Western coalition forces have been using depleted uranium in their airstrikes on crisis-hit Libya, says an expert, despite the forces’ denial of using the highly-poisonous metal.
Conn Hallinan, a columnist with Foreign Policy in Focus, told Russia Today news network on Wednesday that after examining the impact wounds left on tanks in Libya, he is almost certain that depleted uranium is being utilized.
‘Politically, it’s a bad idea. Medically, it’s an extremely bad idea. It’s just one of those things that’s an effective weapon that you have to step away from,’ he went on to say.
He added that given the amount of depleted uranium in the hands of Washington, the US military is going to only further saturate foreign battlefields with the toxic metal for years to come.
Depleted uranium has a half-life of 4.5 billion years and has thus earned the title ‘The silent killer that will never stop killing’ in troubled Libya.
Shells, bombs and cruise missiles tipped with depleted uranium and tungsten easily pierce through heavy armor and fortifications.
Air, water and soil are also contaminated when such weapons are used.
Dr. Doug Rokke, the ex-director of the Pentagon’s Depleted Uranium Project, says there is no way to totally decontaminate an area hit with uranium.
Serious long-term health problems caused by the use of depleted uranium in bombs can range from cancer to leukemia and genetic mutations.
The United Nations has prohibited the manufacture, testing, use, sale and stockpiling of depleted uranium weapons.
The US dropped thousands of depleted uranium bombs on the Iraq city of Fallujah in 2003, which killed thousands of people.
A great proportion of all births in Fallujah since the strike have suffered from abnormalities and the rate of mutation among newborns is higher than what was found in Japan after America attacked the Asian country during the Second World War.
US, British, French, Canadian, Danish and Belgian warplanes have launched strikes on Libya since March 19 under UN Security Council Resolution 1973 that authorized ‘all necessary measures’ to protect civilians.
This is while Libya continues to be struck with the conflict between revolutionaries and forces loyal to the North African country’s embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi.
AFP says that Gaddafi’s forces have killed at least 10,000 people during the ongoing fighting; and Libya’s National Transition Council said Tuesday that another 30,000 were wounded and 20,000 more are still missing.

With the Libyan rebels rejecting an African Union peace plan, there seems to be no end in sight for the conflict. The opposition is still relying on coalition forces to help its cause, but it seems they could prove more of a hindrance.
It has been claimed the allies have used depleted uranium in their attacks – a substance which causes cancer and mutations in those affected.
Libyan rebels could be seen climbing on a tank to celebrate one of the coalition’s latest successful strikes, unaware of the silent killer they may have been breathing in.
Gulf War veteran and depleted uranium expert Melissa Sterry believes the rebels on the tank would have been getting low-level radiation exposure.
Though the western coalition denies using depleted uranium in bombings in the country, others say there is a good chance weapons with the highly poisonous radioactive element have been used.

No matter what spin you hear coming out of the US, Washington is very much in control of the conflict in Libya and in control of what goes on at the United Nations, and believe me, we have only seen Phase 1 of their objectives to force regime change and take control of the vast oil reserves in Libya.
The already US-manipulated UN is about to be yet again modified by puppet Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. I have never in my life seen such a weak Secretary General and he is an embarrassment to the General Assembly and those he represents. Perhaps we should reflect on the words of President Obama: ‘We will not – I repeat – we will not deploy any US troops on the ground’.

UK campaigners issue joint statement on use of depleted uranium in Libya
The UK Uranium Weapons Network and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today issued a joint statement of concern over the possible use of depleted uranium in Libya.
ICBUW Campaigners from the UK Uranium Weapons Network and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today expressed their growing alarm at the possibility that highly toxic and radioactive depleted uranium (DU) weapons have been used in Libya. The inhalation of DU particles, spread when the weapons hit their target, is thought to be linked to the sharp increases in cancer rates and birth defects reported in affected areas.

The likelihood of DU use in Libya has now increased following the deployment and use of A-10 and Harrier AV-8B aircraft. ICBUW calls for pressure to be brought on the US to clarify the situation, and to put DU ammunition beyond use.
A-10s are known to have been active in Libya on the 26th and 27th of March, and are likely to have been used in operations since those dates. The 30mm PGU-14 Armour Piercing Incendiary DU round is fired from the GAU-8 heavy rotary cannon fitted beneath the cockpit of the A-10. It was designed for attacking armoured vehicles from the air, the kind of mission currently being undertaken by the A-10s.

In the first 24 hours of the Libyan attack, US B-2s dropped forty-five 2,000-pound bombs. These massive bombs, along with the Cruise missiles launched from British and French planes and ships, all contained depleted uranium (DU) warheads.

Depleted uranium has been used for nearly 20 years as sub-ammunition of artillery shells in international conflicts like the two Iraq Wars and the NATO conflict with Serbia, but the long-term effects of it are unknown.
In Iraq, many doctors believe that the radiation leaked from old weapons used by foreign forces in 1991 and 2003 are continuing to have a deadly impact.
They fear that the remains of the substance are spreading cancer through the population and contaminating water.
Seven years after the invasion of Iraq, people there are still dying from its after-effects.
In cities and towns across the country, old munitions are leaking radiation, with horrific consequences.
‘The number of cancer cases among children increased by 227 per cent in the period from 2005 to 2007,’ stated Doctor K. Suleiman. ‘Experts at the University of Basra Research Center claim that toxic agents will continue having a harmful effect on human health for the next 50 years.’
During the Gulf War in 1991 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, coalition forces fired thousands of ‘depleted uranium’ shells.
Depleted uranium is a by-product of the enrichment process and its immense density makes it a powerful projectile. But it can leave a deadly legacy.
‘Depleted uranium, which was used back in 1991 and 2003, is the most dangerous substance. Experts reckon that over 350 tonnes of it were used in total. This substance will give out harmful radiation for years into the future,’ predicted Dr. Suleiman. ‘For instance, as many as 35 new forms of cancer not known to the World Health Organization were reported in June 2008.’
Two reports, one by the US army and the other by the World Health Organization, warned about the dangers of depleted uranium before the 2003 war.
When shells fell into the dust, they contaminated it, along with water sources nearby.
And when it is inhaled or drunk, radioactive material can sit in the body, damaging DNA and leading to cancer.
The Head of a humanitarian organization for children with cancer, L. Shakir, informs that ‘The reports say that the number of cancer patients is growing. But some doctors say it’s all within the norm and that the number of cancer cases here is smaller than in other countries. We need to consolidate our efforts in fighting cancer. The support of the state, represented by the Health Minister, is of paramount importance, as is the role of NGOs and international organizations.’
Officially, the US army is skeptical about the link between depleted uranium shells and cancer rates.
But where battles were fought, Iraqi doctors are struggling to cope with huge rises in numbers of tumors and birth defects and, for them, the link is obvious.
‘2,000 new cancer cases are reported in Basra annually. Our patients come from Basra, An-Nasiriyah, Amara and other provinces,’ Doctor Jivad Ali, an oncologist, said.”

Experts say the dramatic drop in Israel’s sperm count could eliminate their ability to reproduce.
Research by an Israeli doctor shows a significant drop in sperm count level and sperm motility among young Israeli soldiers in recent years. Sperm motility is the ability of sperm to move properly toward an egg.
It is attributed to the inhalation of DU aerosolized nano-particles; the dirty results of extra powerful weapons used by Israel and the U.S.
All of that military might as it turns out, could set the stage for a massive Israeli act of population suicide.
A study by Dr. Ronit Haimov-Kokhman released in November, showed a 40-percent decline in the concentration of sperm cells in Israeli sperm donors from 2004 to 2008, compared to samples taken between 1995 and 1999.
Many American and British soldiers who have returned from Iraq are complaining about Depleted Uranium-related illnesses. They accuse both the Pentagon and the UK Ministry of Defense of covering up. Studies conducted by a group of Italian researchers have revealed the presence of dangerous levels of toxins in the bodies of Palestinian victims of Israeli bombings during operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009. The results of tests conducted on a sample of 15 dead and wounded victims of the war on Gaza, in addition to another sample of 95 citizens, showed the presence of 30 toxic components, notably high levels of uranium. A senior Ministry of Health official in Gaza, Medhat Abbas, confirmed the findings during a press conference last Thursday.
According to Mr. Abbas, the study showed the presence of dangerous substances toxic to human embryos which distort and threaten infertility in men and women and affect genes. It was absorbed through the skin or the mouth during eating.
In a previous study, the same researchers emphasized that the soil of the Gaza Strip now contains toxic metals and carcinogens harmful to embryos. This was due, they claimed, to the absorption of materials used in the recent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
Gaza’s Health Minister, Dr Bassem Naim, said the study of the biological samples proved that the Israelis used internationally proscribed weapons against the Palestinians. He warned that the large percentage of toxic uranium in the territory would pose a real threat to future generations. Dr Naim added that his department will send the research findings to the relevant human rights authorities which are documenting Israeli war crimes in the territory.

Iraq occupation falls into media shadows

As Afghanistan has taken center stage in U.S. corporate media, with President Barack Obama announcing two major escalations of the war in recent months, the U.S. occupation of Iraq has fallen into the media shadows.
But while U.S. forces have begun to slowly pull back in Iraq, approximately 130,000 American troops and 114,000 private contractors still remain in the country (Congressional Research Service, 12/14/09)-along with an embassy the size of Vatican City. Upwards of 400 Iraqi civilians still die in a typical month (Iraq Body Count, 12/31/09), and fallout from the occupation that is now responsible, by some estimates, for 1 million Iraqi deaths (Extra!, 1/2/08) continues to severely impact Iraqis in ways that go uncovered by the U.S. press.

‘As bombs fall, civilians are not the only ones put at risk, and the lasting environmental impacts of the war may not be known for years, perhaps decades, to come.’
Shipping off 30,000 more troops to the land of the Taliban may be infuriating to devoted antiwar activists, but the toll the Afghanistan war is having on the environment should also force nature lovers into the streets in protest.
Natural habitat in Afghanistan has endured decades of struggle, and the War on Terror has only escalated the destruction. The lands most afflicted by warfare are home to critters that most Westerners only have a chance to observe behind cages in our city zoos: gazelles, cheetahs, hyenas, Turanian tigers and snow leopards among others.
Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), which was formed in 2005 to address environmental issues, has listed a total of 33 species on its Endangered list. By the end of this year, NEPA’s list may grow to over 80 species of plants and animals.
In 2003, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) released its evaluation of Afghanistan’s environmental issues. Titled “Post-Conflict Environmental Assessment,” the UNEP report claimed that war and long-standing drought “have caused serious and widespread land and resource degradation, including lowered water tables, desiccation of wetlands, deforestation and widespread loss of vegetative cover, erosion, and loss of wildlife populations.”
