The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) reports that, every minute, a child is pushed into hunger in fifteen countries most ravaged by the global food crisis. Twelve of these fifteen countries are in Africa (from Burkina Faso to Sudan), one is in the Caribbean (Haiti), and two are in Asia (Afghanistan and Yemen). Wars without end have degraded the ability of the state institutions in these countries to manage cascading crises of debt and unemployment, inflation and poverty. Joining the two Asian countries are the states that make up the Sahel region of Africa (especially Mali and Niger), where the levels of hunger are now almost out of control. As if the situation were not sufficiently dire, an earthquake struck Afghanistan last week, killing over a thousand people – yet another devastating blow to a society where 93% of the population has slipped into hunger.

Two years ago, when the Abraham Accords were signed and Donald Trump hailed them as a truly historic moment, there were very few who believed anything substantial could come out of them. Even a US intelligence report of the Department of Homeland Security warned that these pacts could lead to an increase in terrorism. But this has been far from the case. As it stands today, the Biden administration has revamped enthusiasm for a sort of Abraham Accords 2.0., which would extend the Arab-Israel normalisation to Saudi Arabia, the most powerful state in the Arab world.
The west is nostalgically caught up with outdated ‘containment’ policies, this time against Global South integration. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the world is moving on, together.

The Russian Federation just came out with a new imperative entitled “Destroying America: A Moral Imperative.” Okay, not really. But the United States has come out with exactly this strategy for “dealing with” Russia. Only the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) version is titled “Decolonizing Russia.” Apparently, the plan is not to utterly destroy the world’s biggest country, it’s just a strategy to break it up into manageable pieces.
