Why there is no room for diplomacy in Gaza
Samer Badawi, +972 Magazine7/15/2014
With or without a ceasefire, the brutality of the last week will be revisited upon the Palestinians of Gaza a fact that, unsurprisingly, leaves no room for diplomacy.
It should come as no surprise that Hamas Tuesday de facto rejected what by all accounts was an Israeli diktat disguised as an Egyptian ceasefire proposal to end Israel s relentless assault on the organization and its base of operations, Gaza. Following a week of near-constant Israeli bombing, the brunt of which has been borne by Palestinian civilians, the Egyptian proposal featured none of the demands on which Hamas had been most vocal, chief among them an end (or, at least, a demonstrable easing) of Israel s blockade and the release of Hamas members detained by Israel at the height of its now month-long military campaign in the West Bank. Many of those detained had been swapped for former Hamas hostage Gilad Shalit. But this time around, Hamas could make no such bargain.
Short of bartering the lives of more innocents, what will move Hamas towards a deal? The question is especially urgent now that Egypt s one-sided proposal has failed. As nearly two million Palestinians await an end to their third full-scale bombardment in just over five years, Egypt remains the only country that has successfully served as an intermediary between Hamas and Israel. But the prospects of another Egyptian-brokered ceasefire look dim.
This time, Egypt s proposal came a full week after this latest lopsided exchange of violence began. That s a week too late for the nearly 200 Palestinians who have been killed to date, or the more than 200,000 who have had to flee northern Gaza in the face of an impending Israeli ground invasion. The lag is a sure sign of Egypt s true intentions: it has little interest in sparing the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Hamas even if that comes at the expense of more civilian lives. After all, the Sisi government has sentenced hundreds of accused Brotherhood members to death in summary trials of its own.

Facts All US Citizens Need to Know About Israel and Palestine
Robert Barsocchini, Washington s Blog7/12/2014
Gaza (along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem) is occupied Palestinian territory under international law, determined by the vast majority of the world, as well as the highest court in the world, the UN s International Court of Justice. Gaza cannot commit aggression against Israel, since Israel is in constant and continual commission of illegal aggression against Palestine by occupying it (illegally and sadistically blockading it and frequently committing terrorism against its civilians, including by targeting them with chemical weapons provided by US taxpayers see Rain of Fire by Human Rights Watch). As documented by Amnesty Int l, Human Rights Watch, and many others, Israel intentionally targets and murders civilians, including children, en masse.
Israel also kidnaps and tortures children, including by keeping them in outdoor cages, over night, in winter.
But, even ignoring international law and that Gaza is under illegal Israeli occupation, Gaza did not initiate this current round of violence; Israel did:
Western/US/Israeli propaganda says the violence started with the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli youths on June 12th. That is a lie:
On May 20th, the Israeli government murdered 2 unarmed Palestinian teens, one on video, and wounded a third.
The firing of pathetic scrap metal rockets from impoverished Gaza, which have killed no one, were in fact launched in response to earlier Israeli bombings, killings, assassinations, and arrests of Palestinians, including children.
Since the year 2000, Israel has killed 1,500 Palestinian children, while Palestinians have killed 132 Israeli children. That means Israel has killed over 1,000% percent more Palestinian children than vice versa.more..e-mail

The slaughter in Gaza will not defeat Hamas
Dr Azzam Tamimi, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)7/14/2014
At 9pm on Saturday, Palestinians in Hebron and other West Bank towns took to the roofs to watch what Hamas’s military wing promised would be a missile attack on Tel Aviv using a new type of rocket, the J80. J stood for Jabari, the military’s top commander, whose assassination by Israel on 14 November 2012 triggered the previous war. That was a clear sign of defiance by the movement which maintains that, while it did not start the current cycle of conflict, it was determined to defeat the Israeli offensive.
Hamas has always insisted, contrary to claims by Binyamin Netanyahu, that it did not know who kidnapped and killed the three Israeli teenagerswhom the Israeli prime minister used as a pretext for his onslaught on the Gaza Strip. That was not the sort of operation Hamas would have carried out given that its goal was to secure the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Many Palestinians believe Netanyahu had been planning an offensive against Hamas for months before that kidnapping. After deadlocked negotiations with Israel prompted the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, to seek rapprochement with Hamas, the indirect US and EU positive response to the Palestinian reconciliation enraged the Israelis. The offensive on Gaza was Netanyahu’s last trick, having tried to cripple the new unity government and to block payment of salaries to thousands of Gaza employees.
This may yet prove to be another disastrous miscalculation. As early as last winter Israelis were privately talking about messages from the new military authorities in Egypt to the effect that now was the best time to attack Gaza and unseat Hamas. The Cairo regime, which toppled the first democratically elected president in the history of Egypt, had been tightening the siege on Gaza by maintaining the closure of the Rafah crossing with Egypt and destroying the tunnels that kept the people of Gaza going while Israel imposed sanctions and a ground, sea and aerial siege.more..e-mail

The resistance is making history
Abdul Sattar Qassem, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)7/12/2014
The Palestinian issue suffered a decline in the regional media with the onset of the Arab uprisings. Indeed, many believed that the issue had been consigned to the history books and would disappear, submerged by
the chaos affecting Arab countries.
There are those who were very happy to see such a decline because it freed them from their responsibility and offered peace of mind. Others raised the banner of resistance and defiance and have been waiting for the day that they could prove that the Palestinian cause is alive and well, and that the Arab identity of Palestine is protected by strong arms and watchful eyes insistent on keeping Palestine a sacred Arab land.
History is only made by strong and brave individuals who insist on restoring their rights, while the compromisers only bring about shame and ignominy. This is a lesson to the Palestinians and the Arabs who thought that negotiations will save face.
Israel’s arrogance
The Arabs have given in to Israel repeatedly for over twenty years and have begged for its acceptance and satisfaction. However, Israel did not benefit from the submissive Arab initiatives and continued in its arrogance in an attempt to strip the Arabs of everything.
Israel has not hesitated to use its military and political strength to hit every Arab trying to make a change. Ironically, it has never been satisfied fully by those who more or less surrendered, and yet it continues to insist on provoking those who believe in Arab and Palestinian rights. As such, Israel has been unable to take advantage of the traitors to the cause, and couldn’t get rid of those challenging its hegemony in the region.more..e-mail

Credit Lefteris Pitarakis/Associated Press Al Akhbar: Gaza death toll at 192 as truce fails : Israel carried out at least four air strikes against Gaza on Tuesday afternoon, resuming raids after a truce that failed to get off the ground, AFP correspondents and eyewitnesses said, as the Palestinian death toll rose to 192. The raids came shortly after Israel s army announced it was ending a ceasefire it had observed since 9:00 am under the terms of an Egyptian truce proposal. Hamas had effectively rejected the proposal, saying it was not consulted and would not halt fire without a broad deal that included concessions it has sought. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior Israeli official told AFP that the occupation forces had been ordered to act forcefully. Late Monday, the death toll…more

Is Sisi Suited for Role as Israel-Hamas Mediator?
Palestine Chronicle: 15 Jul 2014 – By Ahmed Meiloud Eight days have lapsed since Israel started massive airstrikes on Gaza, with the prospect of an Egypt-brokered cease-fire raised on Tuesday and at time of press appearing uncertain. The densely populated strip has no air defence, no navy and no army to speak of. Like previous onslaughts on the strip, the Israelis have a total air and sea supremacy. Despite that advantage, the Israelis face two primary challenges: firstly, the absence of a well-defined and militarily achievable objective, and secondly, the unwillingness of the Palestinians, particularly Hamas, to surrender. These challenges have always typified how these offensives were carried out and how they ended up days or weeks later with enormous human loss for the defenceless civilians of Gaza and with little success for the Israelis. While the military imbalance is grossly in the Israelis favour, allowing them to decide when and how to start aggressions, a…more

Barbarism Unleashed: Israel’s Attack on Civilized Norms
Palestine Chronicle: 15 Jul 2014 – By Ron Forthofer The following material is excerpted from a column I wrote about Israel s attack on Gaza in June 2006. This column could have also been written about Israel s horrific attacks on Gaza in 2008/2009 and in 2012. As long as Israel can continue to commit war crimes with impunity, Israel has no reason to modify its behavior. Excerpts from column about Israeli s 2006 attack on Gaza The civilian casualty toll and the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza is appalling. When will we ever learn that violence only begets more violence? And, sadly, in modern warfare, innocent civilians are usually the primary victims. Civilized Norms for Self-defense During the current crisis, Israel has portrayed its military attacks as self-defense. Surely, every government has the right indeed, the responsibility to defend its people. However, in civilized society, there must be rules delineating what is legitimate self-defense, as…more

Gaza: Yet another Israeli Miscalculation
Palestine Chronicle: 15 Jul 2014 – By Shafiq Morton The gloves need to come off on the truth of what has been happening in Gaza not only since the launch of Operation Protective Edge last week, but also since Operation Pillar of Defence in 2012 and Operation Cast Lead in 2008. What
is the real purpose of these bare-fisted operations? To call Israeli acts of aggression in Gaza in which Palestinian civilians are by far the worst victims a war is to do a disservice to the meaning of the word. A war is when two armies face each other and fight on the basis of a military equivalence. So if there is no war, what is there? Informed commentators such as the The Independent s Robert Fisk have observed that the story we are deliberately not being told is that the Gaza offensive is about land. Politically, it is about final Zionist hegemony….more

Israel s Dissenting Voices Get Lost in the War Echo Chamber
Palestine Chronicle: 15 Jul 2014 – By Neve Gordon For several days now, some of my neighbours have suggested that the time has come to destroy them – meaning either Hamas or Palestinians once and for all . The rockets being fired from Gaza clearly do have the effect of raising the level of hysteria within Israel. However, not only have the dozens of Grads been fermenting the spirit of war government ministers, members of Knesset and leading media commentators have also been consistently pouring oil onto the fire. Indeed, it seems the only vocal criticism against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is that he is too soft on the Palestinians. There is no public debate about the necessity of another war, but only about how punitive Israel should be. Immediately following the discovery of the three Jewish teenagers bodies on June 30, Israel s security cabinet met. Although it was, by then, common knowledge that the higher…more

No Exit from Gaza: A New War Crime?
Palestine Chronicle: 15 Jul 2014 – By Richard Falk The civilian population of Gaza are trapped in an overcrowded war zone with no form of exit. This situation reveals a serious gap in international humanitarian law As the hideous Israeli assault on Gaza, named Operation Protective Edge, by the IDF enters its second week, overdue international appeals for a ceasefire fall on deaf ears. Bibi Netanyahu tells the world that no outside pressure will alter Israel s resolve to reach its military and political goals to disable Hamas for the indefinite future. The purported justification for such aggression is to make sure this time that Israelis will never again have to seek shelter from Hamas rockets, which could require a prolonged military campaign combining ground forces with a continuing air and naval assault. Leaving aside the debate on causes and justifications, the civilian population of Gaza, estimated to be about 1.7 million with women and children comprising…more

With and Without God On Their Side
Dissident Voice: 15 Jul 2014 – Recently, the US House of Representatives voiced unanimous support for the Israeli onslaught on the people of Gaza. Many opponents of Israel s continued occupation and oppression of the Palestinians pointed, like they always do, to the disproportionate influence the so-called Israeli Lobby has in Congress. While this is an established and verifiable fact, I would argue that the Lobby is just a manifestation of a less obvious but essential reason for the never-ending support Israel receives from Washington and its apologists in the US media. As a resident of the United States one hears repeatedly of an illusion many fellow residents share. That illusion is called American exceptionalism. In short, the essence of this illusion is that the United States is a blessed nation whose actions in war, peace and otherwise are measured differently than those of almost every other nation. This means that the genocide of the indigenous peoples…more

Once Again, Israel Is Defeated
Dissident Voice: 15 Jul 2014 – As the Israeli Cabinet announced earlier today that it accepted the Egyptian cease-fire offer, Palestinian freedom fighters in Gaza continued firing rockets targeting the whole of Israel. The situation is clear. Israel is desperate for a break in the violence. In spite of its endless bravado, and military might, Israel lacks the military capacity and the courage to encounter Palestinian resistance on the ground. The Israeli elite recognizes that the military can t resolve the problem, if anything, its extensive use would diminish Israeli manoeuvrability on the international front. Hamas, on the other hand, has won its biggest military, political and ideological victory to date; it has managed to deliver some elementary messages to all of Israeli society: You are living on our Palestinian stolen land, our Right to Return is elementary and is not negotiable. You Israelis do not belong here, you never did, and you had better consider your…more
