GM Watch Daily Digest 28 April 2025
Monday, 28 April 2025 — GM Watch
GM crops fuel rise in pesticide use despite early promises: study
In April 2025, a new study rebutted claims that GM crops cut chemical use. Published in the Journal of Agrarian Change, the research found that GM crops have deepened agriculture’s dependency on pesticides rather than reducing it. Drawing on data from four GM crops — Bt cotton, herbicide-tolerant (HT) soybean, HT and/or Bt maize, and HT rapeseed — the researchers traced the surge in chemical use over three decades. They found as GM seeds were adopted, pesticide use soared. What began as a cost-saving solution turned into a cycle of higher expenses and increased pesticide use. Ground Report (India)

What Correctly Defines Pan-Africanism in 2025 and Beyond
Thursday, 17 April 2025 — Hood Communist

Since its initial organizational expression in 1900, the phrase Pan-Africanism has been expressed in many different forms. For some, its current meaning is defined as unity between all people of African descent across the world. For others, Pan-Africanism is an ideology defined by nebulous elements of the type of unity previously described. For still many others, Pan-Africanism is represented by social media famous individuals who claim Pan-Africanism as a set of beliefs without any clear defining criteria.

The Ghost in the Machine. Artificial Intelligence and the Spectral Ontology of Value
Sunday, 27, 2025 — Laura Ruggeri’s Substack

Last February, I publicly questioned the existence of Jianwei Xun, an author who published a best-selling, critically acclaimed book titled Hypnocracy: Trump, Musk and the New Architecture of Reality. On his website and on academia.org — the original version of his profile can now be found only on Internet Archive — he claimed to be a Hong Kong-born media philosopher, a Research Fellow at the Institute for Critical Digital Studies in Berlin who had studied political philosophy and media at Dublin University.

At the Lost and Found
11 April 2025 — Edward Curtin

The following is the Introduction to my new book, At the Lost and Found (Clarity Press).
My dear mother, who had an artistic temperament that tended at times toward the sentimental, liked to call me a contrarian. She was right. I think she liked but feared this inclination of mine that started in childhood. It no doubt has many roots, some of which an artful reader may sense in the essays in this book, for while I have written about the lies and coverups of the ruling elites, I have tried to do so in a self-revelatory way, even in the writing where it is couched in pure artifice.

The past returns to haunt us…
Sunday, 27 April 2025 — Dot Commie
with a vengeance.
By William Bowles
Like a really bad meal and you think, I’m not going to that restaurant again. Yet here we are, eating the same, poisonous food and the same horrific consequences play out all over again. And in an irony of ironies, the victims of the past, return as the persecutors of the present. So I could say, surely, we saw this coming didn’t we? When Israel was created in 1948 on the stolen land of Palestine, Western, racist colonialism drove the entire enterprise and that’s why, we, in the West, never recognised it for what it was. We were too busy doing phony mea culpas for German Fascism–at least that’s how it seemed at the time–to recognise that the racism that played such a central role in the slaughter of WWII, is the same racism that drove the creation of Israel and drives the slaughter of Palestinians. It explains why white, European capitalism, applauds, encourages, finances and arms the Zionist monster, itself a creation of 19th century European imperialism. So really, nothing has changed, not a damn thing!

Collateral Damage or Calculated Strategy? The EU Feels the Heat from America’s Yemen Military Operation!
Saturday, 26 April 2025 — New Eastern Outlook
One must stop and ask that if the US was aware that its operations in Yemen would have such limited results, why would it undertake such a risky and expensive operation in the first place?
It is more involved than just opening up the straits of the Red Sea for international shipping, especially for the benefit of Israel or the United States.

We are the resistance
Saturday, 26 April 2025 — MROnline – Left Berlin
by Anna Southern (more by The Left Berlin)On 16th April 2025, five crusty old judges in the UK Supreme Court decided what a woman is (in the context of the Equality Act 2010). Hard luck, fellow women, it seems that our biology is our destiny. The Supreme Court ruled that the definition of a woman is based on ‘biological sex’ (an unclear term in itself) and therefore excludes trans women. How bloody depressing. The court didn’t hear from a single trans person during its deliberations. The case was brought by an organisation called For Women Scotland, a self-described ‘gender critical’ group, against the Scottish government. Their success is a boost for bigots and the far-right and will do nothing to help protect the rights of women.

Israel Is Using Suicide Drones to Target Displaced Palestinian Families Sheltering in Tents
Thursday, 24 April 2025 — Drop Site

Israel has deployed SkyStriker drones manufactured by Elbit Systems in several attacks in Gaza over the past week, killing at least 30 Palestinians sheltering in tents, including 14 childrenStory by Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Mohnad Qeshta & Hamza Salha
MAWASI KHAN YOUNIS & JABALIYA—The Israeli military is using so-called suicide drones—highly precise attack drones—in strikes on displacement camps in Gaza that have killed at least 30 Palestinians, including 14 children, according to photos, videos, and eyewitness testimony obtained by Drop Site News.
In at least five separate strikes over the past week, including one in Jabaliya refugee camp, one in Beit Lahia, and three on families sheltering in Mawasi Khan Younis, Israel deployed attack drones called SkyStrikers, which are manufactured by Elbit Systems, the largest private defense contractor in Israel. Mawasi Khan Younis is designated as a “humanitarian zone” that the Israeli military has ordered Palestinians in Gaza to displace to yet has nevertheless repeatedly bombed. Photos and video of the drones’ remnants were reviewed and identified by Trevor Ball, a munitions researcher and a former U.S. army explosive ordnance disposal specialist.

Two Hundred Years Ago, France Strangled the Haitian Revolution with an Inhumane Debt: The Seventeenth Newsletter (2025)
Thursday, 24 April 2025 — The Tricontinental

Jean-Claude Sévère (Haiti), L’ennemi attaqué chacun de sa propre volonté se tient debout pour défendre sa patrie (When the Enemy Attacks, Everyone Stands up of Their Own Free Will to Defend Their Homeland), 1970.
Dear Friends,
Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.
On a stormy August night in 1791, Dutty Boukman (1767–1791) and Cécile Fatiman (1771–1883) conducted a Vodou ceremony at Bois Caïman in northern Saint-Domingue, in the French-owned part of Hispaniola. Boukman was captured in Senegambia (now Senegal and The Gambia), and Fatiman was the daughter of a woman from the Congo (as Aimé Césaire wrote) and a man from Corsica. Their ceremony amidst over two hundred enslaved Africans was the catalyst for a mass uprising across the French plantations. Boukman, in Kreyòl, spoke words that were passed down through memory for generations and eventually entered the history books (including C. L. R. James’s 1938 classic The Black Jacobins):

The reason invoked for his detention by armed air port security was the Firearms Act. One of the officers present stated that due to the conflict tensions are high and a complaint had been received. The man was simply wearing a shirt, which should be his right protected under free speech.

WHO IS WINNING THE TARIFF WAR, CHINA OR THE USA?
Wednesday, 23 April 2025 — The Planning Motive
There is beginning to be sufficient evidence to draw tentative estimates of who is winning the war. This article examines the initial results. The real difficulty lies with Trump himself because he changes his positions virtually daily making commenting on developments awkward.
Let’s begin with posing the question, what would a level headed and rational President have done to reverse the deindustrialization of the US economy. Firstly, such a President would have been patient recognizing it could not be done overnight. Secondly, that it needed to be targeted, bit by bit, particularly key industrial inputs. Thirdly, that before any tariffs are introduced there would have to be support for the targeted industry to bring down its operating costs. Fourthly the physical infrastructure would need to be improved to reduce cost prices. Fifthly there would need to be an improvement in the human infrastructure through improving education and training. Sixthly, the Whitehouse, Congress and the FED would have to work closely to ensure money remained cheap. Finally, a recognition that tax increases would be needed to fund an industrial policy, to reduce the deficit and keep a lid on interest rates. Only then could tariffs be applied step by step.
