Empire Under Obama, Part 1: Political Language and the ‘Mafia Principles’ of International Relations By Andrew Gavin Marshall

7 October 2013 — The Hampton Institute

Barack ObamaIn the first part of this essay series on ‘Empire Under Obama,’ I will aim to establish some fundamental premises of modern imperialism, or what is often referred to as ‘international relations,’ ‘geopolitics’, or ‘foreign policy.’ Specifically, I will refer to George Orwell’s writing on ‘political language’ in order to provide a context in which the discourse of imperialism may take place out in the open with very little comprehension on the part of the public which consumes the information; and further, to draw upon Noam Chomsky’s suggestion of understanding international relations as the application of ‘Mafia Principles’ to foreign policy. This part provides some background on these issues, and future parts to this essay series will be examining the manifestation of empire in recent years.

From Iraq, a tragic reminder to prosecute the war criminals By John Pilger

27 May 2013 — John Pilger

The dust in Iraq rolls down the long roads that are the desert’s fingers. It gets in your eyes and nose and throat; it swirls in markets and school playgrounds, consuming children kicking a ball; and it carries, according to Dr. Jawad Al-Ali, “the seeds of our death”. An internationally respected cancer specialist at the Sadr Teaching Hospital in Basra, Dr. Ali told me that in 1999, and today his warning is irrefutable. “Before the Gulf war,” he said, “we had two or three cancer patients a month. Now we have 30 to 35 dying every month. Our studies indicate that 40 to 48 per cent of the population in this area will get cancer: in five years’ time to begin with, then long after. That’s almost half the population. Most of my own family have it, and we have no history of the disease. It is like Chernobyl here; the genetic effects are new to us; the mushrooms grow huge; even the grapes in my garden have mutated and can’t be eaten.”

New World Order Political Puppets: How Thatcherism Paved the Way for Tony Blair and “New Labour” By Colin Todhunter

16 April 2013 — Global Research

Blair's Journey: Questions Before Charge

Most people are already aware that there were many similarities between Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher. Both were conviction politicians, both had political love-ins with US presidents and both liked to talk tough. Affable Tony could always ham it up with a good dose of media-friendly mock sincerity and tough talking. Thatcher and her PR people cynically forged the template for that. And both had a tendency to ignore that damned nuisance called public opinion and to land the country into a gruesome mess not of its own choosing.

Wikileaks, Anonymous: “Media Instruments” Supportive of US-NATO Sponsored Regime Change? By Ryan O’Neill

4 December, 2012Global Research

Throughout early 2011, the European liberal left were in a frenzy over the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings that were sweeping across the region. The Mainstream Media supplied around the clock coverage of the mass demonstrations in Tahrir Square as we were told that the people of the Arab world were standing up to tyranny and demanding the democratic freedoms and human rights that are held in such high esteem in the west.

As Gaza is savaged again, understanding the BBC’s historical role is vital By John Pilger

22 November 2012 — John Pilger

In Peter Watkins’ remarkable BBC film, The War Game, which foresaw the aftermath of an attack on London with a one-megaton nuclear bomb, the narrator says: “On almost the entire subject of thermo-clear weapons, there is now practically total silence in the press, official publications and on TV. Is there hope to be found in this silence?”

The ‘Pro-Israel’ Network Behind the 'Innocence' Video By Justin Raimondo

18 September, 2012 — Antiwar

[Amazing: BBC News still continues to describe the video as “amateur” at every opportunity, as if somehow that diminishes its importance in the propaganda war being waged by the Empire. But more importantly, if the facts uncovered by Raimondo are accurate, then whether the movie was ‘crudely made’ or not (and surely this was deliberate), it was bankrolled with a lot of cash by Media in Christ, an outfit run by one Joseph Nasrallah Abdelmasih, see the Daily Beast article on Media in Christ for more details. WB]

If someone had planned to upend US foreign policy — to utterly destroy the very basis [.pdf] of all our diplomats (and military personnel) have been working to achieve in the Middle East and throughout the Muslim world — they couldn’t have done a better job of it than whoever put together Innocence of Muslims.
