Intensive Fishing and the Birth of Capitalism, Part 2

    8 March 2021 — Origin: Climate & Capitalism

    Plundering a New Found Land

While treasure fleets carried silver to Spain, far more ships were carrying men, fish and whale oil across the North Atlantic.

Part One discussed the development of fish as a mass food commodity, and the Dutch use of factory ships in the North Sea in the 16th Century.  Part Two looks at the rise of an even bigger capitalist fishery on the other side of the Atlantic.

“In the sixteenth and partly still in the seventeenth, the sudden expansion of trade and the creation of a new world market had an overwhelming influence on the defeat of the old mode of production and the rise of the capitalist mode.” — Karl Marx[1]

Govt-Linked CSIS Urges DC To Partner with Social Media Firms To “Promote Protests Movements”

    8 March, 2021 — Mint Press News

Widespread protests were a feature of 2020, engulfing 68 nations. However, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a pro-regime-change think tank based in DC, is most preoccupied with those in China and Russia.

    By  Alan Macleod

WASHINGTON D.C. — A new report from Washington D.C.-based think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) concludes that the U.S. government should work closely with social media companies to ensure that protest movements around the world result in an outcome more conducive to American interests. Along with intern Riley McCabe, the organization’s senior fellow, Samuel Brannen, argued that the White House, State Department, and intelligence community must explore deeper coordination with major tech companies that provide global media platforms:

    4 March 2021 — FAIR

Twitter: Substack is a dangerous direct threat to traditional news media. But more importantly? It is a threat to journalism. The beginning of Sarah Roberts’ critique of Substack (Twitter, 2/28/21)

A debate rages in the media world about the trend of writers with substantial online followings moving away from writing for traditional publications and simply going to the website Substack, where writers sell content directly to their readers, untethered from any editorial constraint. (It’s like a less titillating version of OnlyFans.) Substack has a number of investors, including the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

Labour time is the visible hand guiding production and consumption

A tribute to the International Communists 1930s Theses

This article reviews the thesis presented by the Group of International Communists, titled the “Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution”. It was written in 1930, when Stalin, donning the mantle of the Russian Revolution and having anointed himself as chief revolutionary, was crushing debate within the European left and disorientating the movement to honour his informal pact with imperialism. This is a valuable document. One of the few oppositional documents of its time, and one that needs a current airing.

    By Simon Elmer

‘For whether or not the age of revolutions is over, the age of state-formation has only just begun.’ — T. J. Clark, Farwell to an Idea, 1999

We are approaching the first anniversary of the coronavirus crisis in the UK, and more and more people — on the Twitter account of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, in the Facebook pages set up to share censored interviews with scientists, in the online platforms not yet shut down for discussing the evidence against lockdown, in the illegal meetings of friends in the homes of the people that host them, in the thousands of discussions and exchanges that happen at every act of resistance, every demonstration, every march — know that this crisis has been manufactured. We know now that Government strategies for responding to a viral epidemic that had been in place for years were abandoned in favour of the historically unprecedented policy of national lockdown.

The world has been fixated for months on novel-coronavirus PCR testing, contact tracing and vaccination.

Meanwhile, another major part of the Covid biomedical complex has received far less attention: the use of antibodies for detecting, diagnosing and treating infection with the novel coronavirus.

US Continues Crusade Against Nord Stream 2

    6 March, 2021 — — Origin: New Eastern Outlook

(Brian Berletic – NEO) – Despite the partisan political theater taking place in Washington – in terms of foreign policy – virtually nothing has changed with a new US president taking office. Even the rhetoric of the new administration is hardly discernible from that of its predecessor.

From US tensions with China and Iran to continued pressure on Russia – the US continues to pursue a singularly belligerent foreign policy as part of a continued effort to maintain a US-led “international order” and to reassert US hegemony everywhere on Earth it is challenged.

    Vladimir Danilov
SYR344666Recently, the United States and Britain, actively using the propaganda tools that they possess, have increasingly begun to accuse Russia and China of interfering in their domestic affairs and election campaigns, and of effectively preparing coups in these countries. However, apart from making proclamatory statements, neither Washington nor London has presented any facts or documents that confirm these accusations, nor can they present them, since these accusations are false.

    10 February 2021 — Brave New Europe

People appear to understand the abstract concept of “limitless”, but it is more difficult to understand that the concept cannot and should not be applied to growth. Even socialists must shake off the idea that quantity can improve, when only quality counts.

    Finally, Whose Land Is It?

    1 March 2021 — Internationalist 360°

    Vladimir Acosta

It is not that the earth is ours and that it belongs to us. It is that we all belong to the earth. From it we live, with its fruits we feed ourselves, from its lakes and rivers comes the water we need, with its wood and stones we build our houses, even the most modern ones, because the metal of their frames also comes from the earth. We are buried in the earth when we die.

What You Can’t See Won’t Hurt You

As social media replaces actual social interactions, our thoughts and opinions are increasingly coming under the purview of the cybersecurity industry and national security interests that want to regulate what and who can see, talk to and hear in the U.S. cognitive space.

    4 March 2021 — Counter Currents

    by Dr Andrew Glikson

Warnings by leading climate scientists regarding the high sensitivity of the atmosphere in response to abrupt compositional changes, such as near-doubling of greenhouse gas concentrations, are now manifest: According to Wallace Broecker, (the “father” of climate science) “The paleoclimate record shouts out to us that, far from being self-stabilizing, the Earth’s climate system is an ornery beast which overreacts to even small nudges, and humans have already given the climate a substantial nudge”. As stated by James Zachos, “The Paleocene hot spell should serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of climate”.

EU citizens with complex mental health needs risk being removed and indefinitely detained from 30th June. Migrants Organise is taking the Home Office to court to prevent this injustice.

In this blog, our Legal Organiser, Brian Dikoff, argues that unless action is taken now, tens of thousands more vulnerable people are at risk of being left without any immigration status and plunged into the Hostile Environment.

We’ve got some good news. The US has kicked the US-UK trade deal into the long grass

    5 March 2021 — Global Justice Now

Throughout last year Donald Trump and Boris Johnson wanted to do this high risk deal in a hurry, but public pressure from activists like you stopped them from being able to hustle it through before the US election.

Since then we’ve been waiting to hear if the Biden administration would pick up where Trump left off or not – but last week they said that they won’t. Instead, the deal has been put on hold.

    Thank you

This year’s spring budget was like the worst kind of meal: A lot of fanfare before it, yet in the tasting rather bland, leaving much to be desired.

There were crumbs to be had. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced plans for the “world’s first” green bond, designed to give UK savers the chance to buy bonds which help support green projects, and gave the Bank of England a new mandate to align with the government’s net zero target.

UK Crony Capitalism: Boris Johnson misled Parliament

The toxic pesticide chlordecone was used on banana plantations in the French West Indies until 1993 but continued to pollute the waters surrounding the islands long afterwards. This pollution puzzled researchers, who expected the hydrophobic chemical to adhere to contaminated soil and not enter the watershed. A new study finds that use of the herbicide glyphosate, […]
