A Review of Andreas Malm’s “Corona, Climate, Chronic Emergency: War Communism in the Twenty-First Century”

Corona, Climate, Chronic Emergency: War Communism in the Twenty-First Century
    by Andreas Malm
    Verso
    2020

What can a virus tell us about climate breakdown, in its causation and in humanity’s response? And what can both tell us about capitalism and communism? These are the questions that Andreas Malm addresses in his new book forthcoming next month. It is a remarkable work, a tour de force. It portrays capitalism not simply in metaphorical colors as a meta-virus run by parasites, but as the godfather of actual viruses, the patron of parasites. Written at whirlwind pace, one of its leitmotifs is tempo: the varying velocities of climate collapse, locust swarms, zoonotic pathogenic leaps, and the dynamics and gear changes of political response and strategy. While others were hesitantly piecing together analyses of COVID-19 and its links to climate change and the capitalist system, as the familiar coordinates heaved all around in April 2020, Malm seems to have summoned the energies of the crisis and guided them onto the page. The prose crackles—this is an urgent book.

    Dear Friends,

Greetings from the desk of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

    Beirut, mon amour.

    Those shattered mirrors once were
    The smiling eyes of children,
    Now are star-lit.
    This city’s nights are bright.
    and luminous is Lebanon.
    Beirut, ornament of our world.
    Faces decorated with blood
    Dazzling, beyond beauty.
    Their elegant splendor
    Lights up the city’s lanes.
    And radiant is Lebanon.
    Beirut, ornament of our world.
    Every charred house, every ruin
    Is equal to Darius’ citadels.
Every warrior brings envy to Alexander.
    Every daughter is like Laila.
This city stands at time’s creation.
This city will stand at time’s end.

    – Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911-1984).

Diana Johnstone, Circle in the Darkness: Memoir of a World Watcher (Atlanta: Clarity Press, Inc., 2020),

    by John Marciano

Diana Johnstone, Circle in the Darkness: Memoir of a World Watcher (Atlanta: Clarity Press, Inc., 2020), 435 pages, $24.95, paperback.

The back cover of Diana Johnstone’s Circle in the Darkness calls the memoir “a veteran journalist’s lucid, uncompromising tour through half a century of contemporary history,” one that “recounts in detail how the Western Left betrayed its historical principles of social justice and peace and let itself be lured into approval of aggressive U.S.-NATO wars on the fallacious grounds of ‘human rights.’” Indeed, it is. Diana Johnstone’s fiercely courageous and independent reporting, historical analysis, and activism have stayed the course while managing to chalk up a veritable army of opponents: establishment Democrats, infantile 1960s New Leftists, would-be French student revolutionaries, identity politics adherents, influential U.S. and French intellectuals, Serbian-hating neoliberals promoting Responsibility to Protect (R2P) wars, NATO, and the U.S. National Security State. The people and institutions that have been exposed by Johnstone’s accurate reporting reveal just how well she’s been doing.

    Beirut Blast Wrap-up

    5-6 August 2020 — Moon of Alabama

    Updated below

Yesterday 2.750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, exploded. The blast killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 4,000. Many buildings in Beirut were severely damaged. The pressure wave broke windows as far 10 miles away. Beirut’s port is mostly destroyed. Lebanon’s national grain reserve, stored in grain silos next to the explosion, is gone.

Today ─ 6th August ─ marks the 75th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of the city of Hiroshima, in 1945. It is estimated that the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the ensuing radioactive fallout claimed the lives of up to a quarter of a million Japanese people ─ to this day they provide a stark symbol of the toxic legacy of conflict.

The smell of pro-Israel bias in the Foreign Office is overpowering

    By Stuart Littlewood

    Dominic Raab b2549

As George Washington put it,“a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils”. He warned that sympathy for the favourite nation encourages the illusion of common interest where none really exists, risks participation in its quarrels and wars, and involves“concessions to the favourite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained… And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favourite nation) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country.”

ATOMIC BOMBINGS AT 75: The Illegality of Nuclear Weapons

    4 August 2020 — Consortium News

The mere possession of nuclear weapons violate the Nuremberg Principles, decreed a day before Nagasaki, and other international laws, argues international law professor Francis Boyle.

    By Francis Boyle

The human race stands on the verge of nuclear self-extinction as a species, and with it will die most, if not all, forms of intelligent life on the planet earth. Any attempt to dispel the ideology of nuclearism and its attendant myth propounding the legality of nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence must directly come to grips with the fact that the nuclear age was conceived in the original sins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945.

    China & US Power

    14 July 2020 — Economics of Imperialism

    Tony Norfield

Can China do much to fight back against the power wielded by the US in the world economy? At first sight, that looks unlikely. China is big, but world trade is conducted in dollars, and the US has economic, political and military influence across the globe. The usual result of a tally of US might is that its position as hegemon is unassailable. But that would overlook how measures of its strength depend upon the world staying in the form that US power has created since 1945. If it doesn’t, then these will not count for as much. As one might expect, China has been responding to US attacks, and the outcome is likely to foment a split in the world economy.

The RCP 8.5 CO2 emissions pathway, long considered a “worst case scenario” by climate scientists, is the most appropriate for conducting assessments of climate change impacts by 2050, according to a paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A number of recent articles have dismissed RCP 8.5 as alarmist or misleading, but it is actually the closest approximation of both historical emissions and anticipated outcomes of current global climate policies, tracking within 1% of actual emissions.

We have a treatment in COVID-19 and it doesn’t have the support of Big Pharma and their experts!

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is effective in treating COVID-19.

It is effective in halting the progression of the disease, provided it is given early enough and provided it is given in accordance with “contraindications” and safety of use (cardiac).
