Despite the horrors, we will stay in Gaza
Safaa El Derawi, Ma an News Agency7/16/2014
Safaa El Derawi is the Gaza project assistant for Middle East Children””!s Alliance and an environmental engineer living in Nuseirat Refugee Camp
I tried to write two days ago, but I did not know where I should start.
Do I start talking about the terror and the fear that we feel due to continuous bombardment of houses and agricultural lands across Gaza by Israeli warplanes? Or do I tell you about the bombing by marine boats that make us feel that we are threatened with death at any time?
But I decided to write about Friday night; it was the hardest and the heaviest. Many homes and mosques were bombed randomly. A hospital and association for the disabled were targeted too.
We spent all night in fear and tension without electricity trying to calm the children. No matter how hard we tried, they did not stop crying.
In the area where I live, three houses and a mosque were bombed in a period of 15 minutes. Messages reached many of the people ordering them to leave their homes, and some residents left and others decided to stay.
I called my friend Maha after I heard the news about the bombing of several houses in the Deir al-Balah refugee camp and I could not reach her. My heart was racing. She contacted me after hours to tell me that they left their home.
Their neighbors had received a warning message before their home was bombed. Four floors with four families and they had just three minutes to leave the house. more..e-mail

As talk of a ceasefire raises hopes, Israel s strikes on Gaza continue to raise the death toll and destroy family homes.
Hamda Abdun, age 4 , lies in a bed in Al Shifa Hospital after having been injured in an Israeli air strike, Gaza City, July 14, 2014. Four members of his family were injured.
With international attention focused on the suffering of civilians in Gaza, pressure has mounted on both sides to agree to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, those on the ground continue to suffer the most. Thousands of Gazans fled the northern region of the strip after receiving warnings from the Israeli military of impending attacks. While many have sought shelter in schools, Israeli strikes continue to claim lives throughout the coastal enclave.
At the time of this posting, Israeli attacks from air, land and sea have killed at least 192 Palestinians, including at least 36 children. According to the UN, 80% of the casualties in Gaza have been civilians. Some 1,400 have been injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Several Israelis have been injured as well, some seriously, but no lives have been lost outside of Gaza.
Leading human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the rocket attacks from Gaza for their indiscriminate nature and targeting of civilian areas. However, they and other organizations such as B Tselem have asserted that Israel s attacks on densely populated urban areas, especially its targeting of private homes of members of Hamas and other militant factions, also amounts to the intentional targeting of civilians, which is a war crime.

Gaza’s Heavy Price
Cesar Chelala, CounterPunch7/14/2014
The Futility of Israeli Aggression
The new Israeli attacks against Gaza, which have already resulted in dozens of deaths, will prove, once again, to be counterproductive. Violence against Palestinians will not diminish their rightful demands for freedom from occupation and for a normal, peaceful life.
Why, then, if Gazans want to live in peace do they continue their equally counterproductive rocket attacks on Israel? Let’s have the opinion of Ari Shavit, a noted Israeli writer and political commentator. Writing in Haaretz Shavit says, The rocket attacks on Israel are like an attack of the starving against the well fed. The starving are seemingly weak. They have no chance. They re supposed to be deterred, scared of their neighbors, and refrain from bothering them. But because they re fanatical, they act illogically. Because they re economically desperate and strategically weak, they choose to challenge their complacent neighbors across the border.
Although I generally agree with Shavit, I question his use of the word fanatical when applied to the Palestinians, a word which has a decidedly pejorative connotation. Why is Israelis desire to live and prosper in peace in their own land more valid than those same desires on Gazans? Are Gazans less human than Israelis?
A more balanced, nuanced opinion is that of Gideon Levy, who has been tireless in his efforts to bring justice to the Palestinians. When asked by an acquaintance of mine why was he so determined in his desire to bring an alternative point of view to the Israelis, Levy answered, Because I don t want the Israelis to say that they didn t know.

Israel bars prominent Palestinian artist from traveling to N.Y. exhibit
Noa Yachot, +972 Magazine7/14/2014
Palestinian artist Khaled Jarrar travels regularly to exhibit and discuss his art. This time, the Israeli army simply said no, you can’t go.
Khaled Jarrar, a prominent Palestinian artist based in Ramallah, was supposed to be in New York by now for an exhibit at the New Museum, a Manhattan hotspot for contemporary art.
Except Israel isn’t letting him go. Jarrar arrived at the Allenby border crossing at 3:00 p.m. yesterday. Rather than cross into Jordan, as he has done many times over the last few years, he was told he could not exit due to an intelligence order. After 10 hours spent waiting, he returned home at around 1 a.m. today.
Jarrar, 38, told +972 that dozens of others Palestinians were turned back while he was waiting at the crossing, though many others were let through. He has no idea why he was refused, as he has traveled regularly over the years to exhibit his work, and has never had a problem. He explained:
“After a very long wait and without understanding what was happening, I was informed that there are security reasons that will prevent me from traveling until the 1st of August. For now, that means that I missed my morning flight from Amman to New York, that I will miss the opening of the show at the New Museum, and that I will miss my artist talk with Lamia Joreige and Charif Kiwan, with Natalie Bell, that was
supposed to happen on the 16th of July.
“Yesterday was the longest day of my life and a day of humiliation. I felt real racism on the part of the security at Allenby Bridge. When this one soldier was talking to his superior officer, I understood he called me zevel [“garbage,” in Hebrew -NY]. I shouted at him that I was no zevel and he was impolite to call me that. No one listened to me, like I did not even exist….”more..e-mail

In Gaza: 16 Jul 2014 – painting by Ahmed Muhanna I sit in my calm, safe Canadian home, listening to birds twitter, people mow their lawns, construction, small planes that sound eerily like the deadly drones haunting Gaza. I am safe. My despicable political *representatives* champion the Zionist regime, say it is defending itself as it murders Palestinians in Gaza, mows down teens attempting normality and evidencing the brave samoud (steadfastness) that Palestinians have branded through their endurance of Zionists war crimes and oppression& the teens were playing football on the small stretch of sand between the elite Deira hotel which mainly hosts foreign journos and aid workers with the money to spare most Palestinians cannot [since they are living on the most basic and highly insufficient food aid, which still doesn’t suffice…which they don’t want but have been subjected to through all sorts of nefarious, sadistic Zionist policies… Such as: shooting and shelling on…more
For Anas Qandeel, Who Won’t Be Posting His Grief A Poem
Palestine Chronicle: 16 Jul 2014 – By Pina Piccolo (Dedicated to Anas Qandeel, the boy that was killed in Gaza one hour after posting his fear and frustration in Facebook.) You weren t killed by the Mighty Cliff that crumbled upon your house, Anas Qandeel, one hour after you posted your frustration at lack of sleep, nor was it the Protective Edge with its sharp surgical precision and the policy hadn t been set, yet to send an sms, or tap the roof in warning Gaze, impatient boy, past the Molten Lead past the Society of Spectacle watching and eating pop corn rosy cheeked from its Sderot hill past the grieving orange groves and olive trunks contorted in the shape of a certain languishing of the heart past that snaking Wall emitting that certain dirge refraining in your brain like the dimming buzz of collapsing colonies as you glance a doll s head surfacing amid crumbled concrete blocks her…more
Those Killed Have Names
Palestine Chronicle: 16 Jul 2014 – By Rana Abdulla Overnight the horror of this situation was added to by the news that an Israeli missile has killed 17 members of one family. Every day the rising death toll in Gaza along with the more than 1,300 injured by the continuous Israeli shelling , has left the population terrorized and in fear. The sight of the horrific pictures of severely burned victims along with the inability to escape this savage punishment has created a sense amongst the population of certain death. When you see someone kill a child, you perception of humanity changes! The rest of the world, so busy with its own affairs not always paying attention continues to accept that these bombardments will happen occasionally. After all, Palestinians are just little creatures to be crushed by a giant foot; terrorists who must be annihilated. Those killed are never named, and we only hear the numbers, in…more
The Peace Process Dies again A Poem
Palestine Chronicle: 16 Jul 2014 – By Gary Corseri There is no peace process. There is peace& and the absence of peace The gnawing hunger for it, The desperation of the vanquished. Does the peace dove fly with a shattered wing? The shattered wing is the wing of war. War is a sieve capturing humanity. Blood seeps out of the mouths of the sieve. How does one speak to a four-year-old child Of processes, politics, quid pro quos? No mother dresses the wounds of the child. Her mother s eyes stare in wonder forever. And we wonder: Do laws since time immemorial, All proclamations, all declarations Matter in the eyes of a hurt, dying child? Have men proven their manhood again in her eyes? Fools in high places clamor for war; fools follow, Fearing not following. Platitudes murder For the sake of murdering for fools In high places and fools following. No one dare speak the Truth of…more
Ravaging Gaza: The War Netanyahu Cannot Possibly Win
Dissident Voice: 16 Jul 2014 – When the bodies of three Israeli settlers Aftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar, both 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19 were found on June 30 near Hebron in the southern West Bank, Israel went into a state of mourning and a wave of sympathy flowed in from around the world. The three had disappeared 18 days earlier in circumstances that remain unclear. The entire episode, particularly after its grim ending, seemed to traumatize Israelis into ignoring harsh truths about the settlers and the militarization of their society. Amid a portrayal of the three as hapless youths, although one was a 19-year-old soldier, commentators have failed to provide badly needed context to the events. Few, if any, assigned the blame where it was most deserved on expansionist policies which have sown hatred and bloodshed. Before the discovery of the bodies, the real face of Netanyahu s notoriously right-wing government was well-known….more
