Profiting from loss: how business in illegal Israeli settlements continues unchecked

18 February 2020 — Jonathan Cook

UN efforts to protect Palestinian land from economic exploitation are failing, and exposing the hypocrisy of western states

The National – 18 February 2020

After lengthy delays, the United Nations finally published a database last week of businesses that have been profiting from Israel’s illegal annexation and settlement activity in the West Bank.

The observer mission in Hebron acted as a restraint on the settlers’ worst excesses. Now that has come to an end

13 February 2019 — Jonathan Cook

The National – 10 February 2019

You might imagine that a report by a multinational observer force documenting a 20-year reign of terror by Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers against Palestinians, in a city under occupation, would provoke condemnation from European and US politicians.

But you would be wrong. The leaking in December of the report on conditions in the city of Hebron, home to 200,000 Palestinians, barely caused a ripple.

Video: Part 1 – The Empire Files: Home Demolitions for Illegal Settlements Surging

31 October 2016 — Youtube

The demolition of Palestinian homes for Israeli settlements reached a ten-year high in 2016. While this activity led by the fanatical settler movement is illegal under international law, it is completely aided and abetted by the Israeli government.

With hundreds on notice to be evicted and their homes destroyed, Abby Martin goes on-the-ground throughout the West Bank investigating this dire human rights situation. She speaks to residents living under regular settler attacks from encroaching settlements and outposts illegal even under Israeli law, and sees first-hand how this crisis is worsening. http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/the-empire-files-608068/

Let me make it clear: The policy of the United States of America with respect to all settlements is that they are illegitimate, and we oppose settlements taking place at any time, not just the time of the peace process.

BREAKING NEWS: Edinburgh Council Boycotts Veolia!!!

13 December, 2010 — Scottish PSC

Edinburgh Council has rejected Veolia’s attempt to take over public services in the city!

A Council report published 10th Dec 2010 indicates that Veolia is no longer being considered for any contracts in the city, despite having been seen as the leading contender for its environmental services bid.

Veolia works with Israeli authorities in Occupied Palestine to provide waste and transport services to Israel’s illegal settlements. The French multinational has already lost contracts across Europe due to sustained protest over its complicity in Israel’s war crimes.

This comes on top of similar losses throughout Europe and beyond as it becomes ever more clear that it no longer pays to profit from Israel’s Occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people.

BDS update: Anti-apartheid Hagues By Eric Walberg

24 November, 2010 — Eric Walberg

Despite the stranglehold Israel lobbies have on Euro-parliaments and politicians, there have been some surprisingly plucky official moves to protest illegal Israeli settlements recently, notes Eric Walberg

Israeli mayoral visits to Spain and the Netherlands were nixed in September because the delegation included leaders of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The visit of thirty Israeli mayors to the Netherlands was organised by the Israeli branch of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) after the Spanish municipal organisation cancelled a proposed visit in light of the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.

The Dutch conference was to be hosted by the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG), located in The Hague. The aim of the trip was purportedly to learn more about the Dutch system of local, regional and national authorities, though such official visits are really an Israeli ploy to provide de facto recognition of illegal settlements.

The Global Movement Spreads: New Wave of Protests in Hebron By Avital Aboody

28 April, 2010 — The Only Democracy?

tod-2.jpgOn April 24, 2010 at around 15:45 a group of approximately 50 Palestinian, Israeli, and International activists gathered in Hebron next to the checkpoint gate separating Shuhada Street from the Casbah. The protest was organized by a Palestinian group in Hebron called “Youth Against Settlements” and the organizers hope to hold these protests every week with the intention of disrupting the army-accompanied settler tour that goes through the Casbah (Old City) every Saturday. The Casbah is within H2, an area that comprises 20% of the city of Hebron and is considered Zone B, meaning that it is receives Palestinian municipal services but is under Israeli military control. Both Palestinians and Israelis can access the Casbah, but Palestinians are restricted from walking just a fewer meters further, beyond the imposing gate/checkpoint to the sight of the former marketplace, Shuhada Street. Tariq Shadid – Going it alone: a Third Intifada?

22 March, 2010 — Palestine Think Tank

It may well be that the citizens of the world, tired of hearing newscasts about Israel and the Palestinians, are not in the mood to hear it. Still, pressure in Palestine is building up quickly due to Israel’s continuing defiance of calls from around the world to halt settlement building in East Jerusalem and the other occupied territories. Simultaneously, we are hearing a clear increase in Palestinian calls for a Third Intifada, and it may well be that it is already underway. The failure of the international community to pressure Israel into abiding with international law, despite its astounding disrespect for human rights, its continuing territorial expansionism, and its flagrant violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention in every thinkable way, is threatening to yet again take its toll on the fate of the Palestinian people.
