    NHS: Decisions with a cost

    24 June 2020 — The Lowdown

Evidence-based journalism and research on the NHS to create change.

Here are three issues from this week’s Lowdown: A&Es are being closed as a temporary measure, but often in areas where NHS leaders have been trying to permanently close them in the face of strong public objections. (2) How residents in care homes and their carers were left unprotected. (3) Private hospitals are being set up to help with huge NHS waiting lists, but who will benefit and what does the NHS need?

Ten reasons to be concerned about 5G – and it has nothing to do with Covid-19

    24 June 2020 — True Publica

By Annelie Fitzgerald and Tom Imber:

5G has nothing to do with the coronavirus Covid-19 but as you’ll see there is a strong case for supporting legal action against it.

    1. 5G and existing wireless technologies use artificial radio-frequency radiation (RFR) that has adverse effects on health.
    2. 5G has not been safety tested.
    3. 5G is being rolled out under obsolete RFR exposure guidelines.
    4. 5G will introduce more RFR into our environment, with the risk of adverse impacts on flora and fauna.
    5. 5G will increase energy consumption.
    6. 5G will usher in a regime of total surveillance.
    7. 5G will create an insatiable need for rare earth elements and more toxic e-waste.
    8. 5G from space is a tragedy of the cosmic commons.
    9. 5G is being imposed on us with no public debate or informed consent.
    10. We don’t need 5G.
    1. (more…)

    ***

Millions of people have lost their jobs, and their lifelong savings. In developing countries, poverty and despair prevail.

While the lockdown is presented to public opinion as  the sole means to resolving a global public health crisis, its devastating economic and social impacts are casually ignored.

‘Six Months To Avert Climate Crisis’: Climate Breakdown And The Corporate Media

    22 June 2020 — Media Lens

In his classic science fiction novel, ‘Foundation’, Isaac Asimov posited a future in which ‘psychohistorians’ could predict outcomes based on past history and the large-scale behaviour of human populations by combining psychology and the mathematics of probability. Using ‘psychohistory’, the protagonist Hari Seldon discovers that the 12,000-year-old Galactic Empire will collapse in 500 years. He warns the galactic rulers of this likely fate, while explaining that an alternative future in which human knowledge is preserved can be attained. For his trouble, he is exiled to the remote planet of Terminus.

    Commodity Chains and Ecological-Epidemiological-Economic Crises

by John Bellamy Foster and Intan Suwandi

Global logistics concept illustrationImage credit: William B. Cassidy, “Shippers seek stability ahead of patchwork COVID-19 recovery,” Joc.com, May 18, 2020.

John Bellamy Foster is editor of Monthly Review and a professor of sociology at the University of Oregon. He is the author, most recently, of The Robbery of Nature: Capitalism and the Ecological Rift (with Brett Clark) and The Return of Nature: Socialism and Ecology—both published by Monthly Review Press in 2020. Intan Suwandi is an assistant professor of sociology at Illinois State University and author of Value Chains: The New Economic Imperialism (Monthly Review Press, 2019). They thank Fred Magdoff for his invaluable comments.

COVID-19 has accentuated as never before the interlinked ecological, epidemiological, and economic vulnerabilities imposed by capitalism. As the world enters the third decade of the twenty-first century, we are seeing the emergence of catastrophe capitalism as the structural crisis of the system takes on planetary dimensions.

Tory MP: Student nurses ‘not deemed to be providing a service’

TruePublica Editor: This government is a constant source of amazement nowadays. They are now being sued by doctors for not providing PPE, families for the deaths of elderly parents, sons and daughters who have seen front line key workers in mortuaries and for handing out multiple £muti-million contracts to dodgy outfits who have failed to deliver. And this is just their handling of the pandemic. There’s so much more corruption and dodgy dealing going on it’s becoming the new norm. Boris Johson’s government is now immersed in a pool of malfeasance, nepotism and the fraud of taxpayers. It is run by technocrats obsessed with data surveillance, focus groups and public relations. One day, unless it’s too late, they might realise that good governance is what they are paid for.

Amazon Unveils Augmented Reality to Enforce Social Distancing in New Norm for Corporate America

    19 June 2020 — Mint Press

Amazon has started testing on several social distancing technologies following demands for public safety amid COVID-19 and the intrusive changes will likely have a permanent effect on workers’ rights to privacy.

    By Raul Diego

Should you be one of the dozens of people working minimum ten-hour shifts at Amazon’s fulfillment center in Kent, Washington these days, you might very well be at the vanguard of the “new normal” for American blue collar workplaces.

US Senate Initiates Legislation Which Would Categorize Cuba’s Medical Missions as “Human Trafficking Operations”

    19 June 2020 — MintPress News

In an act of pure hypocrisy and obsessive cruelty, GOP Senators Marco Rubio, Rick Scott and Ted Cruz joined together to penalize developing nations who seek to take advantage of Cuba’s hands-on humanitarian work.

    By Raul Diego

In what has already become a parody of a shrinking empire’s habit of clutching at the vestiges of its Cold-War era mistakes, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and fellow war-hungry reactionaries in the United States Senate, Rick Scott (R-FL) and Ted Cruz ((R-TX) have put a bill on the Senate floor meant to undercut Cuba’s medical missions program, which sends trained medics all around the developing world to assist in general healthcare services and emergencies in more than 60 countries.

Why the assault on a diplomat in Israel should come as no surprise

    22 June 2020 — Jonathan Cook

[I immediately broke my own promise but Jonathan Cook writes such good analysis I had to spread the word. WB]

Israel subjugates its Palestinian citizens while being eager to showcase their successes in order to portray itself as a western-style democracy

An Israeli diplomat filed a complaint last week with police after he was pulled to the ground in Jerusalem by four security guards, who knelt on his neck for five minutes as he cried out: “I can’t breathe.”

    Taking a break (not)

22 June 2020 — The New Dark Age

I need to take a break from this, I am totally burned out. I’ve been running this blog for far too many years. This version started in 2003 but earlier versions first started in 1983 and ran until 1992.

This is not to say that I won’t add specific stories if and when they come along but my usual fair of 10-12 stories a day is on hold for awhile, the stress of life is just getting too much for me. On top of this, I’ve got ongoing health issues which this damn virus has made more difficult to deal with (eg NHS meltdown, leading to my doctor’s surgery being closed, leading to shortage of medications, leading to increased stress, leading to my elevated blood pressure!) Not good.

Our Current Dilemmas Go Much Deeper Than Racism

    World Columbian Exposition 4a311

In Russia Today, Helen Buyniski reflects on corporate responses to the depiction of Black people in brand labeling. Buyniski highlights the comments of B and G Foods as it jumped onto the bandwagon of corporate virtue signalling. The company signalled its intentions to “proactively take steps to ensure that we and our brands do not inadvertently contribute to systemic racism.” The company informs consumers that B and G Foods “unequivocally stand against prejudice and injustice of any kind.”

Britain's Last Gasp - Realising Life After Brexit

This week marks four years of political acrimony in the guise of Brexit – the most divisive and toxic ideology to hit Britain since the Second World War. Having reached nothing more than a negotiated stalemate with the EU, the likelihood is that Britain will inextricably tie itself to a form of Atlantasism that will do irreversible harm to the British way of life. This is the ultimate desire of American born Boris Johnson and the shadowy and largely undisclosed free-market fundamentalists that support him. And as each day counts down and the dawn of 2021 approaches many will wonder how Britain ended up sacrificing itself to a dying financial doctrine and become a de facto playground for wealthy foreign asset strippers.

North Korea recently blew up the “inter-Korean liaison office in the western border town of Kaesong,” an act The Wall Street Journal described, and other Western news media saw as, “provocative.” [2]
