Celebrating International Women’s Day with the Women of Gaza
Ann Wright, CounterPunch 3/10/2014
In Cairo
Five years ago in March, 2009, only two months after the 22 day Israeli attack on Gaza, I was on an international delegation of sixty women organized by CODEPINK who traveled to Gaza for International Women s Day. In the week in Gaza, we met with women where their homes used to be before they were destroyed by the Israeli attack that killed 1450, wounded 5,000 and left 50,000 homeless. We also met with women in 13 community centers throughout the country, to listen to their stories of life under attack and under siege.
Five years later, I joined an international delegation of 100 women from 7 countries to travel to Gaza in solidarity with the women of Gaza for International Women s Day. Women of Gaza are over 50 percent of the 1.7 million people who live in tiny Gaza. As they care for their families, they face extreme circumstances with daily attacks from the Israeli military, lack of electricity and water, environmental disasters of sewage flooding into the streets, and a lack of basic necessities.
Hundreds of tunnels under the border with Egypt that previously brought food and supplies denied by the Israelis in their land blockade of Gaza, have been destroyed by the Government of Egypt, reportedly to prevent weapons smuggling by militant groups. Travel in and out of Gaza through the Egyptian border for medical treatment, education and family visits to relatives around the world has become even more difficult have in the past. The Egyptian border with Gaza now has been closed for 28 consecutive days and was only opened once in February for a number of pilgrims to Mecca to return.
Palestinians who have never been charged with a crime, never seen the inside of a court are now treated as convicted prisoners in the open air prison called Gaza the walls on all sides of the prison, the Israeli land and sea blockades on three sides and the Egyptian blockade on one side, are closing tighter and tighter. more..e-mail

Debunking some myths about Israel’s water politics
Miriam R Lowi, Al Jazeera 3/10/2014
Ending the occupation is a crucial first step if Israel wants real peace with its neighbours.
n his speech to Israel’s Parliament on February 12, Martin Schultz, president of the European Parliament, spoke of our shared responsibility to stand up for freedom and dignity at all times. He acknowledged Israel’s success at realising a dream shared by many people: To live “in freedom and dignity” in “a homeland of their own”, noting that Palestinians also have the right to “self-determination and justice”.
He then addressed Palestinian suffering and in doing so, highlighted the glaring discrepancy in access to water between the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza on the one hand, and Israelis – inside the “Green Line” and on settlements in the West Bank – on the other.
AIPAC did not remain silent. In a New York Times article AIPAC’s Seth Siegel suggests that the Arabs should stop viewing Israel as “the problem”. Without any mention of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, he calls upon Arabs to reach out to Israel and benefit from its superior know-how.
Israel could save them from water scarcity and reconciliation could ensue. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke likewise in his address to AIPAC on March 4: The Arabs need to recognise Israel as a Jewish state; then there would be peace and the deserts would bloom.

Palestinian women demand their rights
Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 3/9/2014
Slides – MEMO Photographer: Rich Wiles
Events to mark ‘International Women’s Day’ began in earnest in Palestine on March 6th as women from various movements and organisations staged a small demonstration outside the entrance to Yasser Arafat’s tomb at al-Muqata’ in Ramallah. The event which was called for by a coalition of women’s groups in the city demanded full equality for women under law and in practice in Palestine. Palestine Authority police and plain clothes security officers requested that the protesters move away from the presidential compound and in to the city centre but the demonstrators refused to be moved as they exercised their rights to protest which s
hould be the norm in any society.

On March 8th – the day celebrated as ‘International Women’s Day’ globally – a much larger protest gathered at the entrance to Qalandia refugee camp on the outskirts of Ramallah and made its way towards Jerusalem. Organisers said the protest would attempt to pass the checkpoint and reach Jerusalem although upon reaching Qalandia checkpoint and the Apartheid Wall it was met with a violent response from the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) who fired large amounts of tear gas and percussion grenades at the non-violent march. Palestinian flags were hung on the fences of the checkpoint and some Palestinian youth as well as women responded to the tear gas by throwing stones at the IOF.
For women in Palestine these two events are only the start of many being held across Palestine in the coming days. The demand for full gender equality and women’s rights within Palestinian society and the collective demands of all Palestinian people for liberation will be highlighted jointly during these events. Israel and the Conservative Movement in America
Justin Raimondo, Antiwar.com 3/10/2014
A brief history
Editorial note: The following is the text of a talk given at the National Summit to Reassess the US-Israel “Special Relationship” held in Washington, D.C., on March 7.

As is the case in so many other ways, the conservative movement s position on the state of Israel isn t what it used to be. Just as what we call the Old Right, the pre-[William F.] Buckley right was anti-interventionist and good on civil liberties, so the conservatives of the 1940s and 1950s were hostile to Israel. A good example of this is a letter from the neoconservative guru Leo Strauss to the editors of National Review: he was objecting to an article in the November 17, 1956 issue of the magazine that contained the following sentence:
“Even the Jews, themselves the victims of the most notorious racial discrimination of modern times, did not hesitate to create the first racist state in modern history.”
It is unimaginable that such a sentence would ever find its way into the National Review of Rich Lowry, because he represents a movement that has been thoroughly co-opted and corrupted by, first, the cold war, and secondly our endless “war on terrorism.”
The conservative movement of the 1940s and 50s openly challenged the entire conception of the Jewish state: this argument was made in several books published by the pioneering conservative book publisher, Henry Regnery, who issued a whole series of books reporting on the dispossession of the Palestinian people and calling into question the whole Zionist project. Nejla Izzeddin s The Arab World (1953), is noted by the Kirkus Service as follows…. more..e-mail
