24-12-10 – Demonstration against Political persecution and Oppression in Silwan

24 December, 2010 — Youtube

The armed forces announced their intention to employ against Adnan Gheith, a political and community activist and a resident of Silwan the extreme and draconian mean of restricting him from his community, home, family and livelihood for the duration of four months, due to his participation in the democratic protest against the Jewish settlement enterprise in Silwan.

Since the killing of Silwan resident Samer Sarhan by a security guard of the right-wing association Elad, the Israeli authorities and armed forces have stepped up their campaign of repression in Silwan, employing ever harsher means. The last step taken against Gheith is meant to break down the legitimate and non violent protest taking place in the village against the settlements and house demolitions.

Gheith is a member of the Al-Bustan Neighbourhood Committee, a neighbourhood whose houses the municipality want to demolish in favour of another compound the will serve Jewish settlement in the village. Gheith and his comrades have been leading for the past two years the non violent struggle against these intentions, and put up the protest tent in the neighbourhood. Gheith’s restriction is a warning sign for us all. Residents of Silwan and maybe any resident of East Jerusalem, who dare to speak up against the brutal settlements enterprise, may find themselves arrested or restricted. Last Friday Gheith and his comrades from Silwan joined the vigil in Sheikh Jarrah and invited to join them this Friday in Silwan.

These events come during a week of international solidarity with the Palestinian people as well as the occasion of Christmas. The demonstration, organized by the Popular Committee Against the Wall and settlement of Bil’in, began after Friday prayers from the centre of the village and marched towards the Apartheid Wall where the soldiers were already waiting. Dozens of international activists and Israelis marched alongside the people of Bil’in with a number of protestors dressed in Santa Claus outfits shaking bells and distributing sweets as they marched. Participants chanted slogans calling for national unity and the ending of the occupation, as well as the destruction of the wall. They raised Palestinian flags and banners of the various factions and slogans calling for the liberation and national unity.

On reaching the wall, the protestors were met with a shower of tear gas, sound bombs and rubber bullets. The soldiers advanced towards the village, creating a bottleneck which trapped dozens of participants who were bombarded with the poison gas. The protestors continued confrontation with the Israeli soldiers for hours
