In response to domestic pressure, Trump agreed to extend the deadline for withdrawal of thousands of US troops from the northeaster Syrian province of al-Hasaka from the initial 30 days previously announced until April this year.  Journalistic warmongers and hawks in think-tanks and among the US establishment have been railing at Trump with implausible arguments for maintaining the presence of US forces in Syria. The attacks on Trump are mainly justified on the pretext of protecting the US allies, the Kurds, from possible extermination by the Turks. Other analysts dare to repeat the absurd US mantra that “ISIS has between 20,000 and 30,000 militants in Syria and Iraq” to justify the continuous occupation of northeast Syria. If these arguments were not enough, others claim that Trump would be  delivering the north of Syria to Iranian and Russian scarecrows, or that he would be facilitating the “Iranian-Baghdad-Damascus-Beirut connection”. Trump remains determined to pull out, despite his allies Israel, France and the UK begging him to stay longer in the Levant.

As ever, it didn’t take long for them to make up their minds. Roy Greenslade reports in the Guardian on the media reaction to Donald Trump’s bombardment of Syria in ‘retaliation’ (USA Today) for the alleged chemical weapons attacks on Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib, Syria:

‘There was an identifiable theme in almost every leading article and commentary: “Well done Donald, but … ” The “buts” amounted to eloquent judgments on the president’s character, conveying explicit messages of disquiet and distrust.’

How damn convenient!

Syria Has Used Chemical Weapons Against Rebels, U.S. and European Officials Conclude
American and European intelligence analysts now believe that President Bashar al-Assad’s troops have used chemical weapons against rebel forces in the civil war in Syria, an assessment that will put added pressure on a deeply divided Obama administration to develop a response to a provocation that the president himself has declared a “red line.”

So says the NYT quoting an ‘internal memorandum’. And just as the ‘rebels’ got a bloody nose and it looks like the Syrian govt might be turning the corner. It’s Saddam’s phony bloody WMD all over again!

But will we learn? And more importantly, will our propagandized population stop this madness? I’m doubtful. So another country destroyed in the Empire’s orgy of destruction.

Shame on us for doing nothing to stop the barbarians!

Assad and those pesky emails – Who is Sam @ alshahba?

It seems that my early suspicions were correct.  None of the emails leaked belong to Bashshar Al-Asad, who I am told rarely use emails for security reason.  But this Syrian opposition website (which is known for having inside sources in Syria itself) had published this article on the “leaked” emails back in February and published the name of the government official whose email is Sam@alshahba.  His name is…Dr. Sam Dallah.  This makes sense if you read the emails and if you read the message from Shehrezad Al-Ja`fari in which she tells this sam that she misses him.  Plus, read this letter sent from sam@alshahba to Buthuayna Sha`ban, and it is clear that it can’t be from Bashshar Al-Asad from the phraseology and the manner of address.  And Al-Haqiqah says that Sam in a letter (another one?) indicated that he visited the Turkish embassy in Damascus, and of course, it can’t be Bashshar.  When I expressed early skepticism about the so-called Bashshar’s email many out there thought that I acted too instinctively.  I did, and I was right.
