Without Culture, Freedom Is Impossible: The Thirty-Eighth Newsletter (2022)

Thursday, 22 September 2022 — The Tricontinental

01 Roberto Matta Chile webRoberto Matta (Chile), Cuba es la capital (‘Cuba Is the Capital’), 1963.

Dear friends,

Greetings from the desk of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

In 2002, Cuba’s President Fidel Castro Ruz visited the country’s National Ballet School to inaugurate the 18th Havana International Ballet Festival. Founded in 1948 by the prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso (1920–2019), the school struggled financially until the Cuban Revolution decided that ballet – like other art forms – must be available to everyone and so must be socially financed. At the school in 2002, Castro remembered that the first festival, held in 1960, ‘asserted Cuba’s cultural vocation, identity, and nationality, even under the most adverse circumstances, when major dangers and threats loomed over the country’.

MoA’s take on the Empire’s Proxy War against the Global South

Friday, 23 September 2022 — The New Dark Age

I couldn’t resist publishing the backlog of Moon of Alabama’s take on the Empire’s war on the Global South. It complements, to some degree, MK Bhadrakumar’s excellent analysis reproduced below. B

Why Ukraine referendum is a big deal

Russia’s newest ICBM Sarmat equipped with maneuvering warheads

The referendum on September 23-27 in the Donbass and southern Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine on their accession to Russian Federation is, prima facie, an exercise of the right of self-determination by the native population who reject the western-backed regime change in Kiev in 2014 and the ascendancy of extreme nationalist forces with neo-Nazi leanings in the power structure.

Taking a break…

Saturday, 17 September 2022 — The New Dark Age

Updates below…

Sunday, 18 September, 2022 – Sunset From my hospital Window

I’m kinda ‘under the weather’ right now, in fact I’m feeling rather shitty,  some kind of chest infection which, hopefully will respond to antibiotics (when I can get hold of them with our trashed NHS!), so I won’t be updating the site for a couple of days I think.

Wednesday, 21 September 2022

From my hospital window somewhere in London, around 7am.

I’m planning at least one piece on the neoliberal, authoriatarian transformation of the National Health Service [sic], the NHS. Oh, and it wasn’t some shitty chest infection but once again, my heart. Not a heart attack but very close to it. Right now, I’m shattered but as I say above, this transformatiom is very closely connected to my health, or lack of.

Friday, 23 September 2022

Well my illness  is a deal more serious than I thought. I’m not dying, well not immediately anyway but I have to take it real easy for awhile, which means I’ll continue the updating but at nothing like the usual rate. My daily Ukraine News Links will have to be suspended for awhile unfortunately but I will publish stuff that I think is important, for example, MK Bhadrakumar’s excellent analysis that essentially presents the view from the Global South (I hope he doesn’t disagree with that!).

That’s all for now folks…

India’s gaffe at Samarkand

Tuesday, 20 September 2022 — Indian Punchline

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (L) met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Samarkand, Uzbekistan, September 16, 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Samarkand on September 16 after the SCO Summit turned into a media scandal. The Western media zeroed in on six words culled out of context in the PM’s opening remarks — “today’s era is not of war” —  to triumphantly proclaim that India is finally distancing itself from Russia on Ukraine issue, as the US and European leaders have been incessantly demanding.

Ukraine News Links 15-16 September 2022

Friday, 16 September 2022 •22:00 — The New Dark Age

There may be some duplication due to cross-posting and may be updated throughout the day, so please check back. If it gets updated, I usually insert the time on the line above. A lot of cross-posting usually indicates that the article is popular and some links may not work, depending on your location but at least you have some idea of the scale of censorship now operating in the ‘democratic’ West.

Police response to anti-monarchy protests shows the need for Netpol’s Charter for Freedom of Assembly Rights

Friday, 16 September 2022 — NetPol

There has been outrage at the arrests. But protest is not illegal!

#NotMyKing and police

There has been outrage this week at the arrests and threat of arrest of anti-monarchy protesters. However the arrests have also led to a lot of misinformation and alarmist statements about the law and our right to protest.

Royal Money: Charles III and the Wealth Dimension

Friday, 16 September 2022 — CounterCurrents

Once the fixated adoration with the late Queen Elizabeth II starts cooling, the accountants of public welfare and decency will be stunned to realise the costs and wealth associated with the royal institution.  Her successor, Charles III, is continuing in that vein, a jarring note of wealth and pomp even as prices rise and the hefty bills for citizens (should we say subjects?), bite.

Crown prosecutor levels blackmail charges against Palestine Action

In June, I wrote an analysis of Britain’s disturbingly draconian new Sections of that bill give every appearance of having been specifically drawn up in order to undermine Palestine Action.

Openly committed to damaging and destroying the British-based assets of top Israeli arms manufacturers, including Elbit Systems, Palestine Action has since launch in mid-2020 pulled off a string of successes, resulting in the closure of the company’s sites, and abandonment of offices by companies leasing space to Elbit.

Chris Kaba – a family fights for justice

Thursday, 15 September 2022 — Institute of Race Relations

The accession of a new monarch has led many to question the nature of their citizenship (along with their right to protest). But the citizenship of many British citizens, particularly Muslims, has been in question for some time. A new IRR report, Citizenship: from right to privilege by Frances Webber shows how changes in the law over the past two decades have made citizenship precarious, disposable and contingent for a number of minority ethnic Britons, mainly Muslim, leading to a ‘second class citizenship’ for British Muslims.

Russia won’t congratulate CIA on its diamond jubilee

Thursday 15 September 2022 — Indian Punchline

A US Senate commission in 1975 counted eight assassination attempts by CIA agents on Fidel Castro during 1960-1965

In the Russian journal Natsionalnaya Oborona (National Defence), the chief of Russia’s foreign intelligence Sergey Naryshkin has written a riveting essay on the 75th anniversary of the Central Intelligence Agency, which falls on Sunday. It is an unusual gesture, especially in the middle of the hybrid war in Ukraine.

Ukraine SitRep – Hit On Dam Endangers Ukrainian Troops – Russians Defeat More Counterattacks

Thursday, 15 September, 2022 — Moon of Alabama

The BBC continues to misinterpret war news from Ukraine:

Residents in some areas were told to evacuate, city head Oleksandr Vilkul said, but he added the situation was under control.
