AFRICOM Year Two: Taking The Helm Of The Entire World By Rick Rozoff

22 October, 2009 — Stop NATO

‘The developments come as the White House seeks grounds to establish a major military presence in Africa….[A]nalysts caution that similar pretexts were used to justify the US invasion of Afghanistan, the missile attacks in Pakistan, and its waning military operations in Iraq, where the civilian population continues to bear the brunt of the US intervention.’

‘AFRICOM facilitates the United States advancing on the African continent, taking control of the Eurasian continent and proceeding to take the helm of the entire globe.’

October 1st marked the one-year anniversary of the activation of the first U.S. overseas military command in a quarter of a century, Africa Command (AFRICOM).

AFRICOM was established as a temporary command under the wing of U.S. European Command (EUCOM) a year earlier and launched as an independent entity on October 1, 2008.

Its creation signalled several important milestones in plans by the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies to expand into all corners of the earth and to achieve military, political and economic hegemony in the Southern as well as the Northern Hemisphere.

Firuzeh Shokooh Valle, “Puerto Rico: Reflections on the National Strike”

22 October, 2009 — MRZine – Monthly Review

On October 15, thousands of people in Puerto Rico flooded the streets to protest the government’s decision to lay off around 17,000 government employees (in total there have been around 25,000 lay-offs this year). Workers and members of trade unions, women, environmentalists, religious groups, students, teachers, professors, lawyers, and the LGBT community, among many other groups of the civil society, answered the call of the labor movement that initially convened the strike.  Universities, schools, and stores closed for the day.

The organizers of the event estimated that 150,000-200,000 people participated in the massive demonstration that started from different points in the heart of the metropolitan area of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, particularly from the financial district, and converged in the immediate surrounding of Plaza Las Américas, the largest mall of the Caribbean whose owners contributed to governor Luis Fortuño’s campaign. There have been no official estimates, although government officials minimized the number.  The Governor and his Chief of Staff, Marcos Rodríguez Ema, immediately stated that the law (Law 7 of Fiscal Emergency) that made the lay-offs viable would not be repealed. There were no incidents, although at the end of the demonstration there were moments of tension between students and the police.

Methodist bishop Juan Vera, one of the keynote speakers of the demonstration and a member of the coalition of civil society organizations Todo Puerto Rico por Puerto Rico, declared that the country would be in a “state of pacific insurrection” until the government changed its policies and that there would be more acts of civil disobedience and resistance. Other organizers of the event are already talking about future strategies and another strike that would paralyze the entire Island.

Criminals shouldn’t be allowed to investigate themselves By Khalid Amayreh

22 October, 2009 — Palestine Think Tank

cast-lead-victim.jpgIn its rabid efforts to whitewash the Goldstone report, Israel is likely to carry out another disingenuous probe into its genocidal onslaught against the Gaza Strip nearly ten months ago.

The report, compiled by South African judge Richard Goldstone, himself a Jew, accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians.

As many as 1,400 Palestinians, mostly non-combatants including more than 330 children, were killed during the 22-day campaign which some historians and intellectuals compared to the allied saturation bombing of the German city of Dresden at the close of the Second World War.

Israel has already conducted a number of “investigations” into the Gaza blitzkrieg which exonerated the Israeli army of any wrongdoing.

However, nearly everyone familiar with patterns of Israeli behavior realizes that investigations by Israel into crimes committed by Israel didn’t have an iota of credibility.

In the final analysis, criminals, especially war criminals, are unlikely to indict themselves by admitting guilt.

Hence, it is a foregone conclusion that any new probe by Israel of its pornographic crimes in Gaza would be a repetition of past investigations.

Palestinian Protester to Blair: You are a Terrorist

22 October, 2009 — Palestine Think Tank

blair-hebron1.jpg“You are a terrorist, you are not welcome in the land of Palestine”. A Palestinian from the Hamdan family shouted these words in the face of Tony Blair, Quartet Representative for “Peace” in the Middle East, when he arrived at the Iron Cage at the entrance of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron. A bodyguard of Tony “the poodle” Blair overwhelmed the angry Palestinian when he approached phony Tony, and dragged him several meters away.

blair-hebron2.jpgPalestinian eyewitnesses said that the citizen, who shouted in the face of Tony Blair, was subjected several times to attacks by the Israeli occupation soldiers in the heart of city of Hebron, just as all the Palestinian people who live in the heart of the old city are subjected to regular attacks from the IDF and the Jewish criminal squatters as part of their daily life. The heart of the old city of Hebron, turned under the Israeli occupation into a concentration camp closed by iron gates controlled by the IDF occupation.

The visits of Tony Blair to the Palestinian towns are frowned upon by the Palestinian public opinion, he is not welcome in our land and in our cities. The PA media coverage does not show this fact, because the visits of Tony Blair are part of the dirty “politics” of the PA.

blair-hebron3.jpgTony Blair, this so-called “Quartet Representative” for “Peace in the Middle East” is a war criminal culpable massive war crimes against Iraq, who is culpable for the mass murder of thousands of Iraqi civilians, and the increased violence in Iraq, that many women in that country are forced to turn to prostitution in order to sustain themselves.

The government of Tony Blair was always with the Zionists, and the only peace which he want for us is the peace of the cemetery.

Whose democracy continued… By William Bowles

23 October 2009

It’s not fair to leave you hanging like that (see Whose Democracy?), we really need to know why the left in the so-called developed world has failed so miserably to carry out its allotted task, a task laid down by our ancestors who spilt much blood, sweat and tears.

It occurs to me that the left is trapped in its own history, a history that views the industrial working classas the natural ‘partner’ in the revolutionary project but without recognizing that it is now a shadow of its former self. Compounding this paradox is the lack of debate over who is is to take their place, or join the struggle?

Learn from Cuba says New Orleans mayor By Tom Mellen

21 October, 2009 — The Morning Star

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin praised Cuba’s disaster response system on Tuesday, acknowledging that the islands’s socialist authorities ‘do a much better job than we do.’

Mr Nagin, who arrived in Cuba last Friday along with 15 officials from police, fire and port agencies, has met Cuban civil defence authorities and seen presentations on how the whole island mobilises during disasters.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 per cent of New Orleans, killing more than 1,600 people.

Last year, hurricanes Gustav, Ike and Paloma all pounded Cuba, killing seven.

Mr Nagin acknowledged that ‘one of the biggest weaknesses we had during Katrina is it wasn’t clear who was the top authority.

‘Here in Cuba you don’t have that problem. The government says: ‘This is what we’re doing, these are the resources we are going to deploy,’ and it pretty much happens.’

In Cuba, Revolutionary Defence Committees organise communities at neighbourhood level, providing social services as well as helping with evacuations.

‘They do a much better job than we do on knowing their citizens at a very, very detailed level, block by block,’ Mr Nagin declared.

Last week, US President Barack Obama told a New Orleans town hall meeting that, in the days after ‘that terrible storm struck your shores, all the world bore witness to the fact that the damage from Katrina was not caused just by a disaster of nature but also by a breakdown of government, that government wasn’t adequately prepared and we didn’t appropriately respond.’

Then-president Fidel Castro offered the US medical assistance after Katrina struck, including sending doctors to the area to treat storm victims, but the State Department declined the offer.

The Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex: A Deadly Fairy Tale By Dr. Doug Henderson and Dr. Gary Null

21 October, 2009 Global ResearchProgressive Radio Network

It has been a particularly bad month for the pharmaceutical industrial complex in its ongoing litigations in American courts. Among the main pharmaceutical headlines, Merck’s Gardasil vaccine for HPV, now being widely administered to pre-teens, was found to be linked to amyltrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease; following a $1.4 billion fine in promoting one of its blockbuster drugs Zyprexa off-label, deceptive correspondence was uncovered by Eli Lilly gaming the system again by promoting another one of its drugs, Cymbalta, off-label for fibromyalgia; AstraZeneca was fined $160 million for scamming the Medicaid system in Kentucky after being fined $215 million for ripping off Alabama; Glaxo lost a Pennsylvania trial for failing to warn doctors and pregnant women of the dangers of its antidepressant drug Paxil related to birth defects; and Pfizer scored a record-breaking fine of $2.3 billion for illegally marketing several drugs over the years: Bextra, Zyvox, Geodon and Lyrica. These kinds of charges, among the many others, have become a habit for drug makers for the past dozen years.

When we speak of the pharmaceutical industry complex, it does not refer solely to private drug manufacturers. The complex, like a Matrix that holds captive the health of the nation in medical slavery by its own design and manipulation, is a consortium, a spiders’ web woven with financial attachments throughout the medical profession. In addition to the pharmaceutical and medical device firms, this complex includes every government health agency—the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and or course the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—as well as drug lobbying firms now employing a large number of former Congresspersons, insurance and HMO companies, all of the leading professional medical associations such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the majority of medical schools and their research departments who are heavily funded by drug money, many of the most prestigious medical journals, and ultimately all of this filtering downward to the physicians who diagnose our illnesses and prescribe our medications and treatments.
