As David Cameron resurfaces 'Broken Britain' disintegrates
By TruePublica: David Cameron has no shame whatsoever. He has, cynically, come out of hiding – simply to promote his new book and make some money from an ongoing catastrophe of his making. For the last three years he hid from the political landscape he set fire to and finally pops up to say that he has ‘no regrets’. He even tried to shift the blame in an interview to publicise his book, where, according to him, Boris Johnson told him the Brexit campaign would be “crushed” during the referendum campaign. As if anyone took notice of Johnson in 2015, least of all David Cameron – a man who took no notice of senior civil servants or even the security services. But there’s more to come from his legacy of breaking Britain.

Britain: lessons of the European elections – general election the only way forward By Rob Sewell

28 May 2019 — In Defence of Marxism

[Not a bad analysis except for its ambivalence over the role of the Labour Party in Labour’s debacle in the Euro elections but you be judge. WB]

As expected, the European elections saw a huge victory for the Brexit Party, which took 32 percent of the vote in Britain. This clearly reflects the frustrations of many people about the paralysis in Parliament and the failure of politicians to agree on a path for Britain’s departure from the EU.

Britain: Theresa May resignation – let’s kick out the rest of the Tories! By Adam Booth

24 May 2019 — In Defence of Marxism

[This is quite a good summation of the mess the British ruling class have got themselves into over the Brexit BS as it exposes the undercurrent of reaction at the heart of British capitalism. WB]

After three years of can kicking, Theresa May has finally run out of road. Giving a teary-eyed speech in front of Number 10 this morning, the Prime Minister announced that she would step down on 7 June. The race to succeed her will begin the following week. Then the fireworks will really begin.

UK Government Collusion with Israel By Hans Stehling

2 March 2019 — Global Research

According to a 2009 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, 50% of the then Conservative shadow cabinet were members of the CFI Friends of Israel lobby – (but now, that figure has risen to an estimated 80%).  The film also claimed that the pro-Israel lobby group were bankrolling the Tory party.  That was nearly ten years ago.  In the interim period the lobby has massively increased its influence within a Conservative party that has been in government during that period and the knowledge of that unsavoury relationship is a key driver of animosity against those in government and those in the general population who support this dangerous infiltration of foreign agents into both Houses of Parliament. Brexit: Corbyn’s Cakeism; Norway Rejects “Norway”

7 December 2018 — Naked Capitalism

Due to competing duties, we’ll be brief on Brexit today. The newspapers are consumed with whether Theresa May will be forced to put off the vote on her Brexit deal due to the likely margin of rejection being so high as to make her continuation as Prime Minister untenable. I doubt the mechanism for an exit next week (if her bill is rejected roundly as anticipated) would be a vote of no confidence; the DUP said it would support May if her bill failed and the Tories are highly unlikely to run the risk of a general election, although the “no confidence” timetable allows 14 calendar days to find a new PM. Even the fabulously stubborn May might accept her ministers telling her she had to resign if she lost by a 100 vote margin.

BREXIT – Finally Laid Bare For All To See By Graham Vanbergen

17 November 2018 — True Publica
BREXIT - The Final TruthThe dream of Brexit, that of the so-called ‘ultras,’ the buccaneering Brexiteers is finally being laid bare for what it really is – a fantasy. The tally of Theresa May’s appointments who have walked out has now reached 18. The record-setting turnover rate in Theresa may’s government is only trumped in the democratic West by the master of chaos himself – Donald Trump, who to date, has lost 68 members of his Executive office staff – including the Whitehouse physician. And this is the man the ‘ultras’ are courting.

Brexit deal threatens survival of May government By Robert Stevens

16 November 2018 — WSWS

The draft agreement struck between the European Union (EU) and Prime Minister Theresa May’s negotiating team has been denounced on all sides. May’s fate depends most immediately on the size of a rebellion by the hard-Brexit wing of her party. But based on anything other than the most optimistic assessment, there is little likelihood of her proposal passing in parliament—threatening her future and that of the Conservative government.

Economist magazine calls for soldier MPs to lead UK By Julie Hyland

18 September 2018 — WSWS

The Bagehot notebook in the Economist has urged the rise of a “new generation of soldier-statesman” as “politicians steeled in war are well placed to unite a divided country.”

The Economist was founded in 1843 to agitate for the repeal of the Corn Laws (import tariffs) and was described by Karl Marx as the “aristocracy of finance.” Its column is named after Walter Bagehot, editor of the Economist between 1861-1877, banker, journalist and British constitutional expert and is written in Bagehot’s name. Currently authored by Adrian Wooldridge, it is considered a must read on British politics.

Lost in a Brexit Maze: a Baffled Political Class Dreads the Prospect of Jeremy Corbyn By Alexander MERCOURIS

1 August 2018 — Strategic Culture Foundation

Donald Trump’s recent trip to Britain – happening against the backdrop of the sweltering heat of an unusually protracted summer heatwave – took place at a time when Britain’s political system is closer to breakdown than at any time in my memory.

The immediate crisis centres on a Brexit plan which British Prime Minister Theresa May unveiled to her top ministers at a closed meeting at Chequers (the British Prime Minister’s official country residence) earlier this month.

Brexit crisis intensifies as “Remain” Tories reject bogus compromise on parliament having “meaningful vote” By Chris Marsden

15 June 2018 — WSWS

A supposed “ compromise ” amendment to the European Union Withdrawal Bill proposed by the Conservative government of Prime Minister Theresa May to head off a potential rebellion by around 15 pro-Remain Tory MPs unravelled yesterday.

May is beholden to her hard-Brexit wing, led by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson , and Jacob-Rees Mogg. But even a small rebellion by Remain Tories would endanger her minority government reliant on the votes of 10 Democratic Unionist Party MPs. Therefore, the first day of voting on Tuesday concerning 15 amendments to the Withdrawal Bill by the House of Lords centred on the most potentially damaging—agreeing that parliament must have a “ meaningful vote ” on any Brexit deal concluded.

‘Inappropriate Behaviour’ – Michael Fallon, Yemen, And The ‘Mainstream’ That Is Anything But

10 November 2017 — Media Lens

The truth of corporate journalism, and the great irony of its obsession with ‘fake news’, is that it is itself utterly fake. What could be more obviously fake than the idea that Truth can be sold by billionaire-owned media dependent on billionaire-owned advertisers for maximised profit?

MAYfly, Brexit, the Economy and the SWP

12 June 2017 — theplanningmotivedotcom

Theresa May claimed that she called the election having been inspired to do so while on a walk. This fairy tale, like the election, lies in ruins. As the Tory hierarchy fall out and individuals try to duck blame, the ugly truth is dribbling out of fiery arguments between those who saw the advantages of an election and those who saw the risks. Even key EU officials were consulted over the wisdom of this act. The fairy tale of the inspiring walk and the leader’s idea was conjured up to prepare a presidential style campaign that backfired so spectacularly.

Britain Faces the Biggest Crisis of Democracy in its History By Nafeez Ahmed

17 July 2016 — The Canary

It’s Time To Take Power Back

Welcome to prime minister Theresa May’s new regime: it represents perhaps the most authoritarian, racist and austerity-obsessed government in British history.

Britain is now being run by an unelected leader presiding over a draconian surveillance-state, hell-bent on accelerating war on the poor and vulnerable, at home and abroad. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the official opposition to this regime is falling apart.

The fight to reclaim our democracy must be ramped up. Now.

The Tory chickens come home to roost By William Bowles

24 June 2016

Ask yourself this: Why has immigration been made the pole around which, this entire referendum ‘debate’, has revolved? Why has the closet Nazi Nigel Farage of UKIP been given so much airtime?

Could it be the masses, hammering at the doors of Fortress Europe after we, that is the US-EU-NATO axis of pure barbarism, destroyed their countries, have something to do with it?

Media Lens: Unfree Elections – The Corporate Media, UK General Election And Predictable Outcomes

12 May 2015 — Media Lens

The famous physicist Albert Einstein was fond of Gedankenexperimenten – thought experiments – which tested his understanding of physics problems and stimulated solutions to them. For example, when he was a teenager, Einstein asked himself, ‘What would the world look like if I rode on a beam of light?’ Pursuing this question, he eventually came up with the Special Theory of Relativity and the most famous equation in science, E=mc2.
