Crimea: Right for Self-Determination or Memory Losses Striking Germans
15.03.2014 | 00:00 | Natalia MEDEN
Germans appear to suffer from lapses of memory. The politicians have forgotten the way their country was united. They were adamant and ready to go to any length to achieve this goal making cede the resistant France and Great Britain… Any predicaments on the way were overcome those days under the slogan Wir sind das Volk – We are one People! Russia supported the aspiration to unity. Now why Berlin refuses the right of Russians living in Crimea to join the Russians living across the Kerch Strait? The German Chancellor joins the choir of other Western leaders saying that what is happening in Crimea is annexation. Why?
Crimea Self-Determination amid Western Law of the Jungle
15.03.2014 | 00:00 | Finian CUNNINGHAM
Ahead of the referendum in Crimea this weekend on whether the Ukrainian autonomous republic should secede and join the Russian Federation, Washington and Europe are piling on the pressure to scupper the poll with unprecedented threats of reprisals. German chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated provocative American claims that Russia is using «19th and 20th century tactics» and «law of the jungle» (meaning military aggression), when the reality is the reverse: it is Western states that are railroading political aims with wild threats of war…
Referendum in Crimea and International Law
14.03.2014 | 09:53 | Alexander MEZYAEV
On March 16 Crimea is to hold a referendum to define its fate. The decision has evoked an extremely nervous reaction in the West. US President Barack Obama said it violated international law but never adduced any legal arguments to support the statement. The same applies to other statements on this account, they all lack legal substantiations… The lack of clear-cut definitions and weighty legal arguments is egregious. It proves that they understand well the referendum in Crimea does not violate any whatsoever international legal norms. To the contrary, it’s an example of compliance with international law by the people of Crimea…
US Pushes Georgia into NATO: MAP is Option Again
14.03.2014 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV
…On his recent visit to Washington on February 25 Georgian Prime Minister Garibashvili got the assurances that his country will get a MAP at NATO September 2014 session in Cardiff, Wales, in case Crimea votes for joining the Russian Federation at the March 16 referendum… Russia still maintains a military presence within the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and regards NATO advancement as an immediate threat. Giving MAP to Georgia means constant confrontation with Russia adamant to stay firm asserting its foreign policy interests and ready to rebuff any attempts to intimidate or exert pressure on it…
Events in Crimea, or Lie Detector Testing Procedure
14.03.2014 | 00:00 | Sergey VENEDOV
Having lived 30 years in prosperous Switzerland and much less prosperous France, it’s really hard to get accustomed to and reconciled with the mixture of cold calculation, hypocrisy, light-mindedness and cynicism that defines the mindset of people who live in the West. What strikes one’s mind is the readiness of the so-called free and democratic countries to obey the orders given from overseas by the «global power» which claims the right to rule the world but in reality behaves like a haughty and high-handed empire built on lies…
Ukraine: Empire Stretching from San to Don
13.03.2014 | 20:42 | Vladislav GULEVICH
…The West needs Ukraine as a large constantly smouldering hotbed in the vicinity of Russian borders. Even ready for escalation, it weighs risks before crossing the line. Some say they can put up with Ukraine without Crimea. Converting the country into the springboard for brainwashing the neighboring Russian regions would do. But with Crimea or without it, will such a large country as Ukraine follow the fascist-minded «nationalist revolutionaries»? Will the citizens, Russians or not, accept their fate of becoming a springboard for expansion of Euro-Atlantic forces deeper into Eurasia? Will they accept the future the Nationalist junta plans for Ukraine?
Obama and Kerry Ignore U.S. Law on Aiding Ukraine Coup Leaders
13.03.2014 | 09:49 | Wayne MADSEN
Russia’s Foreign Ministry and ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych have correctly pointed out that the decision by the Obama administration to provide U.S. economic assistance to Ukraine’s coup leaders is a direct violation of U.S. laws designed to ensure that juntas, which overthrow democratically-elected governments, are not rewarded with U.S. taxpayers’ money in the form of grants, loan guarantees, and other economic and/or military assistance. The original Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 forbidding such assistance was signed into law on September 4, 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. However, as with President Barack Obama’s and Secretary of State John Kerry’s decision to provide Ukraine’s coup-installed government with $1 billion in loan guarantees, the Public Law 87-195’s enforcement has been subject to inconsistent application by a number of U.S. administrations, including the present one…
‘Pravy Sektor’ and ‘White Al-Qaeda’ – two sides of the same coin
13.03.2014 | 00:00 | Anna FILIMONOVA
The situation in Ukraine is not changing by the day, but by the hour. The junta that has come to power as a result of the coup d’état organised from the outside is made up of fragmented, loosely-connected parts. Tymoshenko and Turchynov are fading into the background, not to mention Klitschko, while neo-Nazi Dmytro Yarosh, head of the international terrorist group Pravy Sektor («Right Sector»), and his right-hand man Andriy Paruby, who were included in the coup as part of the ‘temporary government’, are moving forward to take leading roles. It has been reported that some of the Pravy Sektor militants received military training in Lebanon and Syria…
Warpath Western States Block Diplomacy over Ukraine
13.03.2014 | 00:00 | Finian CUNNINGHAM
The US and its European allies are moving ever recklessly to a war footing with Russia over the crisis in Ukraine. Military maneuvers, inflammatory rhetoric and the readying of economic sanctions against Russia are creating an ominous momentum for confrontation – one that precludes even a modicum of diplomatic options to try to resolve the escalating tensions. Washington and Brussels are condemning Russia for «aggression» and «violation» of Ukrainian territory without the slightest due consideration for the political background to the crisis…
Information Warfare: New Face of Cold War
12.03.2014 | 00:00 | Natalia MEDEN
Today one could only guess what the recently started, unprecedented in scope, anti-Russian campaign may lead to as mainstream Western media outlets are getting more and more involved in the effort. Russia has taken resolute steps to defend its vital interests in Crimea and Ukraine as the West unleashed a new form of cold war – information warfare…
Brzezinski about Ukraine: Underlying Meaning of Finland Option
11.03.2014 | 00:00 | Sergey MAXIMOV
A coup took place in Kiev of February 22, 2014. The same day the Financial Times published the Russia Needs to be Offered a ‘Finland Option’ for Ukraine article by Zbignew Brzezinski… Mr. Brzezinski has a long history of giving advices to many US administrations. Now he comes up with an offer to lend a helping hand to the new government in Kiev and deter Russia from taking resolute steps to defend its interests of vital importance in Ukraine… The Brzezinski’s idée fixe is the further fragmentation of Eurasia’s political map (along the former Yugoslavia lines) that’s why he virulently opposes any form of integration in the post-Soviet space…
Syria, Ukraine: One Antiterrorist Front
11.03.2014 | 00:00 | Boris DOLGOV
The February armed coup in Ukraine has repeated the Syrian scenario in the Russia’s brotherly nation. It was a result of the actions planned in advance using both «soft» and «tough» power directed from outside… In Kiev the coup was staged by militants trained by the CIA. There were many of them coming from Western Ukraine to join together with mercenaries from Poland and the EU states, Georgia and the Islamists with combat experience received in Syria and Libya. Using snipers hired by the Maidan leaders is also the repetition of Syrian experience…
New Ukraine Government: Questioned Legality or Criminal Nature of Staged Coup
10.03.2014 | 00:54 | Alexander MEZYAEV
…An armed coup is a criminal offense. Those who claim to be the new government of Ukraine have no legality and their actions have no legal ground from the point of view of the Russian Federation… Russia has not breached any international norms. Whatever the West says about the violation of the United Nations Charter and other international documents is based on the wrong foundation because the legal status of the Ukraine’s new government is an open question. The West has taken part in the overthrow of democratically elected government and has recognized those who have been involved in the actions punishable by national criminal code. It means that the West itself is in flagrant violation of international norms…
The Oligarchy’s Complete Triumph in Ukraine. The ‘Heroes of Maidan Square’ Hoisted by their Own Petard
10.03.2014 | 00:00 | Dmitry MININ
It has long been known that revolutions are carried out by romantics, and their fruits harvested by cynics. But Ukraine has now put them all to shame with the unbelievable speed with which it has rushed from romanticism to cynicism. The final few dazed revolutionaries are still wandering across Maidan Square shouting «Down with thieves and oligarchs!» and «Long live the government of national confidence», while at the same time it is these same oligarchs who are confidently taking up the more substantial government posts…
Western Media Go to War over Ukraine
09.03.2014 | 00:41 | Finian CUNNINGHAM
…Why were Western politicians able to parade through Kiev whipping up the extremists among the protesters without even a question from the Western media? Why were cadres of overtly neo-Nazis portrayed as legitimate protesters even though they were attacking Ukrainian government buildings and police with firearms and firebombs? Why has the Western media banned the use of the words «neo-Nazi» and «fascist» as accurate descriptions of the cadres that have a brought the new regime in Kiev to power? Why does the Western media not describe members of the junta – comprised of self-declared neo-Nazi Svoboda and Pravy Sektor parties – as «neo-Nazis»?..
Western Tight Noose around Ukraine’s Economy Neck
09.03.2014 | 00:31 | Olga SHEDROVA
Economy in doldrums, the Kiev junta is urgently reviving cooperation with the International Monetary Fund. On March 4 a team from the IMF was in Kiev to study the books and consider a loan. Kiev hopes to get the first $3 billion in a month. Yatsenyuk rushed to assure the West that Ukraine is ready to meet all the conditions put forward by the Fund… The IMF conditions are going to strike agriculture. Western creditors demand to rescind the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land, the value-added tax easing law for those who reside in rural areas and also subsidies for pork and chicken meat producers. Besides, the International Monetary Fund wants Ukraine to privatize all coal mines and completely abrogate state subsidies for them. Transport, as well as housing and communal services benefits are to be revoked…
