when the ship experienced mechanical difficulties at sea. The ship returned to Cyprus for repairs before departing again for Gaza this morning.

“Israel has an obligation to protect the civilian population that it occupies” stated Free Gaza delegation leader Huwaida Arraf. “Since Israel continues to violate this obligation, we will continue to do whatever we can to deliver badly needed medical supplies, food, and to transport
medical personnel, journalists and human rights workers to help and to witness the devastation Israel has wrought.”

The physicians on board include a reconstructive plastic surgeon and an orthopedic surgeon and another physician. All three doctors will bring crucial assistance to the exhausted and overwhelmed hospital staff in Gaza where emergency resources don’t begin to meet the need.

“British Jews Call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel”

We the undersigned are all of Jewish origin. When we see the dead and bloodied bodies of young children, the cutting off of water, electricity and food, we are reminded of the siege of the Warsaw Ghetto. When Dov Weisglass, an adviser to the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, talked of putting Gazans ‘on a diet’ and the deputy defence minister, Matan Vilnai, talked about the Palestinians experiencing ‘a bigger shoah’ (holocaust), this reminds us of Governor General Hans Frank in Nazi-occupied Poland, who spoke of ‘death by hunger’.

The real reason for the attack on Gaza is that Israel is only willing to deal with Palestinian quislings. The main crime of Hamas is not terrorism but its refusal to accept becoming a pawn in the hands of the Israeli occupation regime in Palestine.

Yousef Abuddayeh – A Free Palestine Has Never Been Closer!

13 January, 2009

gaza-woman.jpgWhile the depth and breadth of pain of the ongoing Zionist massacre against the Palestinian people is immeasurable, victory for the Palestinian people has never been closer.  Although the past 18 days of pure fascistic Zionist murder spree have to date killed more than 971 Palestinians and have injured over 4,400, the resulting local, national, regional, and international conditions are all pointing towards a political crisis of monumental scale for the tripartite axis.   Composed of the US, the Zionist Israeli polity, and various Arab regimes, this tripartite axis of colonial and neo-colonial conquest is now facing a dead-end spanning geopolitics, demographics, and economy.

Kawther Salam – Warning: Israel Plans to Strike Gaza Hospitals

14 January, 2009

gaza-dead-baby.jpgMurdered by Israel

Israeli MP and leader Avigdor Liberman stated that “Gaza has to be erased from the map by nuclear bombs, like what Americans used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” And the war criminal foreign minister Tzipi Livni said that Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza “is serving the interest of the Palestinian Authority as well as that of Israel”. Liebermann is a cousin of a member of the US Senate who has the same name. Livni is the offspring of a family of terrorists, murderers and thieves who emigrated from Poland.

How Israel’s Propaganda Machine Works by James Zogby (Middle East Online)

Because it recognizes the importance of the propaganda war, Israel fights on this front as vigorously and disproportionately as it engages on the battlefield.

As in past Mideast conflicts, both the media story line and political commentary here in the US has closely followed Israel’s talking points on the war. This has been an essential component in Israel’s early success and in its ability to prolong fighting without US pushback. Because it recognizes the importance of the propaganda war, Israel fights on this front as vigorously and disproportionately as it engages on the battlefield.

Here’s how they have done it:

Harry Feldman: Have your cake

By this time, I think it’s safe to assume that it’s common knowledge that what shattered the ceasefire Egypt brokered in June was not Qassams raining on Sderot, but Israel’s 4 November attack on Gaza, which killed six.  Just coincidentally, that was the day of the historic US presidential election.  As Jim Lobe and Ali Gharib reported on IPS 7 January

“While the major U.S. news wire Associated Press (AP) reported that the attack, in which six members of Hamas’s military wing were killed by Israeli ground forces, threatened the ceasefire, its report was carried by only a handful of small newspapers around the country.

“The Nov 4 raid — and the escalation that followed — also went unreported by the major U.S. network and cable television new programmes, according to a search of the Nexis database for all English-language news coverage between Nov. 4 and 7.”

Vittorio Arrigoni in Gaza: A message from the sky

[Here my last article published Yestarday in  the newspaper Il Manifesto]

Some Palestinian families have handed some leaflets over to us, which had fallen down from the sky in the last few days, courtesy of the Israeli Air Force instead of the customary bombs. Leaflet n. 1, translated from Arabic, said:

“To all the people living in this area. Due to the terrorist acts that the terrorists in your area attacking Israel, the Israeli Defense Forces were forced to take immediate action in your area. We thus urge you, for your own safety, to immediately evacuate the area. Israeli Defense Forces”.
