Ahava BDS Campaign

15 October, 2010

Latest in the series of two weekly protest demos outside the Ahava shop in London, which markets so called “Israeli” goods which are in fact goods made in an illegal settlement on stolen Palestinian land with chemicals stolen from the Palestinian territory at the north western corner of the Dead Sea.

This explains Ahava’s relactance to go to court against pro-Palestinian activists as they know they are involved in the illegal sale of stolen goods.

BDS VICTORY: Veolia tries again to sell off its share in the Jerusalem Light Rail

15 October, 2010

After losing billions of dollars worth of contracts, largely due to a concerted international BDS campaign against it in many countries, Veolia is bowing to pressure and trying again to get rid of its heavy financial burden by signing a contract to transfer its shares in the illegal Jerusalem Light Rail (JLR) project to an Israeli company over a five year period (mandated by the initial legal contract with the Israeli government).

During these five years, Veolia will still be complicit in this illegal project, and all the concerted international pressure against it in the Derail Veolia and Alstom BDS campaign must continue until it completely ends its complicity.

BDS works when campaigners make complicit corporations suffer in real profits and growth prospects. Veolia learned the hard way that profiting from Israel’s war crimes (all colonial settlements are regarded as war crimes in international law) is PROHIBITIVELY costly, and not just ethically!

Robert Wyatt & Gilad Atzmon in Haaretz By Yaron Frid

15 OCTOBER, 2010 — Gilad AtzmonHaaretz

Haaretz published today a massive interview with Robert Wyatt and myself. It is a very interesting piece. I may also mention that the Israeli paper didn’t censor me. It let me say it all (Jews, Judaism, Jewishness, Jewish left, Zionism, Israeli collective barbarism etc’)

Haunted by ghosts

Self-proclaimed anti-Israeli saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and prog rock legend Robert Wyatt have joined forces to make musical magic and “political noise”

In 1963 a baby was born in Israel. In 1972 a man fell from the third floor (or the fourth – views are divided ) in England in the middle of the night. Both of them took off on the wings of music, and life would one day organize a surprising encounter between them.

The Ghosts within by Gilad Atzmon

This is a sad story with a jolting soundtrack made of the howl of a saxophone and the wail of a clarinet. It’s a story of displaced persons who have no other country, featuring war criminals, Nazi-hunters and God in a cameo role, tempered by large daubs of irony and a few crumbs of hope.

Universal Jurisdiction: Israeli war criminals not welcome – Take two minutes to send an email to your MP

15 October, 2010 — PSC

Following the successful issuing of an arrest warrant for Tzipi Livni last December for committing war crimes during Operation Cast Lead, the Conservative government made an election pledge to change the law on Universal Jurisdiction.

PSC has set up an easy to use e-tool that allows you to send a model letter to your MP, urging them to sign EDM 108 ‘Human Rights and the Law’ – calling on them to make public their opposition to any change in the law on Universal Jurisdiction. The new proposals adds a political dimension to a legal decision and introduces a source of delay when urgent action may be required to stop a suspected war criminals escape justice.

Email your MP now: http://psc.iparl.com/lobby/51

Follow up your email by arranging a meeting with your MP at their next surgery. You can find your MP’s contact details at: http://findyourmp.parliament.uk/

For more information on Universal Jurisdiction, and why we are calling for ‘no change’ to the law, read the PSC briefing at: http://www.palestinecampaign.org/universal-jurisdiction

Israel Raid on Gaza Flotilla: US Failure to Condemn Despite UN Findings
By Marjorie Cohn
If Iran had attacked a humanitarian flotilla in international waters and killed 9 people, there would be certain retaliation from Washington. Until our government stands up to the powerful Israel lobby in the United States, the Palestinian people, and our own humanity, will continue to be held hostage.

Scientists: Climate change caused Pakistan floods By Rob Crilly

14 October, 2010 — The Scotsman

Monsoon rains have shifted 40-60 miles northwest in the past three decades

(Islamabad) Man-made climate change was a major cause of devastating floods in Pakistan this year, shifting monsoon rains away from flood defences and into areas of the country incapable of dealing with the deluge, according to Pakistani scientists. More than 1,700 people died and millions lost their homes as catastrophic levels of floodwater surged south from mountains in the north-west of the country.

Researchers have pieced together some of the factors responsible, said Azmat Hayat Khan, a scientist at the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and have identified a change in the pattern of monsoon rains, which have shifted 40-60 miles northwest in the past three decades.

‘The negative impact of this shift is that the floods have moved from eastern rivers – where there are four major rivers capable of absorbing these levels of rain – to western rivers, where there are fewer and they are less able to cope with this water,’ he said.

Instead of localised flooding among the meandering rivers of the wide Punjabi flood plains, he said, this year the fast-moving water was able to wreak havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkwa, before heading south to Sindh province where it still sits today.

Mr Khan, who will present his evidence and recommendations for preventing a repeat of this year’s devastating floods at a conference in Islamabad next week, said there was ‘strong evidence’ the shift was caused by global warming.

Industrial activity in Eastern Pakistan had increased surface temperatures, preventing water in the atmosphere falling as rain.

‘Warming in eastern parts has moved the moisture west,’ he said.

Pakistan’s worst natural disaster began with 400m-500mm of rain falling in just three days at the end of July – the amount expected in the whole of an average year. With much of the surrounding mountainsides cleared of trees, water from a vast catchment area poured into valleys, bursting riverbanks and killing most of the victims within those first few days.

It coincided with a second weather system brought from the north by an unusual change to the jet stream.”

14 October 2010 — Viva Palestina

Tfter a tense ten day stand off in Syria, the Viva Palestina aid convoy to Gaza has now been cleared to sail.

The convoy started out from London on Saturday 18th September and drove down through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey before arriving in the port of Latakia, Syria, on Saturday 2nd October. In Latakia, the convoy has been joined by two other convoys. One came from Morocco and Algeria, the other originated in Doha and came through the Gulf states and Jordan.

There are now 147 vehicles about to board two ships together with 380 people from some 30 countries stretching from New Zealand and Australia to Canada and the United States carrying aid worth some 5 million dollars. This includes 40 people who were on the Mavi Marmara flotilla which was attacked by Israeli commandos murdering ten human rights activists from Turkey.

Over the last ten days in Syria, the convoy has taken on medical supplies urgently needed in the besieged Gaza Strip. Simultaneously negotiations have been conducted with the Egyptian authorities to allow passage into the port of Al Arish and then on to the Rafah Crossing. The support of the Syrian authorities and others has been vital in the successful negotiations.

Last night word finally came through that the Egyptian authorities would allow the ships to dock, unload and passage through to the Rafah Crossing and Gaza would be guaranteed.

The ships will now sail past the place where the Mavi Marmara was attacked and flowers will be laid in memory of the victims. When the convoy reaches Gaza the soil from the graves of some of those who were murdered will be used to plant trees as a memorial to the Mavi Marmara victims.

The convoy hopes to reach Gaza this Saturday or Sunday.

Nine Months After the Quake – A Million Haitians Slowly Dying By Bill Quigley

11 October, 2010 — Counterpunch

“If it gets any worse,” said Wilda, a homeless Haitian mother, “we’re not going to survive.” Mothers and grandmothers surrounding her nodded solemnly.

We are in a broiling “tent” with a group of women trying to raise their families in a public park. Around the back of the Haitian National Palace, the park hosts a regal statute of Alexandre Petion in its middle. It is now home to five thousand people displaced by the January 2010 earthquake.

Nine months after the quake, over a million people are still homeless in Haiti.

Settler-style thugs operating inside Israel By Jesse Bacon

15 October, 2010 — The Only Democracy?

One after another, the parallels to fascism pile up in Israel, like the sticks (which is what the root of Fascism means) on a fire. Now a town in Israel has adopted perhaps the most visible feature of many a dictatorship: paramilitary police. The settlers have long functioned in this role in the Occupied Territories, but in the borderless Israeli occupation such methods do not stay contained. What’s more the mission of the militia sounds uncomfortably like the thousands of “sundown towns” of American racism, keep ethnically-defined “outsiders” out of a town with the threat of violence.

Gush Shalom sounds the alarm.

Carmiel Deputy Mayor Oren Milstein, who was elected to the municipal council on the basis of a fiery anti-Arab campaign, candidly revealed the City Guard’s true aims.

Milstein has recently published an interview [in Hebew] in the ultra-right-wing publication “Be’Sheva”, where he said: “Carmiel is a Jewish city, plain and simple. It was founded for the purpose of Judaizing the Galilee. In my opinion it is not proper for Arab families to live here. In recent years, there are attempts by our [Arab] neighbors in the Western Galilee villages to migrate into Carmiel, and we must not ignore this phenomenon.”

According to Milstein, since being appointed deputy mayor two years ago, he had been striving ‘to do something real in order to change the situation’. To this end he founded the City Guard, in cooperation with the Carmiel police. Milstein proudly told the extreme right paper that members of the ‘City Guard’ are ‘monitoring every evening the entrances to the city and demand the I.D. of anyone seeking to enter the city. Thus, they reduce the number of neighbors seeking to just enter the city for no special reason.’”

While unlike Republican congressional candidates, this militia presumably does not wear Nazi uniforms, at what point will Israel’s defenders start to become concerned at what they are sticking up for? Hopefully they already are, and this bed of thugs will lead more to speak out.
