Death Zone in Shajiya
Rina Andolini, International Solidarity Movement7/20/2014
Gaza, Occupied Palestine
There was a ceasefire today for 3 hours so some of us internationals went to the area which I refer to as the Death Zone Shajiya, we went to see if we could help with the masses of injured amongst the rubble.
The Death Zone is unlike any destruction I have seen in my life there is no place left without bombing, shelling or sniper shots. Total devastation.
We reached and there was a beautiful brother who was looking for his family. Doing our job, we made the decision collectively to help find the brothers family amongst the annihilation.
Unfortunately, the danger starts, there is constant bombing very very very close by, drones literally above our heads and sniper shooting. We are ducking and diving, and weaving in and out of the rubble and destruction.
We have so much to worry about 1- to find this brothers family, 2- to not get struck on the head by falling debris from the tops of buildings/houses, 3 to ensure our safety from the Israeli Occupational Forces.
This is not a joke, this is what happened. I was there and I was in the middle of it along with the five other members including the brother who lost his family.
We were pretty much in the line of fire. However, this was not expected as we were under the impression that we had a ceasefire window to go and do our work and come back safely.
There was cover as we were walking but then, there was a clear opening& .and we heard the first shot towards us. It missed us, but it split the group…. — See also:Shujaiyya: a moonscape strewn with bodiesandThousands flee Gaza’s Shujaiyya, casualties lying on streetsmore..e-mail

Letter from Gaza by a Norwegian doctor
Mads Gilbert, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)7/20/2014
Dearest friends,
The last night was extreme. The “ground invasion” of Gaza resulted in scores and carloads with maimed, torn apart, bleeding, shivering, dying – all sorts of injured Palestinians, all ages, all civilians, all innocent.
The heroes in the ambulances and in all of Gaza’s hospitals are working 12-24 hour shifts, grey from fatigue and inhuman workloads (without payment all in Shifa for the last 4 months), they care, triage, try to understand the incomprehensible chaos of bodies, sizes, limbs, walking, not walking, breathing, not breathing, bleeding, not bleeding humans. HUMANS!
Now, once more treated like animals by “the most moral army in the world” (sic!).
My respect for the wounded is endless, in their contained determination in the midst of pain, agony and shock; my admiration for the staff and volunteers is endless, my closeness to the Palestinian “sumud” gives me strength, although in glimpses I just want to scream, hold someone tight, cry, smell the skin and hair of the warm child, covered in blood, protect ourselves in an endless embrace – but we cannot afford that, nor can they.
Ashy grey faces – Oh NO! Not one more load of tens of maimed and bleeding, we still have lakes of blood on the floor in the ER, piles of dripping, blood-soaked bandages to clear out – oh – the cleaners, everywhere, swiftly shovelling the blood and discarded tissues, hair, clothes, cannulas – the leftovers from death – all taken away … to be prepared again, to be repeated all over. More then 100 cases came to Shifa in the last 24 hrs. Enough for a large well trained hospital with everything, but here – almost nothing: no electricity, water, disposables, drugs, OR-tables, instruments, monitors – all rusted and as if taken from museums of yesterday’s hospitals. But they do not complain, these heroes. They get on with it, like warriors, head on, enormously resolute.more..e-mail

Palestinian human rights leader: Cast Lead was a joke compared to this
Michael Sfard and Raji Sourani, +972 Magazine7/20/2014
LISTEN: Israeli human rights lawyer Michael Sfard speak to Raji Sourani, founder and director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, about the ongoing destruction in Shujaiyeh, the use of human shields and the fate of Gaza s civilian population.
Raji Sourani: Hello
Michael Sfard: Raji? This is Michael. Can you speak now?
R: Yes, yes.
M: So, how was last night?
R: Well last night was difficult, the worst in the last two weeks. This is incredible evil. Ambulances weren t able to reach the areas which were under heavy bombardment by tanks and F16s. And F22s were used too last night. And these kinds of bombs that we are not familiar making the houses last in an earthquake. You know, it just shakes for a few seconds.
M: There are no warnings before?
R: No no no. It just on the top of the people, on their heads. It is a war zone, not bombing. You see slain [people]. Six to eight bombed per minute. Not for 10 minutes, or one hour, all the east side of Gaza, Zeiton, Shujaiyeh, eastern Jabaliya, nothern area, eastern Khan Younis, eastern Rafah&
M: Israeli friends reported that the IDF, the Israeli army made notifications that the civilians could go to some areas. Are there any areas that are safe to be?
R: No, there is not safe place in Gaza. You can be in the street, in my office or home and you will be bombed and away from my house, sixty meters a house was bombed by an F16. This can [happen] anywhere…. — See also:Palestinian Center for Human Rightsmore..e-mail

Saying no to the Israeli massacre!
Ofer Neiman, Alternative Information Center7/19/2014
The small minority of Israeli peace and human rights activists cannot reverse the horrible reality from within, and our action has primarily brought about accusations that we are traitors, as well as assaults by thugs on our protests. We need support from the outside.
The following is a letter by an Israeli citizen, published on Friday 18 July by the London Evening Standard:
The Israeli government is committing war crimes in Gaza. The IDF Spokesperson and media sources have reported deliberate attacks against the homes of senior activists in armed Palestinian groups. These houses are not legitimate military targets, and attacking
them is a violation of …international humanitarian law. Israel has shelled and destroyed Gaza’s only rehabilitation hospital. All this comes on top of a chronic, Israeli-made humanitarian crisis, which has turned into a catastrophe in the past few days. An unfolding Israeli ground invasion will make things even worse.
The Palestinian people are facing a conspiracy by the governments of Israel, The US, Egypt and others. Under the Orwellian title of “ceasefire”, cynical players epitomized by Tony Blair, are trying to impose the continuation of the siege and the strangulation of Gaza on the Palestinian people.
The small minority of Israeli peace and human rights activists cannot reverse the horrible reality from within, and our action has primarily brought about accusations that we are traitors, as well as assaults by thugs on our protests. We need support from the outside. Concerned citizens all over the world can do a lot. Western governments should be flooded with calls for an arms embargo on Israel. Complicit companies, institutions and officials should be boycotted. Users of social media can stand up to Israel’s odious propaganda, which often portrays the state as a bastion of enlightenment in the middle of a jungle. Finally, stronger efforts should also be made to arrest senior Israeli officials who are suspected of war crimes and bring them to a (fair) trial abroad.” [END]e-mail

Gaza a new Sabra and Shatilla , the on-going Nakba
In Gaza: 20 Jul 2014 – Latest reports coming out of Gaza are horrific, the slaughter of Palestinians inShuja iya (Sheyjayee). Even more than ever, we have to challenge the narrative that Israelis are the victims. Palestinians have the right and obligation to resist. Resist this slaughter. Resist the siege. Resist the raping and stealing of their land. Resist their dispossession. We ve seen that the UN and like institutions are useless, a band-aid that doesn t cover all the wound and doesn t address the sickness. The UN is not only useless, it is complicit, from the beginning the dividing and stealing of Palestine. We ve seen that the West and corrupt Arab states have never, and will never, support justice for Palestinians. Only regional allies like Syria, Hezbollah and Iran have truly offered support to Palestinians and Palestinian resistance. With this latest massacre and latest war on Gaza, more than ever we need to recognize this support and the…more

On Human Shielding in Gaza: Israeli Army Tried to Justify Striking Civilian Areas
Palestine Chronicle: 20 Jul 2014 – By Neve Gordon and Nicola Perugini All fighting within cities and all bombardments of urban spaces, even the most precise and surgical , is a potential death trap for civilians. Consequently, the permeation of war into cities inevitably transforms their inhabitants into potential human shields. For Palestinians living in Gaza today, simply spending time in their own homes, frequenting a mosque, going to a hospital or to school has become a dangerous enterprise since any one of these architectural edifices can become at any moment a target. One can no longer safely assume that the existence of masses of human bodies even the bodies of children in civilian spaces can serve as defence of the weak against the lethal capacity of the hi-tech states. Where do Gaza terrorists hide their weapons? But since hi-tech states can and do kill hundreds or thousands of civilians, they have to provide moral…more

Mr. Obama, Spend One Night with Us in Shifa Hospital, It would Change History
Palestine Chronicle: 20 Jul 2014 – By Mads Gilbert Dearest friends, The last night was extreme. The ground invasion of Gaza resulted in scores and carloads with maimed, torn apart, bleeding, shivering, dying all sorts of injured Palestinians, all ages, all civilians, all innocent. The heroes in the ambulances and in all of Gaza s hospitals are working 12-24 hrs shifts, grey from fatigue and inhuman workloads (without payment all in Shifa for the last 4 months), they care, triage, try to understand the incomprehensible chaos of bodies, sizes, limbs, walking, not walking, breathing, not breathing, bleeding, not bleeding humans. HUMANS! Now, once more treated like animals by the most moral army in the world (sic!). My respect for the wounded is endless, in their contained determination in the midst of pain, agony and shock; my admiration for the staff and volunteers is endless, my closeness to the Palestinian sumud gives me strength, although in glimpses…more

Suffocating Indoors Under the Rain of Israel s Bombs
Palestine Chronicle: 20 Jul 2014 – By Ayah Bashir Three weeks before this attack, I had the long-awaited chance to spend a week in the occupied West Bank and the 1948 territories (present-day Israel). I wanted to write about this marvelous experience of life and laughter, but now I am writing about death and sorrow. Two days before the attack, I was supposed to travel to Geneva to participate in a summer school training program for which I have been preparing for seven months and which concludes today. I booked two flights both from Egypt and Jordan, but missed both. The Israelis never approved my permit to travel through Erez checkpoint in the north of Gaza, even though I applied three times, and Rafah crossing , the southern land border with Egypt , has been consistently sealed off. I am not attending the course, though I still receive emails related to it. Instead, I am living this war….more
