Einar Tangen: Economic Tsunami Is Now Unavoidable

    hursday, 7 August 2025 — Glenn Diesen

Einar Tangen is a Senior Fellow at Teihe Institute and a Senior Fellow at CIGI. Over the past decade, the US has increasingly been pushing adversaries such as Russia and Iran into China’s arms. While Trump promised to reverse this mistake, he is now doubling down by also pushing friendly states such as India into the Eurasian group. Each threat against BRICS countries increases the incentive to reduce dependence on the US economy.

GM Watch Daily Digest 7 August 2025

    Thursday, 7 August 2025 — GM Watch

GM microorganisms pose huge challenges for risk assessment and governance

A recent review by researchers from Environment Agency-Austria, Austrian Academy of Sciences and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation identifies critical biosafety and wider governance risks of environmental applications of genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs), including those developed by genome editing. It focuses on two case studies of commercialised applications: 1) GM microalgae for biofuel production and 2) GM soil bacteria for increased nitrogen fixation. GMMs are “fundamentally different to GM higher organisms”, raising specific challenges. Their microscopic size complicates detection of their environmental presence, hindering assessment and monitoring of their survival following intended or accidental release. Bacteria and microalgae also readily exchange DNA via horizontal gene transfer, raising the risk of spread of both intended and unintended engineered sequences and traits. Moreover, bacteria are capable of rapid genetic change, with the potential for evolutionary adaptation, providing “new opportunities to evolve, adapt, and spread”. Third World Network via GMWatch

Another Summer of far-right discontent – Time to take stock

Thursday, 7 August 2025 — Institute of Race Relations

We tend to think of all the great social movements in history as driven by progressive values – anti-racist and for civil rights, for instance. But what do we do when a vociferous, regressive, racist social movement emerges, one that threatens to destroy every gain that we have fought for over decades? On 2 August, an estimated 1,500 people attended a Britain First ‘march for remigration’ in Manchester. In addition, over the last fortnight, as recorded in our regular Calendar of Racism & Resistance, anti-refugee protests have taken place in Essex, Surrey, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Portsmouth, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. A racist social movement calling for the deportation of every single asylum seeker in the country is emerging as one of the dominant collective political action movements of our times.

    Thursday, 7 August 2025 — The Tricontinental

Screenshot from Larry Achiampong and David Blandy (UK), Finding Fanon (2018).

    Dear friends,

Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

In July, a few days after the centenary of Frantz Fanon’s birth, I had lunch with his daughter, Mireille Fanon Mendès-France. When I commented that Fanon had died so young, at thirty-nine, Mireille corrected me: ‘No, thirty-six’. Even three more years would have been a gift – to him because he might have been able to finish other work and spend more time with his family, and to us because we might have gotten the book that would have come after The Wretched of the Earth – perhaps one on how to construct a national project that would not succumb to the pitfalls of narrow nationalism. But that was not to be.

What follows is a revised and updated version of an essay from my 2020 book, Seeking Truth in a Country of Lies.

“The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid ‘dens of crime’ that Dickens loved to paint…But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice.”

As The US Sees It Anyway

    Roger Boyd

The wheels of geopolitics keep turning, and the aims of the US policies have become very evident with respect to these three countries:

    • Brazil: Reinstate US dominance and Brazilian vassalage in America’s “backyard”
    • India: Undermine Russia by cutting off its oil sales, while forcing India to reduce its linkages with BRINKCISTAN (Belarus, Russia, Iran, North Korea, China, Iraq, and the “Stans”)
    • Azerbaijan (and Armenia): With Georgia lost, use Azerbaijan (and Armenia) as a pivot point to cause trouble in the Caucasus and as a base for US forces to infiltrate Russia and Iran

As scholars dedicated to questions of justice and ethics we believe that Yvette Cooper’s recent proscription of Palestine Action represents an attack both on the entire pro-Palestine movement and on fundamental freedoms of expression, association, assembly, and protest. We deplore the repressive consequences that this ban has already had, and are especially concerned about the likely impact of Cooper’s ban on universities across the UK and beyond.

France’s national medical association takes stand against pesticides amidst outcry over new law

A petition signed by over two million people has reignited the debate in France over the so-called “Duplomb law”, which was passed by the lower house of the French parliament on 8 July. The record-breaking petition labels the new law a “scientific, ethical, environmental and health aberration”. The reason? Among other things, it facilitates the conditional reintroduction of acetamiprid, despite many scientists considering this neonicotinoid insecticide to be not just toxic to biodiversity but harmful to human health. France led the way in banning it in 2018. The new law – named after the right-wing lawmaker Laurent Duplomb, who proposed it – triggered a wave of concern from when it was first mooted, with some 1,200 French doctors and scientists warning the French government in an open letter about the dangers it represented to public health. Also, France’s National Council of the Order of Physicians (CNOM) has issued its own hard-hitting statement on pesticides. The CNOM asserts that “from a medical point of view”, there is no doubt that pesticides are “substances that could expose the population to major risks” and that “these warnings cannot be ignored”. It also deplores “the persistent gap between available scientific knowledge and regulatory decisions”. GMWatch

    Activist FAQ: Palestine Action Ban

    Monday, 4 August 2025 — NetPol

Palestine Action have been granted permission to seek a Judicial Review to challenge the Government’s decision to ban them. But while legal action proceeds, the ban is still in place.

We’ve collected together answers to some of the common questions we’ve been asked after the ban on Palestine Action into a newly expanded guide to the proscription.

With police around the UK misuing counter terrorism powers, there is widespread confusion about what is lawful. We’ve collected answers to some of your most common questions, including:

    • How can I support people facing trial for previous Palestine Action protests, so they don’t face the legal system alone?
    • Is it lawful for the police to challenge people for having ‘Free Palestine’ flags and banners?
    • What are the penalties for breaking the ban, and what does the law say about criticising the ban on Palestine Action?

As well as this expanded FAQ from Netpol, which builds on the guide we released at the beginning of July, CAGE International have released some excellent resources on the proscription.

    Palestine Action Ban: Netpol’s FAQ
