Being Jewish in North Islington Labour Party

    3 November 2020 — Red Pepper

    Lynne Segal

    by Lynne Segal

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to write, yet again, about being a Jewish member of the Labour Party in Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency. So let me tell you at once that it has been terrible, almost unbearable. We have had to watch a wholly false, but soon unstoppable, invention of charges of antisemitism against our MP, with our own views as Jewish members completely ignored.

UK plays leading role in legal threats against investigative journalists, new report says

    2 November 2020 — Open Democracy

Across the world, journalists investigating financial crime are most likely to face international legal action by UK-based companies, according to new research.

    Thomas Rowley

For investigative journalists working on corruption, the UK harbours the biggest legal threat. It is the origin of more legal action against journalists than any other, apart from their home countries, a new report by the Foreign Policy Centre says. (more…)

Kyōichi Sawada (Japan), A mother and her children wade across a river in Vietnam to escape US bombing, 1965.

    Dear friends,

Greetings from the desk of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

In mid-October, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released its World Economic Outlook report, which offered some dizzying data. For 2020, the IMF estimates that the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will decline by 4.4%, while in 2021 the global GDP will rise by 5.2%. Stagnation and decline will define the economic activity in both Europe and North America, as well as in large states such as Brazil and India. With a second wave of coronavirus infections in Europe and with the first wave not having been controlled in Brazil, India, and the United States, it appears that these IMF estimates might sink further downwards. We need to talk about state racism IRR News November 2020

5 November 2020 — Institute of Race Relations

In the current mainstream discussion about racism in political parties, the history of state racism – through the passing of implicitly racist immigration controls – doesn’t even merit a mention. It is as though politicians and media pundits have no memory, beyond the immediate moment, let alone a conception that the British state, like any other state in the world, can embed racism in its laws and policies. Racism in immigration controls started with the Conservatives’ passing of the 1905 Aliens Act to control Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe. And, if we want to talk about more recent shame, one of the most shameful acts of any post-war Labour government came in 1968 when it enacted the Commonwealth Immigrants Act – specifically designed to decitizenise and deny entry to East African Asians who were British citizens, having been taken by the coloniser, Britain, to Africa.

Indigenous people in front of the old Government Palace in Bolivia

For the ethical imperative of Buen Vivir, those who during the coup d’état hid, kept silent, and were complicit with the coup plotters, can no longer be public officials. Among these are the great majority of the former officials of the Morales government. They are also morally co-responsible for the massacres and humiliation of our indigenous brothers and sisters during the coup and under the de facto government.

Watch: Sheffield Doc/Fest 2012 – Occupy Documentary – Can Filmmakers Be Activists?

    13 September 2012 — Youtube

    Sheffield Doc/Fest

Protest and dissent has flourished across the world in the last 12 months, and documentary-makers are playing their part. But what role can filmmakers play in empowering the 99% and challenging Governments and Corporations? Join a panel of activist-filmmakers discussing their role in speaking truth to power, and using documentary as a tool of protest. There are great challenges in making a film about activists without legally endangering characters and yourself. Just as great a challenge is how to have radical social and political impact for audiences whilst maintaining a sustainable career. And just what is a protest doc anyway? Filmed by Sheffield Hallam University students and edited by Dave Holloway.

Salvador Allende’s Historic Inauguration 50 Years Later

Declassified White House Records Show How Nixon-Kissinger Set Strategy of Destabilization—And Why

Washington D.C., November 3, 2020 — Several days after Salvador Allende’s history-changing November 3, 1970, inauguration, Richard Nixon convened his National Security Council for a formal meeting on what policy the U.S. should adopt toward Chile’s new Popular Unity government. Only a few officials who gathered in the White House Cabinet Room knew that, under Nixon’s orders, the CIA had covertly tried, and failed, to foment a preemptive military coup to prevent Allende from ever being inaugurated. The SECRET/SENSITIVE NSC memorandum of conversation revealed a consensus that Allende’s democratic election and his socialist agenda for substantive change in Chile threatened U.S. interests, but divergent views on what the U.S. could, and should do about it.  “We can bring his downfall, perhaps, without being counterproductive,” suggested Secretary of State William Rogers, who opposed overt hostility and aggression toward Chile.  “We have to do everything we can to hurt [Allende] and bring him down,” agreed the secretary of defense, Melvin Laird.

Bidengate: Hunter Biden’s Story Could Help Hillary Clinton To Become Vice President

    2 November 2020 — Moon of Alabama

The recently revealed business deals of Hunter Biden will strongly influence politics after an eventual Joe Biden win in tomorrows election.

On October 15 the New York Post published a story on Hunter Biden based on data from a laptop Joe Biden’s son had left with a repair shop. The Biden family has not disputed that the laptop or the data on it is genuine. Next to the porn on the laptop there were thousand of emails which describe shady deals with a (now defunct) large Chinese energy company, CEFC.
