That death toll inflicted by state forces working with neo-Nazi paramilitaries on the orders of an unelected fascist junta in Kiev – backed by the West – comes days after dozens of Ukrainian citizens were killed in the eastern Donetz region and in the south-western port city of Odessa…

The big question will be how China perceives the reset of the pivot strategy by Obama. While Beijing is intensely watching Obama’s policies on Ukraine, given its far-reaching impact on the world order, it will be wrong to rush to judgment that China views all of American policy through the prism of the most difficult crisis of the day, rather than taking the longer view. The coming weeks and months will show whether Beijing would choose to exploit the recrudescence of old European enmities (and America’s entanglement in them, being a congenital Atlantic power), to lean hard on China’s neighbors in the region…

…The meeting of the energy ministers of the G7 – Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the U.S., France and Japan – ended with no result. Planned with the goal of creating a unified anti-Russian front on energy, the G7 meeting brought forth yet another vague declaration about the principles of policy in this sphere saying that the ministers are «extremely concerned by the energy security implications of developments in Ukraine» for Europe. But the contradictions in the ranks of the G7 have not gone away. The implementation of Moscow May 7 agreement may lead to a settlement. There is a long way to go. The ball is on the side of Kiev which must stop the punitive actions against its own people in the south-eastern part of the country… Those who are pursued by Neo-Nazi for their support of Ukraine becoming a federal state and Russian Ukrainians defending their right to speak their language – they all cherish hopes that the Putin – Burkhalter summit laid a foundation for peaceful settlement of Ukrainian crisis. The President Putin’s comments evoked appropriate reaction on the part of business circles. The ruble has significantly grown in relation to the euro. It means business gave the Swiss President a chance to catch up in popularity with President Putin. A few months ago the Russian President was called by Western media number one politician of the world. It testifies to the fact that they do recognize the important role Russia plays in European and global politics.

On May 6, US State Secretary John Kerry met Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs & Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission. The issue of Ukraine was high on the agenda… First of all, Washington should use its leverage and exert influence on the Kiev interim government to make it stop further escalation of tension and use of force. The process will not move ahead till the junta conducts the «anti-terrorist» operation which, in fact, is a punitive action against civilians. In mid-April the secretary of the International Criminal Court (ICC) reported that the Government of Ukraine had lodged a declaration accepting its jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed on its territory from November 21, 2013 to February 22, 2014. Several days later, the Prosecutor of the ICC, F. Bensouda, decided to open a preliminary examination into the situation in Ukraine. In connection with this a number of important international law issues have arisen… In this case the collection of lawyers called the “International Criminal Court” refuse point blank to see that those who call themselves the government of Ukraine are nothing of the sort. That is, the ICC has become a party in the conflict in Ukraine. This fact deprives the institution of all signs of independence and impartiality…

While referring to the ‘pivot’ strategy in Asia, Gen. John Paxton, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps posed a key question during a recent speech, «Do we [US] have enough people and enough ships to do it?» He lamented, «We are on our way… to a less than a 300 ship navy. We are on our way to a 175,000 man Marine Corps». According to Gen. Paxton, the Marine Corps needs 54 amphibious ships to do its job, while current plans call for only 38 and that too is likely to shrink to 33. He asked, «With the dollars we have, and the ships we have and the aircraft we have, and the people we have, are we going to be ready to do what we need to do?»…

The Council of Europe, a leading European organization, was founded 65 years ago to promote cooperation between all countries of Europe in the areas of legal standards, human rights, democratic development, the rule of law and cultural co-operation… It should be noted that the organization has actually stopped to tackle acute social, economic and human rights issues – the problems that plague European states. Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland had to admit in his recent report that Europe faced a human rights crisis which was a real burning problem. According to him, «Human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe now face a crisis unprecedented since the end of the Cold War. Serious violations – including corruption, immunity from prosecution, impunity, human trafficking, racism, hate speech and discrimination – are on the rise throughout the continent. People’s rights are also threatened by the impact of the economic crisis and growing inequalities. The Council of Europe and its member States must act urgently to stop this erosion of fundamental rights».

The foreign chiefs of 28 EU member-states are going to get together in the capital of Belgium on May 5 to discuss more sanctions against Russia. …On April 22, Sweden’s centre-right government coalition announced plans to increase military spending, with an emphasis on more fighter jets and submarines if the four parties win the September elections. If the coalition were to remain in power, it would aim to increase the military budget by five billion kronor ($760 million) annually, starting in 2015. The government said that spending would rise gradually until 2024, when the annual defense budget increase would be around 5.5 billion kronor (€604 million, US $835 million) greatly exceeding previous estimates. Khatyn Massacre Repeated in Odessa

Khatyn was a village in Belarus, the Minsk region. On March 22, 1943, the entire population of the village was massacred by Nazi… On May 2, 2014 the tragedy was repeated in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa. Around 15 hundred Pravy Sector militants and football hoodlums attacked the tent camp of anti-government protesters. Molotov cocktails were tossed. The tent camp was burnt to the ground. Many anti-Kiev protesters eventually hid inside the local House of Trade Unions. The first floor of the Trade Unions building was soon engulfed in flames. The people inside appeared to be trapped. Dozens eventually burnt alive or suffocated to death. To escape the fire and smoke, people were hanging out of windows and sitting on windowsills. In sheer desperation, some of them eventually jumped to the ground. Many of those who managed to escape the fire were then brutally beaten by Neo-Nazi. They used sticks against their victims. The actions were accompanied by the national hymn of Ukraine…
