The ruling Jubilee coalition insists repeat presidential elections must go on next Thursday. The opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) has called for a boycott and nationwide protests on that date. Unless the election is called off now, and efforts made to cool off tempers, Kenya could implode.

Obama in South Africa: Washington tells Pretoria how to ‘play the game’ in Africa By Patrick Bond

1 July, 2013 – Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal

US President Barack Barack Obama’s weekend trip to South Africa may have the desired effect of slowing the geopolitical realignment of Pretoria to the Brazil-India-Russia-China-South Africa (BRICS) axis. That shift to BRICS has not, however, meant deviation from the hosts’ political philosophy, best understood as “talk left, walk right” since it mixes anti-imperialist rhetoric with pro-corporate policies. A Black Agenda Radio commentary by executive editor Glen Ford

Humanitarian Coverup: Why is Obama Silent Over the New Congo War? By Shamus Cooke

26 November, 2012Global Research

[Comment: Why indeed? Sometimes I really get pissed off with the left, or is Shamus’ title merely rhetorical? I come across this constantly from the left as it’s obvious why Obama is silent on everything except pushing the imperial agenda. The article itself is pretty much on the money, I’m not objecting to it per se: it’s all about money and resources as usual, so why not say that in the title rather than assuming something about Obama‘s intentions as if there’s some other reason why he’s silent? “Obama seems not to have noticed”? Come on Shamus, I know you ‘mean well’ but the road to hell is paved with good intentions! Ah well… read on… WB]

Victory! – for the Non-Resistance

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

The More Effective Evil has trounced those Republicans with evil intentions. Folks who never made a single demand of the corporate, war mongering Democrat think they are some kind of victors. “The non-resisters have won a non-victory against an unimpressive enemy,” while Obama plots new atrocities.

Melissa Harris-Perry VS Alice Walker: Sista Courtier VS the Real Sista Citizen

By BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

Professor Melissa Harris-Perry has an MSNBC show and a byline in The Nation as “Sister Citizen.” But what would the output of a “sista citizen” look like? Would it extol and praise the Great Man, excusing him from responsibilities and his own promises, or would it ask him, and the rest of us hard questions? What’s the difference between a citizen and a cheerleader?

Kony 2012 and the promotion of “humanitarian” wars By Andre Damon

22 March 2012WSWS.ORG

Kony 2012, the 30-minute propaganda video advocating US military intervention in Africa, has become something of a debacle for its creators and media supporters. Millions of people have read and viewed responses debunking the film’s assertions, and some of its early cheerleaders have felt obliged to backpedal and adopt a critical attitude toward it. Social Media Scam Alert: Top Ten Ways to Tell Kony is Phony

14 March 2012Black Agenda Report

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

A week ago Invisible Children released a video that was immediately picked up and promoted by every corporate news and entertainment outlet till it went “viral”.  Kony 2012 allegedly “promotes awareness” of and contributes to the end of child soldiering in Africa.  But is that really what it’s about?  Is it, like the old Save Darfur war dance, another propaganda campaign to justify US intervention in Africa?

Why the attempted remilitarisation of Africa will fail By Horace Campbell

11 November 2011 — PambazukaWhy the attempted remilitarisation of Africa will fail

Lessons from the deployment of Kenyan troops into Somalia

Kenya’s foray into Somalia, led from behind by US Africa Command (AFRICOM), ‘represents a heightened threat to peace and reconstruction in Africa, especially East Africa’, argues Horace Campbell. AFRICOM’s attempts at remilitarisation will not solve Africa’s problems, says Campbell, when ‘the root cause’ of the ‘threats to stability and security challenges’ across the continent is ‘the exploitation and plunder’ of its resources.
