Reading matter that really matters. Seven new books on how the world works, from cells to imperialism

Ecosocialist Bookshelf is a monthly column, hosted by Ian Angus. Books described here may be reviewed at length in future. Inclusion of a book does not imply endorsement, or that C&C agrees with everything (or even anything!) these books say.

Months after being imprisoned on a murder charge, three leaders of the eKhenana Commune of Abahlali baseMjondolo have been finally granted bail. Their arrests are part of a lengthy history of violent persecution of the shack dwellers’ movement

Almost as soon as major Nato countries, led by the US, promised to supply Ukraine with battle tanks, the cry went up warning that tanks alone would be unlikely to turn the war’s tide against Russia.

Earlier today two large earthquakes have caused widespread damage in south Turkey and north Syria:
Nine hours after a first earthquake of magnitude M7.8 that hits south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, February 6th 2023 at 1h17 UTC, a second M7.5 occurs (at 10h24 UTC) 100km further north. More information on the main shock (M7.8) is available here and for the 7.5 (here).
Gautam Adani (Photo: counterview.net) A SMALL U.S. investor firm has challenged the Indian behemoth, the Adani group, and shaken it to its foundations. The Hindenburg Research, a short selling firm, brought out a 129-page report on the Adani group marshaling evidence of all the funding operations and offshore activities of the 578 subsidiaries and shell companies linked to the seven listed companies of the Adani group. The report states that this is the “biggest con in corporate history”.
“The theories of John Maynard Keynes provide the sound intellectual framework for the views which trade unionists had always instinctively held and known to be right” (TUC, 1968, p. 85)
The ideas and theories of John Maynard Keynes still dominate the economic views and policy proposals of the leaders of the labour movement in the major capitalist economies. Keynes is seen as offering a ‘third way’ between the pro-capitalist ‘free market’ economics that dominates the universities (and among the strategic advisers of government) and the opposite of dangerously revolutionary Marxian economics. Keynes argued that, with a judicious range of policy measures, capitalism can be made to work better and can be managed so that it meets the needs of the many, without disrupting the social structure of society.

I just love Ahmad Jamal!! WB
Ahmad Jamal became a significant pianist in the early 1950s and he was still at the top in 2017 when he was 87.
Jamal’s “less-is-more” approach was a contrast to the dominant bebop style in his early days, his use of space and dynamics in his continuous close interaction with his sidemen remained a constant, and he continued to grow within his own individual style for decades.
On this intriguing and often-surprising version of “Autumn Leaves,” Jamal is joined by bassist James Cammack, drummer Herlin Riley, and percussionist Manolo Badrena

[I wrote this in December 2019, and, I feel it to be still relevant today within the context of the recently published 2-part BBC Documentary on PM Modi, as well as the nearly 65% loss in Market Value of Adani Enterprises after the publication of the Hindenberg Research Report; that shorted their shares.
The federated Indian Republic is a vast, diverse and complex nation and I hope that readers outside the territory of the Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic of India, (i.e, the actual official designation of India as defined in her Constitution) would see these images, the history and stories of a part of India that is hardly known by most people, (even within India itself) – Supratim Barman]

[Source: laptrinhx.com]During a recent interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, former Chancellor and European political heavyweight Angela Merkel revealed that the Minsk accords, a comprehensive 2015 diplomatic treaty, agreed by the EU, United States, Russia, and Kyiv to end the civil war in eastern Ukraine, was essentially subverted by the Ukrainians in an attempt to buy time to expand its military capabilities.
In 1964 Richard Hofstadter wrote about The Paranoid Style in American Politics:
Events since 1939 have given the contemporary right-wing paranoid a vast theatre for his imagination, full of rich and proliferating detail, replete with realistic cues and undeniable proofs of the validity of his suspicions. The theatre of action is now the entire world, and he can draw not only on the events of World War II, but also on those of the Korean War and the Cold War. Any historian of warfare knows it is in good part a comedy of errors and a museum of incompetence; but if for every error and every act of incompetence one can substitute an act of treason, many points of fascinating interpretation are open to the paranoid imagination. In the end, the real mystery, for one who reads the primary works of paranoid scholarship, is not how the United States has been brought to its present dangerous position but how it has managed to survive at all.

Being labeled a Russian propagandist all day every day for criticizing US foreign policy is really weird, but one advantage it comes with is a useful perspective on what people have really been talking about all these years when they warn of the dangers of “Russian propaganda”.
