Photo Essay: Profit and Violence in the Name of Comprehensive Immigration Reform By Todd Miller

17 April 2013 — NACLA Border Wars

On April 16, the U.S. Senate’s so-called “Gang of 8” released their 844-page plan for comprehensive immigration reform entitled the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. The border policing aspect of the bill (among many other things) envisions $3 billion for more surveillance systems, including unmanned aerial drones, $1.5 billion for more barriers on the boundary, and the addition of 3,500 more Customs and Border Protection agents (CBP includes the U.S. Border Patrol). This would be on top of the $18 billion (figure from 2012) that the U.S. government already spends on border and immigration enforcement per year, an expense that is more than all other federal law enforcement agencies combined.

UK Reporting on Venezuela Continues to be Clouded by Partiality

21 December 2012 — News Unspun

As Hugo Chávez receives further cancer treatment in Cuba, this time seemingly with much higher stakes than before, the UK media has again shown where its interests lie when it comes to reporting on left-wing Latin American governments. The attack has come in many forms, from portraying once again the country as militaristic, to demonising Nicolas Maduro, the vice-president of Venezuela, who will stand for election in the event that Hugo Chávez cannot continue as president.

16 December 2011 — The David Kelly Inquest Fund

At long last a step closer to a coroner’s inquest into the death of Dr. David Kelly. This would be the first time a court would hear the medical anomalies that led many to conclude that Dr Kelly did not commit suicide. Will the lid on the government cover-up about the case and this pandora’s box be lifted?

Mass Protest in Spain: No Vote for Traditional Parties! By junge Welt

16 May 2011 — MRZine

Madrid.  Tens of thousands of people, especially youth, demonstrated again on Tuesday evening in the Spanish capital of Madrid, against the political and economic system of the country, which they called corrupt.  The participants in the rally at the central Puerta del Sol square shouted slogans such as “Less Policing, More Education” and “They Call It Democracy, But It Isn’t.” With this demonstration, held just a few days before the municipal elections on Sunday, the participants responded to the brutal eviction of a vigil from the central square at the beginning of this week.  Already on Sunday, thousands had demonstrated in some 50 cities across the country against the Spanish political system, calling on the electorate not to give their votes to any of the traditional parties.  The protest is directed against the massive cuts in social services made by the Spanish government and against the huge mass unemployment which affects nearly one-half of young people.
