Wikileaks News roundup 19 December, 2010

19 December 2010

The power of the media!

Ever since the media went OTT over Wikileaks, but more especially Julian Assange, I have been carrying 20, 30 even 40 stories per day. Not so anymore as you can see, even the BBC are no longer covering the issue. Thus Wikileaks is no longer ‘news’.

Pursuing a Just World Order, Crisis for the Left

18 December, 2010 — Left Streamed

Delhi, India — November 11, 2010.

Leo Panitch: “Pursuing a Just World Order, Crisis for the Left”

Part of the Delhi University symposium on “Globalization, Justice and Democracy.”

This one day symposium, which followed the three day International Conference on “The Global Crisis and Hegemonic Dilemmas” (8-10 Nov.2010 in New Delhi), was more oriented to counter-hegemonic strategies for radical social change.
In this talk, Leo Panitch, drawing on his book In and Out of Crisis (with Greg Albo and Sam Gindin), addresses a lack of ambition on the left which has been more debilitating than its lack of capacity in the current global economic crisis, and outlines the kinds of immediate demands for radical reforms as well as longer term socialist strategic orientation that is needed today.

Other presentations in the series:

Also in India – “Global Crisis and Hegemonic Dilemmas” – in ten parts:

Student Protests and the Emerging Discontent of Youth By Oliver Huitson

18 December, 2010 — The Bullet Socialist Project E-Bulletin No. 442 December 18, 2010

The “iPod generation” have long been written off as apathetic, pampered wasters; a collection of illiterate Nathan Barleys draining their parents resources. Yet, from the storming of Tory HQ to campus occupations across the country, it is those same youth now leading public resistance to the Coalition’s cuts. The tripling of tuition fees is unquestionably serious, but it represents only a small part of the problems facing Britain’s young. An increasing awareness of generational imbalances, inflamed by [Chancellor of the Exchequer] George Osborne‘s austerity measures, could see student protests snowball into a wider movement of youth discontent.
