Last night, just before 8pm, Nokuthula Mabaso was assassinated at the eKhenana Commune in Cato Manor, Durban. She was shot six times, four times in the back, and died in the arms of her comrades. She is the second leader in the commune to be assassinated. Ayanda Ngila’s life was taken on 8 March.

Russia should ignore Zelensky and the Finnish biker and let the EU know what its choices are.

Although Satan 11, Russia’s latest super‐heavy RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), packs a lethal punch, it is not of itself a game changer. Because leopards don’t change their spots, NATO won’t stop its war mongering until it is defanged, disarmed and demobbed. Though Satan 11 is necessary to deter NATO’s aggression, it is not nearly sufficient to alter the NATO jingoistic mind set that now has middle aged Swedish and Finnish women clambering to kick start Armageddon.

What’s been occurring in Ukraine throughout the last eight years should be closely studied by communists in the United States, Canada, and the other settler-colonial countries. Because it’s a 21st century example of what happens when oppressed nationalities are pushed to a breaking point by fascist violence, then successfully fight back to win their self-determination. In 2014, faced with a takeover by ultra-nationalists who were unleashing neo-Nazi brutality upon Ukraine, the peoples of the Donbass couldn’t afford to stay part of the country. They were the biggest targets for the persecution, because they were especially made up of ethnic Russians. So they resisted and gained their independence, with the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic having been officially recognized as independent by Russia earlier this year.

Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

Two important reports were released last month, neither getting the kind of attention they deserve. On 4 April, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Working Group III report was published, evoking a strong reaction from the United Nations’ Secretary General António Guterres. The report, he said, ‘is a litany of broken climate promises. It is a file of shame, cataloguing the empty pledges that put us firmly on track towards an unliveable world’. At COP26, the developed countries pledged to spend a modest $100 billion for the Adaptation Fund to assist developing countries adapt to climate change. Meanwhile, on 25 April, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) issued its annual report, finding that the world military spending surpassed $2 trillion in 2021, the first time it has exceeded the $2 trillion mark. The five largest spenders – the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, and Russia – accounted for 62 percent of this amount; the United States, by itself, accounts for 40 percent of total arms expenditure.
