India–Pakistan war: The winners and the losers

    20 May, 2025 — The Cradle

Chinese military hardware stole the show, French ones lost their stock, India’s clout took hits, and Pakistanis crowed. Yet, ultimately, the brief, hot India–Pakistan war was a victory only for the Global North’s divide-and-rule project for the Global South.

Vijay Prashad: Israel’s Final Solution for Gaza

    Thursday, 22 May 2025 — Consortium News

Consider the warnings and the deeds. Consider the genocide

Israeli airstrikes light up the streets of the Gaza Strip, sometime during the 2023- 2025 bombing campaign.  (Jaber Jehad Badwan / Wikimedia Commons /CC BY-SA 4.0)

    Z Network

In early May, the security cabinet of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met and agreed that Israel would “capture” Gaza and remove its Palestinian population “to protect it.”

To achieve this policy of annexation of Gaza, the Israelis tightened their siege by preventing the entry of food, water, electricity and other humanitarian aid (they had already enforced a blockade of aid since March 2).

India: Government illegally evicted environmental campaigner Aruna Rodrigues, court says

GMWatch has received the good news that the environmental campaigner Aruna Rodrigues, who was forcibly evicted from her home by weapons-touting Indian army personnel just before Christmas in 2022, has won her case against the Indian government in court. The High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Indore ruled that the government’s actions in evicting Aruna and taking possession of her house were illegal. In the strongly worded ruling, the judge said: “The manner in which the defendants [the government] have taken possession of the disputed property is wholly illegal and defies all canons of law.” The court ordered the government to return to Aruna the keys to her home by 31 June.

The Labour Government cozying up to Big Tech

    Thursday, 22 May 2025 — Foxglove

Foxglove does a lot of work in the UK. We’re concerned about the direction of government tech policy. Keir Starmer’s team seem to be getting far too cosy with Big Tech companies, and aren’t taking enough care to ensure new technology works, is safe, and is in the public interest.

This week we’ve written about a couple of worrying recent developments…

The UK Home Office is boasting about a new “Chat-GPT-style software” trialled for use in asylum decisions – despite evidence that it’s dangerously flawed.

Karim Khan, chief of the International Criminal Court (ICC), had dared to go after Israeli officials for war crimes and was instantly digitally silenced. His accounts were frozen. His name smeared. Many claim Trump uses “coded” language when targeting oppressed groups. There’s no code here—just plain racism from Donald Trump.

In a stark display of racist arrogance, President Donald Trump derailed a recent meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa when he launched into a rant alleging that the government of South Africa is engaged in “white genocide.”

How the International Monetary Fund Underdevelops Africa: The Twenty-First Newsletter (2025)

    Thursday, 22 May 2025 — The Tricontinental

The art in this newsletter was produced by Tricontinental’s art department for our May dossier, Africa’s Faustian Bargain with the International Monetary Fund.

    Dear friends,

Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

At the start of 2025, Sudan registered an alarming debt-to-GDP (Gross Domestic Product) ratio of 252%. This means that the country’s total public debt is 2.5 times the size of its entire annual economic output. It is not hard to understand why Sudan is in such dire straits: as we outlined in last week’s newsletter, the country has been engulfed in a conflict for decades, which has severely disrupted any possibility of economic growth and financial stability. Yet, in a way, Sudan – one of the richest countries in terms of resources but poorest in terms of household income and wealth – is also representative of what has been happening on the African continent. As of 2022, the average debt-to-GDP ratio in Sub-Saharan countries was 60%, having doubled from 30% in 2013. This rise in indebtedness is shocking.

Just 100 corporations behind a fifth of global extractive conflicts, study reveals – and Bayer-Monsanto is one of them

Just one hundred corporations are behind a fifth of the documented extractive conflicts worldwide, exposing how companies from the Global North seize resources and profits, while social and ecological harms are imposed on the Global South, according to a recent study by Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). The findings are based on the analysis of data from the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas), an interactive map that locates and documents more than 4,300 extractive conflicts around the world – such as disputed mines, pipelines, or hydropower dams resisted by environmental justice activists and local communities. The most conflictive 100 corporations – including Shell, Glencore, Repsol, and Bayer-Monsanto – represent only 2% of the 5,500 companies documented in the EJAtlas and yet are involved in 20% of the conflicts analysed. Biden’s Fate and Israel’s Sadistic Revenge

Margaret Kimberley, BAR Executive Editor and Senior Columnist

Israel is starving Gazans to death and continuing its bombing attacks on civilians. Israel also specializes in personal revenge, targeting men, women, and children who might be the subject of international press attention and remind the world of that state’s sadistic nature. There are many accomplices to these crimes, but Joe Biden’s role in giving protection to a genocide cannot be forgotten.

    Colby Byrd
    400 boys 1
Peeling back the layers of Netflix animated short, “400 Boys,” reveals a story of a people’s struggle for liberation.

The people’s struggle against colonialism and imperialism is a struggle of epic proportions, wherever it takes place. No liberation struggle is waged without involving all aspects of society. Bridges once burned due to the symptoms of imperialism (like racism and misogyny) are rebuilt stronger, made unmovable, connecting people to march together to fight the real enemy – the common enemy.

The NHS 10 year plan will be dragged by political priorities to focus on the first five years – what is easiest to be done in this Parliament for headlines.

Even assuming the best of intentions, the imposition of Palantir, the abolition of NHS England, the single patient record, and the transformation to digital solely with the NHS App are all about giving the Department of Health levers to change your care.

Analysis: Clean energy just put China’s CO2 emissions into reverse for first time

    15 May 2025 — Carbon Brief

For the first time, the growth in China’s clean power generation has caused the nation’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to fall despite rapid power demand growth.

The new analysis for Carbon Brief shows that China’s emissions were down 1.6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025 and by 1% in the latest 12 months.

Electricity supply from new wind, solar and nuclear capacity was enough to cut coal-power output even as demand surged, whereas previous falls were due to weak growth.

The analysis, based on official figures and commercial data, shows that China’s CO2 emissions have now been stable, or falling, for more than a year.

However, they remain only 1% below the latest peak, implying that any short-term jump could cause China’s CO2 emissions to rise to a new record.

    Other key findings include:

    • Growth in clean power generation has now overtaken the current and long-term average growth in electricity demand, pushing down fossil fuel use.
    • Power-sector emissions fell 2% year-on-year in the 12 months to March 2025.
    • If this pattern is sustained, then it would herald a peak and sustained decline in China’s power-sector emissions.
    • The trade “war” initiated by US president Donald Trump has prompted renewed efforts to shift China’s economy towards domestic consumption, rather than exports.
    • A new pricing policy for renewables has caused a rush to install before it takes effect.
    • There is a growing gap that would need to be bridged if China is to meet the 2030 emissions targets it pledged under the Paris Agreement.
