This week on CounterSpin: No one should be surprised that the Trump White House declared the recent commando raid in Yemen that killed at least 23 civilians, including children, “a successful operation.” Some media accounts are describing the first raid on Trump’s watch as “botched,” but that’s not the same as questioning it, much less putting it in a broader context of what’s happening in Yemen and what the US is doing there. Gideon Mendel has created a powerful installation using objects he gathered during visits to the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais.

By focusing on items such as toothbrushes, playing cards, worn-out trainers, teargas canisters, and children’s dolls, Mendel conjures alternative portraits of the ‘Jungle’ residents that also stand in for the plight of displaced people everywhere. 

Gideon’s book of photographs and writings by people who lived in the camp, Dzhangal, is out on January 28, and the exhibition runs at Autograph ABP in Shoreditch until February 11, 2016.
