A Finnish Haven for Terrorists

03.05.2013 | 08:34 | Vladislav GULEVICH

The extremist Internet site «Kavkaz-Center», which is once again being talked about in connection with the terrorist attacks in Boston, used to operate out of Sweden and at one time was located in Estonia and Lithuania, but has seriously become a mouthpiece for Chechen terrorists since moving to Finland. Here it has been taken under the wing of Mikael Storsjö, whose activities are regarded quite favourably by the Finnish authorities. Operating out of Finland, «Kavkaz-Center» successfully acts as an «information window» to the outside world for the «Caucasus Emirate» – an organisation classified as terrorist in Russia. Characteristically, the US authorities have also included the Caucasus Emirate on its list of terrorist organisations, but are doing nothing to neutralise it…

Terror Acts in US: Who Gains? (I)

03.05.2013 | 00:00 | Olga SHEDROVA

…The Boston tragedy is not the only terrorist act on US soil taking place in a short period of time. The explosions in Texas and Atlanta, the ricin-laced letters sent to President Obama and Senators Roger Wicker and Carl Levin, all these actions are instigating panic in the country. But it strikes an eye that in other cases the perpetrators are not given so much attention to, if any. Perhaps it’s not so easy to create an enemy image that would be convincing enough to be imposed on the world. And a lot of things are really peculiar here…

Germany’s Political Parties Prior to the Bundestag Elections

02.05.2013 | 00:00 | Natalia MEDEN

The biggest sensation in the spring polls has been caused by the popularity of the new «Alternative for Germany» party. Polls conducted in connection with the Alternative for Germany party’s founding congress showed its support ranged from 17 to 26 percent, almost the same as the Social Democrats. It is by no means a given that the young party will receive that many votes in the election, yet the very creation of Alternative for Germany, which is calling for the dissolution of the eurozone, has made the European establishment seriously uneasy… Several months before the September elections, the positions of the SPD and the CDU/CSU in the Bundestag agree on virtually every important foreign policy issue. The stability and predictability of its foreign policy is a long-established principle in Germany. Germany’s partners, including Russia, can only welcome this principle, which will hold no matter which party comes into power.

Post-Chavez Latin America: An Alliance Between Local Capital and Socialism?

02.05.2013 | 00:00 | Mahdi Darius NAZEMROAYA

Many questions have arisen about what direction Latin America and the so-called “pink tide” will take since Hugo Chavez’s death and his successor Nicolas Maduro’s victory in the Venezuelan presidential elections against Henrique Capriles Radonski on April 14, 2013. These questions broadly focus on the rest of Latin America and the region’s leftist governments and movements. Several important questions are being asked. Will the US gain ground or lose even more influence in Latin America? Will Latin America continue to move leftwards or will the status quo ante prevail?..

EU: «Deposits Trimming» and Geopolitical Model

01.05.2013 | 00:00 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV

The European Union has launched a legal procedure to create a foundation for actions aimed at «cutting extra weight» from large deposits in the banks of the Union’s members… For the first time in the Eurozone history the investors are divided into the «reliable» and «risky» groups, and the last ones will have to face confiscations. The cutting away from deposits will be applied only to the troubled banks. As the experience of Greece, Cyprus, and even Spain and Italy shows, no banks are protected from trouble…

German Lies About War, Russians and Poles

01.05.2013 | 00:00 | Vladislav GULEVICH

The German movie, much talked about recently, is called «Our Mothers, Our Fathers» («Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter»). It is a symbol of Germany walking over a psychological milestone. Now the Germans think that, no matter what, the Wehrmacht soldiers were good guys. Even if they killed, it was done on order. At that, the Russian servicemen are painted exactly as Goebbels described them, barbarian and subhuman. It’s not all. «Our Mothers, Our Fathers» is not anti-Russian only, it is also defiantly anti-Polish…

Boston Echoes in Finland

30.04.2013 | 00:00 | Dmitry NEFEDOV

What happened in Boston is still rather opaque, but new facts are being revealed… Somehow, the fact of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s alleged involvement in a secret operation launched by the Central Intelligence Agency is undeservedly left out of focus… The terrorist information network has branches in Western Europe, including Finland. There is information testifying to the fact that Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received instructions from the Kavkaz Center listed by the United Nations Security Council as a mouthpiece of “Emarat Kavkaz”, a terrorist organization led by Doku Umarov…

Washington’s «Civil Society» and CIA Financing of Chechen and Other Caucasus Regional Terrorists

29.04.2013 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

Through a myriad of «civil society» organizations, the United States has been financing Chechen groups inside the autonomous republic, in Russia, and abroad… A November 12, 2009 Confidential cable from the U.S. embassy in Moscow implies that the Carnegie Center NGO in Moscow be engaged to stymie Russia’s political and economic goals in the North Caucasus… Other leaked Confidential cables provide in-depth details on U.S., British, and Norwegian support for exiled «Chechen-Ichkeria» leader Akhmed Zakayev… Zakayev has also received significant support from the governments of Denmark, Finland, and the Czech Republic, where there are active Chechen exile community. The Kavkaz Center, which runs a pro-Caucasus Emirate website and provides an important public relations service for Emirate leader Doku Umarov’s terrorist cells in southern Russia…

Boston Tragedy: Time for Reckoning

29.04.2013 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV

On April 19 the Finnish Anti-Fascist Committee reported that the Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev subscribed to Kavkaz Center terrorist site. The publication offers robust evidence to prove the fact. It points out that it is however «impossible to guess if the brothers received instructions from Doku Umarov’s Emerat Kavkaz directly or were merely «lone wolf» attackers inspired by terrorists propaganda»… In 2011 the UN Security Council listed Doku Umarov as a terrorist. The organization he heads, the Emarat Kavkaz, was listed as a terrorist organization, associated with Al-Qaeda. The Kavkaz Center is its mouthpiece, described by Umarov himself as «the official information organ of the Emarat Kavkaz». In Finland the «Center» enjoys quite a comfortable standing being located in downtown Helsinki…
