Choosing capitulation over resistance
Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)3/23/2014
PA official Nabil Shaath declared that, should Israel fail to comply with the scheduled prisoners’ release, Palestinians would ‘immediately’ resort to international institutions to strengthen chances of recognitionThe peace negotiations which have embroiled Palestinians in further loss of land and autonomy have descended into a major capitulation to imperialist demands. Compromised before commencement due to an agreement brokered by the US, in which PA President Mahmoud Abbas forfeited the right to resort to international institutions, the rapid deterioration of Palestinian freedom has prompted a delayed reversal of the intention to seek international recognition.
Following Tzipi Livni’s insistence that Israel is under no obligation to release Palestinian political prisoners from Israeli jails, PA official Nabil Shaath declared that, should Israel fail to comply with the scheduled prisoners’ release, Palestinians would “immediately” resort to international institutions to strengthen chances of recognition. However, the avenue has been reduced to an alternative determined unjustly by the outcome of the diplomatic dispute concerning the prisoners’ release; in reality, though, the international platform can and should be used to articulate Palestinians’ legitimacy as constructed by the identities shaping the population throughout decades of sanctioned colonial violence against them.
The possibility of appealing to the international platform was discussed previously so there is nothing immediate about the diluted threat. Palestinian Permanent Observer to the UN Riyad Mansour articulated the intention while addressing the organisation, prompting further discourse mired in compromise from the PA. However, due to the PA’s prior acquiescence to Israeli and US demands, any allure attributed to possible international recognition is already distorted and hampered by various factors, notably the corrosion of the PA’s political leadership and its ramifications upon Palestinians, as well as the imperialist structure of the UN and affiliated entities.more..e-mail

An Israeli takeover of the Palestinian Authority?
Alan Hart, Redress3/23/2014
On the face of it that s a silly question and the speculation it represents that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas could be replaced by an Israeli agent or asset is not worthy of discussion. But before dismissing it readers might do what I did and consider two things.
The first is that Muhammad Dahlan, formerly one of the most powerful Fatah leaders and almost certainly the one who administered for Israel the polonium that killed Yasser Arafat, is now putting a big effort into getting rid of Abbas by one means or another and replacing him with guess who? himself.
In passing, it is interesting to note that according to a recent report in the Israeli newspaper Maariv, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu s special envoy, Yitzhak Molcho, is in a secret dialogue with Dahlan who spends his time shuttling between Cairo and the United Arab Emirates, where he currently lives. One assumption has to be that Netanyahu is hoping that if Dahlan became president of the Palestinian Authority (PA) he would go much further than collaborator Abbas in delivering for Israel. (Also worth noting is that Dahlan speaks fluent Hebrew. He learned to do so during his 11 spells in Israeli jails between 1981 and 1986).
The second consideration is Israel s track record in successfully placing its agents inside Arab institutions and organizations at very high levels.
I ll give two examples to make the point but first a note on the need for some precision with the terminology. In the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict, the terms collaborator and agent or asset are not necessarily one and the same.

The Similarities Between Mahmoud Abbas and Mangosuthu Buthelezi
Rumy Hasan, CounterPunch3/21/2014
Paths of Collaboration
When Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority (PA), visited South Africa for Nelson Mandela s memorial, he aroused controversy at a press conference on 11th December by declaring:
No we do not support the boycott of Israel & But we ask everyone to boycott the products of the settlements. Because the settlements are in our territories. It is illegal. & But we don t ask anyone to boycott Israel itself. We have relations with Israel, we have mutual recognition of Israel (Quoted in The Star, South Africa, 11th December 2013).
Despite the growing influence of the BDS (Boycott, Divestments and Sanc
tions) campaign against Israel (for example, on the 9th February, the Israeli newspaper Ha aretz reported that Netanyahu convenes ministers to discuss growing Israel economic boycott threats ) Abbas and the PA have never supported it so his comments were a confirmation of this stance. This flows from the Oslo Accords of September 1993 (Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements) to which Abbas is strongly wedded. Article XI concerns Israeli-Palestinian Cooperation in Economic Fields; Annex III concerns the Protocol on Israeli-Palestinian Cooperation in Economic and Development Programs and Annex IV concerns the Protocol on Israeli-Palestinian Cooperation Concerning Regional Development Programs.

Given Oslo s stress on cooperation, acts of non-cooperation such as BDS are excluded. Pioneered in apartheid South Africa, the aim of BDS by civil society is to apply non-violent measures including rigorously and consistently exposing the crimes of the targeted regime to fight against injustice and repression where the government concerned refuses to undertake meaningful reforms, and where international institutions are unwilling to robustly intervene. Effective BDS, therefore, implies harming a regime in order to force change. Abbas and the PA diligently adhere to this interpretation so not only do they oppose BDS, they also refrain from diligently publicising the myriad breaches of international laws and conventions by Israel.more..e-mail

Reining in Israeli collaborators in Gaza
Ahmad Qasim, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)3/21/2014
‘The enemy is constantly trying to recruit new collaborators in order to penetrate our internal front. But our security officers are working around the clock to counter the Zionist espionage measures’ – Islam Shahwan, spokesperson of the Gaza Ministry of the Interior
Since the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas-ruled Gaza that ended eight days of war in November 2012, both sides have been engaged in what is known as the “battle of minds”.
In the past two years, the Hamas-run Ministry of the Interior has announced at least two amnesty campaigns and rehabilitation programmes for collaborators working in Gaza and spying for Israel.
Since taking control of Gaza in 2007, one of the priorities of the government, especially with regards internal security, has been to work hard to combat the phenomenon of collaboration.
A ministry spokesperson in Gaza said the phenomenon of collaboration is miniscule and has declined as many have been arrested and others have turned themselves in.
He added that these collaborators, however, pose a real danger to the unity of the Palestinian people and their resistance against Israel, which has sealed off the narrow coastal enclave by land, sea and air.
The internal security of the Ministry of the Interior has held many lectures, workshops and awareness campaigns at different institutions including schools and mosques as well as local channels and radio stations to educate people about the different techniques used by the Israeli intelligence services to recruit informants.more..e-mail

Internalized Oppression: Yet another Loss for an Occupied Nation
Palestine Chronicle: 23 Mar 2014 – By Samah Jabr Jerusalem, Palestine The chronic tyranny brought by the Israeli occupation has had a devastating effect on the wellbeing of the Palestinian community. But one of the worst effects is the internalization of oppression and the undermining of Palestinian s collective self-concept. I have observed that since the 2006 elections in Palestine which were followed by an arrest of the elected parliamentarians and an international boycott of the elected government the vigorous spirit of the Palestinian community that had previously evolved during long years of resistance has finally been reduced to a state of demoralization. The undermining of this election represented an additional bitter blow after the more subtle impact of the Oslo s Accords, which had been originally promoted as part of the Palestinian liberation project. However, reports published on the Accord s 20th anniversary showed that during this period the number of Israeli settlers in the West Bank had doubled and…more
