In towns and cities outside Havana, families cook when power returns, charge phones in bursts, and sleep in the heat when fans go dead. Clinics and hospitals ration generator fuel and prioritize the most urgent care. Ambulance crews and ER staff work under conditions where a delayed response means a patient may not make it. Airports face the same reality: When fuel is absent, flights are canceled, routes break, and the island’s connection to needed supplies narrows.

From January 11th – 13th, Lithuania marked the 35th anniversary of the “January Events”. Three tumultuous days in 1991 culminated in a widely-publicised mass shooting of protesters at Vilnius’ TV Tower, with 14 killed and over 140 injured. Soviet forces were purportedly responsible. The bloodshed elicited an avalanche of international sympathy for Lithuania, leading to multiple states recognising the republic as an independent country. It was a pivotal event in the USSR’s breakup, and remains widely celebrated throughout the Baltics and beyond today.

This is an immoral, illegal and ruthless attempt to deal a final death blow to Cuba, following 67 years of relentless US economic sanctions, blockades, sabotage and attempted regime change operations. The intention is to force this island nation to its knees. The question is, will the world allow Cuba, which has become a symbol of human dignity and resistance, refusing against all odds to surrender their inalienable right to self-determination and true independence, to fall. This current embargo threatens the very ability of Cuban society to function and provide vital services to their citizens and in so doing is life threatening. As such, it constitutes a form of genocide.

On February 5th, it was revealed Labour Together, a dubious ‘think tank’ intimately intertwined with the Labour party, paid shady PR firm APCO Worldwide tens of thousands of pounds to spy on journalists. Primary targets were reporters exposing damning information on Labour Together’s finances, and central role in Starmer’s corrupt rise to power. Others were considered “significant persons of interest”, for reasons unclear – including me.
