During the coronavirus pandemic, the well-known manipulation and censorship on major US internet platforms Google/YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Wikipedia has reached unprecedented levels. The platforms generally claim to enforce WHO and ‘local health authority’ guidelines, not because they are correct – they were mostly wrong – but because they are deemed “authoritative”.

On Tuesday, 4 May, 100 people attended a meeting co-hosted by Migrants OrganiseAsylum MattersLeeds Anti-Raids Action and the Institute of Race Relations, on responding to the government’s public consultation on its ‘New Plan for Immigration’. The week before, on Friday, 30 April, a public statement from 193 human rights groups, refugee, faith and legal organisations was published condemning the consultation as a sham, and on the same day, 76 charities and community groups in Scotland wrote to Boris Johnson condemning the proposals as contrary to international refugee law.

Kerala, a state in the Indian union with a population of 35 million, has re-elected the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to lead the government for another five years. Since 1980, the people of Kerala have voted out the incumbent, seeking to alternate between the Left and the Right. This year, the people decided to stay with the Left and give the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Pinarayi Vijayan, a second term in office as the Chief Minister. Health Minister K. K. Shailaja, popularly known as Shailaja Teacher, won her re-election with a record-breaking tally of over 60,000 votes, far exceeding her closest contender.

In his first speech to a joint session of Congress on April 28, Joe Biden made the calculation that he needed to directly address the needs of the working class. “20 million Americans lost their jobs in the pandemic – working- and middle-class Americans. At the same time, the roughly 650 billionaires in America saw their net worth increase by more than $1 trillion,” Biden noted, “[T]rickle-down economics has never worked. It’s time to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle-out”. Biden went on to highlight several specific reforms he supported that would have far-reaching implications for the lives of countless millions of working people.
