Listen: Uncovering the CIA: Whistleblower Philip Agee interviewed with John Marks (1976)

31 October, 2021 — 21st Century Wire

Philip Agee was a former Central Intelligence Agency officer who turned into one of the agency’s most vocal critics, and who exposed the inner workings of Unites States regime change and destablizations operations all over the world. During his nearly four decades in the intelligence game, Agee became disillusioned with his work for the agency, and later went on to publish numerous books including “Inside the Company: CIA Diary” (1975) which infuriated US officials after identifying some 250 officers, front companies and foreign agents working for the CIA. Agee passed away in Havana, Cuba in 2008. During his activist career, Agee inspired a new wave of publications including Covert Action Information Bulletin, as well as numerous films detailing the clandestine exploits of the American deep state.

South Africa: All of them must go!

29 October 2021 — Origin: New Frame

Monday’s elections offer scant hope for a way out of our escalating crisis. Reality demands a rigorous pessimism of the intellect if we are to generate a viable optimism of the will.

It seems likely that the elections on Monday will bring significant change to how many of our cities are ruled. All the surveys show that millions of South Africans hold local government in contempt, that a significant number of former ANC supporters will not be able to bring themselves to vote for a party that is now rotten from the bottom to the top, and that there will be a sharp decline in turnout.

The UK government is consulting on changes to data protection law that include a proposal to facilitate “joint operational activity between law enforcement and national security partners.” The intention is to eliminate certain legal barriers to collaboration between the police, security and intelligence agencies, and other entities such as private companies. Churchill & British Imperialism

18 October 2021 — Economics of Imperialism

Even patriotic Brits know that their hero Winston Churchill did not win World War 2 or fly a Spitfire. What they, and others, may not know is how his statements often shed a clear light on British imperialism. From Britain’s reliance on colonies, to the political rationale for giving the working class some welfare services, Churchill’s rhetorical flourishes in speeches, newspaper articles, and deliberations with his peers, illuminate things all too often absent from contemporary political consciousness.

Being a Child in Yemen Is the Stuff of Nightmares: The Forty-Third Newsletter (2021)

28 October 2021 — Tricontinental

Murad Subay (Yemen), Fuck War, 2018.

Dear friends,

Greetings from the desk of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – along with other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – began to bomb Yemen. These countries entered a conflict that had been ongoing for at least a year as a civil war escalated between the government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, the Ansar Allah movement of the Zaidi Shia, and al-Qaeda. The GCC – led by the Saudi monarchy – wanted to prevent any Shia political project, whether aligned with Iran or not, from taking power along Saudi Arabia’s border. The attack on Yemen can be described, therefore, as an attack by the Sunni monarchs against the possibility of what they feared would be a Shia political project coming to power on the Arabian Peninsula.
