Assad in Western eyes: From riches to rags By Dmitry Babich

29 February, 2012Voice of Russia

The recent pronouncements by Western leaders and the monarchs of the Persian Gulf  Emirates on the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his regime make one want to rub one’s eyes. Are we hearing them from the same people we have just seen shaking hands with Assad and hinting at lucrative contracts with his “regime”? Didn’t the French president Nicolas Sarkozy consider it an honor to meet Assad at his Elysee Palace just one year before? Now Sarkozy calls him a “mass killer.” And wasn’t Sarkozy’s glamorous wife Carla Bruni entertained by the company of Assad’s British-raised wife, Asma? And can a person indeed change from a welcome guest to a mass killer in the short period between December 2010, when al-Assad’s last visit to France took place, and now?

Empire, Power, and People with Andrew Gavin Marshall- Episode 8

29 February 2012 — www.boilingfrogspost.com

“Black History in the United States: Slavery, Segregation, and Social Control”

In a highly critical black history of the United States, this episode examines the social construction of race (and racism) starting in the late 1600s as a means of social control, devised through the colonial legal system to separate white and black labour, prison labour, black education system, the developments of ghettos as a means of segregating the black population, the civil rights organizations in an attempt to steer the movement away from its natural and potentially revolutionary course to confront the entire social- economic- political system of racism, and the “war on drugs” and laws disproportionately targeting the black community.

Understanding the history of those who have been most oppressed within it, is vital to understanding the true nature of the society we live in; thus, the black history of the United States is indivisible from the total history of the United States, and the subject bears relevance to the future of poverty and class struggle in a world of enormous inequality.

EMERGENCY – ESCAPING METHANE GAS IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN

29 February 2012

December 2011

Dear World Leader
Emergency intervention to stabilize Arctic sea ice and thereby Arctic methane is today a matter of our survival.

Ameg map

I write to you on behalf of the Arctic Methane Emergency Group, which includes among its founding members Peter Wadhams, Professor of Ocean Physics, Cambridge; Stephen Salter, Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design, Edinburgh; and Brian Orr, former Principal Science Officer at the UK DoE (as was). The Group has received support and advice from many pre-eminent climate science colleagues around the world. The purpose of this letter is to respectfully bring to your attention new evidence of the rapidly deepening climate change crisis in the Arctic. We appeal to you to support our call to put the imminent loss of Arctic summer sea ice and escalation of Arctic methane emissions at the top of the climate change agenda and to support emergency measures to cool the Arctic.

Impotence in the face of impunity? By William Bowles

29 February 2012

A fellow writer tells me that she feels overwhelmed by events and I feel the same way. An awful sense of deja vu that we have as much chance of stopping the march to total war as they had in the 1930s. Except that this time it will not be us citizens of Empire who are on the receiving end of Western industrial-scale murder and pillage. The world’s first colonial world war, with the haves pitted against the have-nots. As I have remarked before, without a non-capitalist alternative to not only reign in some of the ‘excesses’ of capitalism but also curtail its relentless expansion, the world is essentially defenceless.

American Unipolar Moment Has Ended, Global Multipolarity Emerges BY M Zarrar Haider

28 February 2012 — Pakistan Observer

Emerging multipolar world

The last two decades witnessed the expression of unipolarity in terms of unilateralism with invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan and the endemic Global War on Terror (GWOT). We are now in a new, fast-evolving multipolar world in which some developing countries are emerging as economic powers; others are moving towards becoming additional poles of growth; and some are struggling to attain their potential within this new system where North and South, East and West, are now points on a compass, not economic destinies. A new global order is rapidly emerging where the United States will no doubt remain a very important player.
