Since U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February to impose a 10% tariff on all imports, the world has witnessed a confounding series of unilateral tariffs placed on both friends and foes of the U.S.. On self-declared ‘Liberation Day’, on 2 April 2025, Trump unleashed a series of ‘reciprocal’ tariffs on 57 countries, with China being amongst the hardest hit with an additional 34% tariff. A week later, Trump abruptly announced in a Truth Social post a 90-day reprieve of tariffs on countries that ‘have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way’, while those on Chinese goods soared to 125%. The tariff on China was then raised to 145% on 10 April 2025.

(In a bulletin on February 24, BlackRock had anticipated that the German vote would allow for increased spending.) A few days later, Merz confirmed radical proposals (the largest overhaul of monetary policy since the reunification, alongside a constitutional reform) aimed at relaxing restrictions on debt accumulation to enable increased defence expenditure – in stark contrast, of course, to the fiscal austerity enforced across the EU over the past two decades, particularly the sadistic measures imposed on Greece.

Eighty years ago, on 11 April 1945, units of General George S. Patton’s 4th Armoured Division of the US armed forces drove toward the city of Weimar, Germany, where the Buchenwald concentration camp was located. Patton’s troops eventually took control of the camp, but soldiers’ statements, which were collected later by historians, suggest that the US tanks were not what liberated Buchenwald: the camp had already been seized by the organisation and courage of the prisoners who took advantage of the flight of German soldiers in the face of the Allied advance.
