Venezuela’s Chavez condemns death of Gadhafi’s son

CARACAS, Venezuela: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is condemning the killing of one of Moammar Gadhafi’s sons and three of his grandchildren in a NATO airstrike in Libya.

Chavez asked how some European leaders such as those of Spain, France and Italy can continue to support the airstrikes in Libya.

Chavez…along with other Latin American allies such as Cuba and Bolivia, has advocated negotiations to settle the conflict in Libya.

Chavez criticized the United States and NATO for the airstrikes, calling the military intervention “madness.” He said in a televised speech Saturday night that he believes “the order they’ve given is to kill Gadhafi.”

Kevin Rudd defends NATO Libya mission

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has defended NATO’s mission in Libya after reports an air strike killed several members of leader Muammar Gaddafi’s family.

The Libyan leader’s second-youngest son and three of his grandchildren reportedly were killed in a NATO air strike on the weekend.

Mr Rudd said he could not confirm the report, but defended NATO air raids on the African nation, saying targets had been consistent with the United Nations’ security mandate.

“It’s important that NATO is able to target the command and control structures of the Libyan regime’s armed forces,” the foreign minister told ABC TV from Washington.

Mr Rudd will attend the Libya Contact Group meeting in Rome on Thursday for talks on ongoing implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions.

The contact group, which comprises western countries, Turkey, Arab states, the United Nations, the Arab League and NATO, was set up in London in late March.

British foreign secretary to visit Egypt

LONDON: British Foreign Secretary William Hague will arrive in Egypt on Sunday evening for talks with Egyptian officials, activists and business leaders on supporting Egypt during its transition to a democratic and stable state, the Foreign Ministry announced.

Hague will meet Field Marshall Mohammed Tantawi, the head of the Supreme Council for Armed Forces, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil El Arabi and youth activists.

He will also meet with business leaders and discuss the latest developments in the region with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.

Speaking ahead of his visit, the foreign secretary said: “I look forward to visiting Egypt and meeting with key officials, activists and business leaders as Egypt rightly moves towards a democratic, civilian-led government and an open, democratic society.”

“As a result of the extraordinary events of the recent months and the courage and determination of the Egyptian people, Egypt today stands ready to achieve the transition to a democratic government that meets the aspirations and commands the respect of all Egyptians,” Hague said.

He said: “We welcome the actions being taken by the authorities to move towards this including the reorganization of the State Security organization but there is still more to be done.”

It is even more important that the Egyptian people are able to overcome the political and economic challenges they now face. That is why in addition to generous support from the EU, Britain will continue to offer assistance through our Arab Partnership, he added.

“I also look forward to wide-ranging discussion on a range of regional issues including the situation in Libya and Syria, and the latest developments on the Middle East Peace Process,” Hague said.
