▪️As warned, the US predicated tariffs on “reindustrialization” to sell to a gullible public, but was always aimed as preparations for isolating and eventually warring with China;
▪️None of the actual measures needed to reindustrialize were even proposed let alone implemented (education reform, nationalizing industry, infrastructure investments);
▪️Nations the US has politically captured obediently accepted the tariffs and are now going to be organized into a united front a la Biden vs. Russia but against China – all as Trump dishonestly “seeks peace” with Russia;
▪️Recall US Sec. of State Rubio began ramping up pressure on China’s island province of Taiwan, rewriting the State Dept’s website, erasing admissions the US does NOT recognize Taiwan “independence;”
▪️Americans voted for Trump to end Biden policies – but got a super-sized continuity of agenda instead;

Dear friends,
Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.
In the last days of March, I was in China’s new city of Xiong’an, less than a two-hour drive from Beijing. The city is being built to relieve congestion in the capital, but it will also be home to women and men who are eager to develop China’s new quality productive forces and will be the centre of universities, hospitals, research institutes, and innovative technology companies, including high-tech farming. Xiong’an has the ambition of reaching ‘net-zero’ carbon dioxide emissions while using big data to harness social science to improve the quality of people’s everyday lives.

The world has an oligarchy problem. It threatens economic and social stability and accelerates planetary environmental destruction and global warming. While much has been written about Russian oligarchs, it has become clear that the West, particularly the U.S., has a similar and growing oligarchy problem. Thom Hartmann writes how ” The American Oligarchs Have Arrived to Destroy U.S. Democracy.” George Monbiot describes the UK’s oligarchy and how they “seek the destruction of oversight”, which has led to “UK bodies such as the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive” to have been “comprehensively gutted.”

American political scientist and activist Norman Finkelstein, though the son of Polish Holocaust survivors, has never been afraid to speak his mind about Israel. At a February 2025 event sponsored by CAIR Florida (the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations), Finkelstein delivered fiery comments about Israel’s in-your-face brand of genocide:

Trump is not unique in the collective west. As the crisis of capitalism deepens, “democratic” states intensify repression and criminalize dissent.

An influential committee of MPs has launched an inquiry into the long-term future of the UK’s water supply. This could be an opportunity for MPs to demand answers about the giant “hyperscale” data centres which Big Tech companies want to build across the country – Foxglove needs your help to get those MPs’ attention.

Doctors and patients have spent a decade on the “exciting” end of a triple pendulum, living the random changes in direction that come from those incoherent pressures.

The US is preparing to subject its own population as well as those of its supposed “allies” to immense long-term economic, social, and political pain. The cost-of-living crisis in the US will only grow worse. The US hopes that it can endure economic pain and disruption at home and abroad better than the emerging multipolar world can. Multipolarism’s survival will depend on proving otherwise.”

As Washington’s latest military campaign drags into its second month, Yemen’s battle lines remain firmly drawn—with growing questions over whether Riyadh and Abu Dhabi are next to be pulled into a war they can neither control nor win.
Photo Credit: The CradleThe US war on Yemen, now in its second round, has passed the one-month mark with no clear gains and no timeline for success. What’s emerging instead is the growing risk of escalation—one that could force regional players, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, into direct confrontation.

There is indeed a new weapon out there; enriched uranium does not exist in nature: it is man-made (al Mayadeen English; illustrated by Batoul Chamas)

In February 2025, a tense exchange unfolded in the Oval Office between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US Vice President JD Vance. Vance challenged Starmer face-to-face, asserting that UK policies, like the Online Safety Act, infringe on free expression. Starmer swiftly countered, saying he was proud of the UK’s long-standing tradition of free speech, adding it “will last for a very, very long time.”

Almost no one expected it, yet it was predictable: China has entered the global AI competition and intends to win.
China takes measurements
Chinese companies in the AI field aim to achieve success in the same way that Chinese companies in the electric car, renewable energy and biopharmaceutical sectors are conquering the market: by radically changing the economics of these sectors. In other words, they aim to outcompete their rivals by making AI adoption low-cost and large-scale, thus eliminating rivals that operate with high-cost, high-margin business models.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian (C) at an exhibition “National Day of Nuclear Technology”, Tehran, April 9, 2025 With the foreplay over and US-Iranian talks commencing in Muscat on Saturday, a constructive engagement has begun in right earnestness. The sure sign of it is that Iran’s currency rose nearly 6 percent on Sunday. The Tehran bazaar, the weathervane of Shia politics, has spoken.

On March 22nd, this journalist detailed the findings of a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on “Israel’s systematic use of sexual, reproductive and other forms of gender-based violence since 7 October 2023.” That investigation focused primarily on the hideous, industrial scale rape and sexual abuse of male and female Palestinian detainees in Zionist Occupation Force prisons, a phenomenon so pervasive it can only be dedicated, determined policy, signed off upon and directed by the highest levels of the Israeli government.

This is the final article for what was one of the most eventful weeks in the financial markets since the onset of the pandemic. At least then it was known the virus could kill, now nothing is known about what the Trump virus is up to. Trump has a proud record. Of the last ten most volatile days in the stock markets since the War, nine of them have occurred under his presidential watch.
Trump declared Liberation Day on the 9th April. The way things are turning out its more like Incarceration Day as accusations of insider trading swirls around his administration. The volatility driven by Trump’s on-off tariffs has created enormous speculative opportunities for his circle, for MAGA congressmen/women and for traders. (I will analyse bank profits further down the article but their trading desks reaped tens of billions in profits.) With so much power in one man’s hands, and with this man’s previous record, he was bound to cast a long shadow of corruption, even when the sun does not shine. Its all there in his book: The Art of the Grifter.
