Volodymyr Zelensky showed up at the White House, in his best attire, which even President Trump had to note and admire, and decided that it would be the height of diplomacy to get into a verbal fight with both the President and Vice-President of the United States—for those who might not now remember, the US has been the primary funder and sponsor for everything that Zelensky has been doing to his country for the past three years.

Well – just when you thought that things could not get any more dramatic, on Friday 28th February the White House was transformed into a Stage as Donald J used the occasion of Zelensky’s visit to strip the Emperor of his clothes in front of the whole world. I am not sure how much of this was orchestrated but the discussion took on a life of its own, ending in a disagreeable exchange which was not planned in my view.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that his country and the U.S. have reached consensus on a deal to co-set up an “investment fund” for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Ukraine would contribute 50 percent of future proceeds from state-owned mineral resources, oil and gas to the fund, and the fund would then invest in projects in Ukraine itself. However, the deal leaves out crucial security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelensky is set to meet President Donald Trump in Washington this Friday to sign the agreement, which Trump claims could be worth around $1 trillion. So how do all key players regard the deal, including the EU and Russia? And finally, could the deal be one step closer to finally ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict? In his first month back in the White House, US President Donald Trump indicated his interest in annexing Greenland and brokering a peace deal for Ukraine that would include access to Ukrainian minerals and metals. It is important to note that Greenland has already been a point of contention around its vast holdings of rare earth minerals with such remarkable names as dysprosium, neodymium, scandium, and yttrium (there
are seventeen rare earth minerals that are central to any advanced technology). Given that Greenland is part of Denmark, it is therefore beholden to European Union (EU) rules. In 2011, the EU published a list of critical raw materials, which included these rare earth minerals. Then, in 2023, the EU passed the Critical Raw Materials Act, which urged domestic production of these critical minerals and metals and their import into the continent. Ukraine, meanwhile, has an enormous trove of rare earth metals (from apatite to zirconium) as well as reserves of lithium and titanium. Trump demanded at least $500 billion of these reserves from Ukraine as payment for the US’s support in the war. ‘I want to have security of rare earth’, Trump told reporters in early February, sounding like a character from the Lord of the Rings.

Author Yves Engler was released on Monday after spending five days in a Montreal jail.
Engler’s arrest and detention was “a shocking attack on free expression and democratic rights and criticism of Israel in Canada – a country that’s supposed to be a free, democratic society,” according to Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec.

I had the great pleasure of being on Judging Freedom with Judge Napolitano to discuss the end of the American Empire. After decades of pursuing global primacy, the US has exhausted its resources and incentivised other great powers to balance the US collectively. For this exact reason, the US was traditionally an off-shore balancer seeking to avoid a physical presence on the Eurasian continent. There is at least a need to scale back and prioritise focus on the Western Hemisphere and Asia. This implies that Europe will no longer be a priority, which is a key reason why Trump wants to get the US out of Ukraine. After years of subservience, the Europeans are now building up political courage to reduce reliance on the US – although the key motivation is to continue the war in Ukraine. Realistically, there is no NATO without America as the main military power and European pacifier.
