A decade into Syria’s catastrophe as one of the deadliest wars of the 21st century, we can take greater stock of its effects not just on geopolitics and Syria itself, but on imperial management strategies, information warfare, and popular culture, particularly when considering the interventions by the West and its regional allies. A key pillar of Western imperialist projects next to the hard power of bombs and economic sanctions is the soft power of diplomatic maneuvering, media and cultural imperialism, manufacturing public consent for war, and inventing realities to maintain ideological hegemony. The complementary dialectic between hard and soft power in the US led imperial project in Syria built on historical ventures in Muslim majority countries and evolved propaganda and civil society hybrid warfare strategies that may become foundational for 21st century warfare.

Media Fabrications: Libyan Oil Minister Shukri Ghanem Did Not Defect By Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya

From the start of the war on Libya, psychological warfare has been been used by the Obama Administration and their NATO allies. Systematic use of the media and the creation of internal divisions through rumours and fabrications has been part of the Libya PsyOp.

The news about the disappearance of Libyan Oil Minister Shukri Ghanem has exposed the sheer fabrications used by high-ranking officials in NATO countries. Chief amongst them is Hillary Clinton.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has now been caught in an open lie about the topic. She told Katie Couric in an interview for CBC News (May 19, 2011) that ‘The Oil Minister has defected. There is an enormous amount of increased messaging going to Qaddafi, not just because of the military strikes, but from those who he thought were in his camp or at least wouldn’t try to push him to leave.’ (U.S. State Department, May 19, 2011)

Members of Shukri Ganem’s family have confirmed that he did not defect. Shukri is planning to attend the forthcoming meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

He has also been engaged in secretive meetings with foreign oil and gas companies that operate in Libya with a view to renegotiating the energy contracts that they have with Libya:

‘Top Libyan oil official Shokri Ghanem has not defected, contrary to widespread reports, and is secretly working for Col Muammar Gaddafi to maintain ties with big oil companies, sources at western firms said.

A Libyan opposition source and a source at a major international oil company said Ghanem, one of the most senior figures in Gaddafi’s government, had invited representatives of oil companies to meet him last week in Tunisia, to discuss oil contracts.

‘There were some invitations or advances but we did not accept,’ said the source at a western oil company. ‘He was holding court in some form’. (Reuters, May 24, 2011)

The secretive US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has awarded arms globocorp General Dynamics a $10m contract to set up a network of psychological-warfare “influence websites” supporting the Global War On Terror. France and Britain are specifically included as “targeted regions”.

SOCOM is principally famous for its large contingents of elite, secret operatives from all four US armed services (Navy SEALs, Green Berets, Delta Force, Team-6/DevGru, “the Activity” etc etc). What’s less well-known about the organisation is that it also includes the US forces’ active psychological-warfare apparatus. According (pdf) to the 4th Airborne Psychological Operations Group – the only full-time psywar unit in the US Army, and part of SOCOM:

PSYOP is the dissemination of truthful information to foreign audiences in support of US policy… these activities are not forms of force, but are force multipliers that use nonviolent means in often violent environments… they rely on logic, fear, desire or other mental factors… The ultimate objective of US military psychological operations is to convince enemy, neutral, and friendly nations and forces to take action favorable to the United States…

Their purpose can range from gaining support for US operations to preparing the battlefield for combat.

One of the definitions of the word “occupation” is: the action, state, or period of occupying or being occupied by military force. Throughout history, areas or countries occupied by military force have always resisted, and this resistance has caused the occupier to devise more suitable methods of subduing the population of the area being occupied.

The US military has sent shock troops, which also donned helmets and flak jackets – anthropologists, sociologists and social psychologists, with their own troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. By the end of 2007, American scholars in these fields were embedding with the military in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of a Pentagon program called Human Terrain System (HTS), which evolved shortly thereafter into a $40 million program that embedded four or five person groups of scholars in the aforementioned fields in all 26 US combat brigades that were busily occupying Iraq and Afghanistan.
