Can Maduro Emulate Castro and Assad to Keep NATO’s Imperialist Hands Off Venezuela?By Gilbert Mercier

16 February 2019 — The News Junkie Post

Imperial logic I: External crises distract from internal ones

Empires with internal problems tend to create external crises to distract the public opinion and unite their political and economical ruling class in a fictitious nationalistic fervor. The current United States policy of overt regime change in Venezuela, backed entirely by its NATO vassals, follows an evergreen imperial playbook of creating new crises to obscure failures and divisions.

Inside the neoliberal laboratory preparing for the theft of Venezuela’s economy By Justin Podur

17 February 2019 — Justin Podur

Dilma Rousseff was president of Brazil until overthrown in a soft coup in 2016. Hugo Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002. Maduro is being overthrown at the time of writing (2019).

As we watch a US-backed coup unfold in a distant country, as in Venezuela today, our eyes are drawn to the diplomatic, military, and economic elements of the US campaign. The picture of a scowling John Bolton with a big yellow notepad with the message “5,000 troops to Colombia” reveals the diplomatic and military elements. The New York Times headline “U.S. Sanctions Are Aimed at Venezuela’s Oil. Its Citizens May Suffer First” reveals the economic element.

What Is Vladimir Putin Really Threatening? By Phil Butler

17 February 2019 — New Eastern Outlook

Half a century from now historians and social scientists will wrestle with the defining questions at the dawn of the 21st-century. And unless I miss my guess, lucid researchers, philosophers, and professors will discuss what exactly it was that Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened. This should also be the most imperative question for today.

On Bolton’s Orders, US Ambassadors Chastise Governments By Wayne Madsen

17 February 2019 — Strategic Culture Foundation

US National Security Adviser John Bolton may be known for a lot of things, but “diplomat” is not one of them. In 2005, Bolton was never confirmed by the US Senate to be George W. Bush’s ambassador to the United Nations because the walrus-mustachioed neo-conservative ideologue had made past comments deriding the UN as a useless organization. In 1994, Bolton infamously said, “There is no United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world, and that’s the United States, when it suits our interests and when we can get others to go along… The [UN] Secretariat Building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost ten stories today, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.”

Laughter for All (Financial) Times By James Petras

16 February 2019 — James Petras

Introduction: In these times, when the United States pursues an unprecedented military build-up, promotes coups and trade wars, breaks weapons agreements, organizes the illegal seizure of overseas financial accounts, building barriers and walls along the southern border, Washington can count on the mass media to provide a variety of propaganda messages, ranging from the predictable ‘yellow ’ to the sophisticated ‘serious press’.

The ‘lost’ Archives

17 February 2019 — The New Dark Age

This version of my online life kicked off in March 2003, coincident with the invasion of Iraq by the barbarians. WordPress didn’t exist then, most ‘blogs’ were handcrafted as was mine. I wrote every page in HTML using a piece of software called Cyber Studio, every page viewed existed as an actual ‘flat’ file, perhaps with some links to graphics, but there was no database, or style sheets, or any of the tools used today.

Simple and fast, they’re great for text, they can be searched online just like a database-driven site but you couldn’t keep track of how the content was used, except very crudely but worst of all, when I switched over to WordPress, I ‘lost’ about 20,000 stories! Everything I’d published between 2003-2010 needed to be imported into the WordPress database, one file at a time! Not only that, I had to ‘clean up’ the texts, find any graphics they linked to before I could republish them. It’s a mammoth task and bloody tedious! The problem is that there’s a lot of good stuff ‘locked’ away that I would like to make available once more to a new audience.

It was seeing that someone had accessed my brief tribute to my friend Edward Teague (Postman Patel to many) that got me looking for the work I’d published of Edward’s including one we co-wrote on 7/7. So far I’ve located 23 stories by Edward that I’ve moved here. There may be more.

I met Edward in 2003 and we immediately hit it off. Erudite and to my mind an excellent, witty commentator on our insane times, I’ve ‘rescued’ 23 of his essays. I spent a memorable few days with Edward in his home town, Bolton, a few years before his untimely demise. He became Craig Murray’s election agent when Craig contested the intellectually-challenged Jack Straw’s Burnley seat and learnt, first-hand, just how undemocratic our democracy really is. He also introduced me to his fellow pigeon racers in his local boozer.

Find them here: https://williambowles.info/category/edward-teague/

And I have discovered that Edward’s site is still available! http://postmanpatel.blogspot.com/
