Conflict in Ukraine is doomed to escalate

Defining moment in the Battle of Donbass, as the 4-month long defiant Ukrainian resistance to the Russian offensive is ending

The meet-up location of NATO foreign ministers on November 29-30— Bucharest — was where ten years ago, former US President George W. Bush persuaded America’s transatlantic partners that Ukraine and Georgia should one day join their military alliance. The foreign ministers duly “reaffirmed” that decision yesterday and left it at that.

The Injection Rejection

20 November 2022 — HART

People turning down vaccination

In numerous countries, despite vaccination remaining available, people are no longer cooperating with the programme. There has been no official end to the programme but people have opted out. The government has not told them to stop, the media have not told them to stop. Somehow, people have made a conscious or, perhaps for many a subconscious decision to decline.

Of Facts, Finances and Forays

Wednesday, 30 November 2022 — The van says…

The world has seen Von der Leyen’s words, and for all of Brussels’ efforts nobody can either unsee the words or fail to understand the ramifications they have for both Brussels or Kiev in the future.

Preamble

In spite of repeated claims by Kiev that the losses suffered by Ukrainian forces are considerably lower, we saw yesterday Ursula Von der Leyen stating that the number of killed is now over one hundred thousand. This article will examine the implications of the EU President’s statement along with other related matters concerning the region.

NHS cites a computer-modelling study to justify ongoing mask requirements

20 November 2022 — HART

The spectre of Ferguson lives on

In a sane world, the legitimacy of using computer modelling as a rationale for imposing covid restrictions would be seriously questioned. In 2020, Professor Neil Ferguson (an epidemiologist at Imperial College London) gained notoriety for his doomsday prediction that 2.2 million Americans and 500,000 British people could die as a direct consequence of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus. These wildly inaccurate prophesies were largely responsible for spooking governments into imposing ineffective and hugely damaging lockdowns and, subsequently, the modelling methodology was heavily criticised. Yet it has recently been revealed that NHS England are relying on this flawed approach to justify their mask requirements in healthcare settings.

Novo-Ogaryovo, Moscow Region, November 25, 2022

Wading through the 18,000-word transcript of an hours-long meeting that President Vladimir Putin took with the “soldiers’ mothers” last Friday in Moscow, one gets the impression that the fighting in Ukraine may continue well into 2023 — and even beyond.

Xi vs Trudeau: How China is Rewriting History with the Colonial West

Though brief, the exchange between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia on November 16 has become a social media sensation. Xi, assertive if not domineering, lectured the visibly apprehensive Trudeau about the etiquette of diplomacy. This exchange can be considered another watershed moment in China’s relationship with the West.

Ukraine War – A Contentious Graveyard In Poland

Monday, 28 November 2022 — Moon of Alabama

An independent Polish news site, Niezaleizny Dziennik Polityczny, has an interesting piece about Polish losses in the war in Ukraine.

I can not confirm the reports veracity but since at least 2014 the site has regularly published several news and opinion pieces per day. It seems to be opposed to the current conservative PiS led government in Poland.

Ukraine: The Russian Winter Offensive

Friday, 25 November 2022 — Internationalist 360°

The only way Ukrainians will see anything approximating a holiday season is if a ceasefire can be arranged by New Year’s Day, and it just might happen, regardless of President Volodomyr Zelenskiy’s repeated assertions that there will be no negotiations with Russia until it withdraws all its troops from all occupied territories, including Crimea. There are several reasons for the possible ceasefire.

Is there an Offramp in the Offing?

Friday, 25 November 2022 — The van says…

Von der Leyen and Zelenskiy might see eye to eye, yet with European fortunes looking bleak, other European politicians may be again be viewing ties with Russia.

Preamble

The last six months have presented Western leaders with first the opportunity to wave a big stick at Moscow, then realize that the Russian Bear is a good deal less frightened of the stick than those economies that need Moscow’s materials. This article will look at certain events over the last month that may indicate that at least a few Western leaders are getting cold feet concerning the economic Cold War they were so enthusiastic to start.
