Jews and Arabs must fight Israel’s racism together
Ahmed Tibi, Haaretz, Israeli Occupation Archive12/22/2010
Trends of alienation and despair are evident in Israel’s Arab population, and in this reality it is easy to foster separatism and segregation.
Something evil is occurring in Israeli society. Racism and xenophobia are consuming its enlightenment and tolerance, and democracy is becoming more and more endangered. Phenomena that had been on the sidelines are now moving to the forefront. Blatant racism against Israel’s Arab citizens, and hostility to foreigners in general, phenomena that are usually deeply repressed in the collective soul of people and which enlightened governments are careful to lock in a psychological basement are now being released in a murky thrust. Hatred and fear are being reinforced. This is a frightened and insecure society.
Between the rabbis’ letter, the growing public standing of Avigdor Lieberman, loyalty oaths, incitement against Arab officials and the flood of racist laws, the 18th Knesset is the most racist of all time. To the current parliament’s credit, it’s likely that the next one will be worse.
All of this is not happening in a vacuum. The public space and the social atmosphere have been ripening for this dark attack. The Democracy Index — the flagship project of the Israel Democracy Institute — shows that a majority of the Jewish public supports the stifling of minority voices.
Moshe Arens blamed the collapse of Israeli democracy on Arab Knesset members (Israeli Arab MKs don’t always represent Israeli Arabs, Haaretz, Dec. 14). Thus even a “liberal rightist” like Arens, when he came to analyze the society of which he was a leader for many years and investigate the sources of racism bubbling up in that society, ignored the truly damaging elements and preferred to revert to cheap attacks and incitement against elected representatives of the Arab public. — See also: Source more.. e-mail

Israel’s favorite war song
Ahmed Yousef, Ma’an News Agency12/26/2010
Israeli strategists covet the concept of Islamic fundamentalism. It is a convenient, all-encompassing tag easily applied to any bearded man, veiled woman or critic of Western politics who happens to be Muslim.
The label has deftly been used to paint a poisoned picture of Islamism in Palestine, and distort Hamas’ policies as those of an extreme faction akin to Al-Qaeda or Taliban – a useful reference given the West’s concerted efforts to neutralize those militants.
There is no doubt that Hamas leaders and government officials view their party as a national liberation movement – a political and military one – which draws its inspiration from its religious roots (the only thing it has in common with its Israeli counterparts). And which works to effect freedom through all legitimate means as well as provide civil services to the Palestinian people wherever it operates and any area where circumstances permit.
Throughout almost a quarter century of existence, the movement has functioned on a platform of moderation; and has demonstrated no animosity except where the Israeli occupation is concerned. It has continued a Muslim tradition of respect for the Jewish and Christian faiths as Peoples of the Book, whose beliefs are protected and whose covenants must be respected.
Yet the advent of Zionism, and with it decades of occupation, necessitated measures of self-preservation. Since 1947, Palestinians of every ideology have fought for their freedom, and in recent years the legitimate resistance has intensified. The Israelis, however, need Western funds and grants and, as such, cannot act without offering excuses. more.. e-mail

Israel uses British emergency law to banish activist
Donald Macintyre In Jerusalem, The Independent12/26/2010
Mandate-era regulation invoked to stifle protest against Jewish settler groups in East Jerusalem
The Israeli military is making rare use of an emergency regulation enacted by the British Mandate in 1945 to order the temporary banishment of a Palestinian activist from his home city of Jerusalem.
Adnan Gheith, 35, faces expulsion for four months from the city because of his part in protests at mounting encroachment by Jewish settler groups in the politically ultra-sensitive Silwan neighbourhood of inner-city Arab East Jerusalem.
Silwan is the primary flashpoint in the struggle between the settlers and Palestinians for control of key sectors of East Jerusalem. The moderate Palestinian leadership, under President Mahmoud Abbas, wants this section of the city, which was unilaterally annexed by Israel after the 1967 Six Day War, to become the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Use of the 65-year-old order follows a wave of protests against government-backed plans to demolish at least 22 Palestinian homes to make way for an Israeli-sponsored, biblically inspired tourism park.
The move comes as a confidential new report by senior diplomats from EU states warns that current attempts to “integrate” East Jerusalem into Israel “endanger the chance of a sustainable peace on the basis of two states”. All the EU members, including Britain, regard the annexation of East Jerusalem as illegal.
The Israeli military said that it had been “presented with defence and intelligence information that ties [Mr Gheith] to activities related to public order within the city limits of Jerusalem, such as disturbances in the neighbourhood of Silwan”. — See also: Israeli banishment of Fatah man from Jlem stayed more.. e-mail
