An interview with Qadura Fares, Bitterlemons6/27/2011
bitterlemons: Can you please describe the state of Palestinian prisoners today?
Fares: Right now, there are 5,500 prisoners distributed throughout 22 prisons and detention centers. Most of these prisons are located in Israel. One hundred and forty prisoners have been in jail more than 20 years. Forty prisoners have been in jail more than 25 years. Four have spent more than 30 years in jail.
About 700 prisoners are ill with various types of sicknesses, among them cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes, or were injured when they were outside and are now paralyzed or have some other type of handicap. There are 36 women in prison and about 300 children between the ages of 10 and 17.
Their conditions are very difficult, as, for example, no rights bodies are allowed to visit them in prison. Two months ago alone, a delegation from the Israeli lawyers union was allowed to carry out some visits and they reported that the living conditions were inhuman. This is an Israel organization [that said this].
Also, Israel uses torture in its interrogations. According to one study, as much as 95 percent of prisoners have been exposed to torture of one type or another. Numerous times, military units have entered the prison cell blocks and used tear gas, even though the gas canisters are marked with a warning that they should not be used in an enclosed area. Still Israel uses them against prisoners in their cells. At any time, special forces might enter the prison and use beatings [against the prisoners] in a surprise search.more.. e-mail

Fighting ‘hate speech’ smears on Sheikh Salah
Robert Lambert, Al Jazeera6/30/2011
Palestinian activist Sheikh Raed Salah was barred from the UK due to unfair allegations from neo-conservatives.
Writing in the Guardian newspaper Hanan Zoabi, a member of the Knesset, where she represents the Balad Party, asks how Sheikh Raed Salah’s “struggle for equality” has become a “form of racism?” She is no doubt perplexed to find a fellow defender of the Palestinian liberation struggle defined as a ‘hate-preacher’ by the British Government. “Since when” she pleads, “have states that boast of their democratic credentials acquired the right to arrest people for their political views?”
To answer Zoabi’s questions and to explain the extraordinary decisions to ban, arrest and deport the Palestinian leader Sheikh Raed Salah from Britain it is necessary to understand the long standing role of influential pro-Israel, neo-conservative lobby groups in Westminster and Washington.
The best place to start is 9/11. As we approach the tenth anniversary of al-Qaeda’s terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon it has become fashionable to suggest that the worst excesses of the war on terror are behind us. In truth, the pro-Israel, neo-conservative architects of the war on terror in Washington will be celebrating their ongoing success in falsely conflating a war against Palestinian resistance with what might otherwise have been a legitimate counter-terrorism strategy against al-Qaeda terrorists.
A key ingredient in this success has been to adopt the powerful and pejorative term ‘hate-preacher’ to describe leaders of Palestinian resistance against Israeli oppression and to put them in the same category as al-Qaeda terrorists. — See also: Haneen Zoabi: An Israeli trap for Britain more.. e-mail

The Palestinian third way
Daoud Kuttab, Ma’an News Agency6/30/2011
The Palestinian leadership is more committed than ever to obtaining statehood through the United Nations General Assembly. But despite this commitment, there is a worry that success in New York might not necessarily mean success in Nablus or Hebron.
There are many reasons the UN route is the correct strategy for Palestinians today. Under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority has convincingly addressed Israel’s security concerns. Israeli and US military officials are on the record as praising the success of the Palestinian security in dealing with anti-Israel violence.
The Abbas security doctrine also extends to the issue of incitement. Palestine TV witnessed major changes that saw its audience increase and the Israeli complaints about its content disappear. Emotional video clips praising martyrdom were replaced by public service announcements shot in Gaza reflecting the importance of the family.
The Palestinian ministry of education has become so successful and focused on its mission that USAID is willing to publicly praise and financially support it.
At the day-to-day administrative level, the technocratic government’s head, a vibrant former World Bank official, Salam Fayyad, has become a model prime minister in the entire region.
Yet despite all this positive effort, Palestinian leaders have been unable to move the negotiating process. Despite the fact that the Abbas leadership has successfully addressed all legitimate Israeli concerns, the peace process has not moved at all. more.. e-mail

waves of boats sailing to Gaza
In Gaza: 30 Jun 2011 – Three years ago when we sailed, Free Gaza was largely unknown. The original committee of volunteers worked hard for a couple of years before actually even sailing, then were the first to brave isolated waters, no functional live streaming (blocked), and comparatively little media interest. Amazingly, in retrospect, they made it, then the boat I was on made it, thanks to Free Gaza’s samoud (steadfastness). Those organizers and original activist also endured threats from Zionist agents, direct threats with calls to they and their family, as well as boat sabotage attempts. The same Zionist games, sabotages, political maneuverings and threats are being fired at the current Flotilla. The activists on board –the large majority over 40, over 50, a good number Jewish, all trained in non-violence –are being dubbed “violent”, “terrorists” and as some sort of mortal threat to the heavily armed, highly trained Israeli commandos who will be lurking…more

Obama’s Winning Formula for Syria
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Jun 2011 – By Ali Younes Ever since the beginning of the crises in Syria that started last March in the southern city of Deraa President Bashaar Al Assad seemed not to be able to grasp the enormity of the events that are taking place in his country. From the very beginning, Al Assad and his inner circle decided to use maximum amount of force to crush the protesters in Deraa in its infancy and in order to cow the rest of the citizens into submission. To his surprise, using brute force and killing innocent people seemed to be working the other way around. Indeed protests spread to other cities and Al Assad along with his brother and other Baath party leaders are now facing international scrutiny. While international pressure of condemnations and sanctions are mounting, it is clear that Al Assad is getting knee-deep in Syria’s quicksand that the more he tries…more

Strangers at Checkpoint: Wondering How You Are Doing
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Jun 2011 – By Mats Svensson It is early evening in Ram, a neighborhood in the outskirts of Jerusalem. The workers are on their way home to their families. The queue is long. I am sitting in my Audi, in the diplomats’ queue. I am alone, there’s no queue, but I’m waiting. She stands twenty meters in front of me. Military clothing, with an AK4 over her shoulder. I watch her. Her movements, her face, her youth. A year or so older than my youngest daughter. I see her but she does not see me. She does not see the workers. She only sees her colleague, a boy in the same age as her. The boy is dressed in military clothes and an AK4 hanging nonchalantly over his shoulder. A boy and a girl by a gate. But nobody gives them a coin for their troubles. No beautiful words, no looks of praise….more
