Why peace in Palestine-Israel is unattainable
Jamal Kanj, Redress 6/27/2013
But for the chap from Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza who emerged earlier this week as the winner of the Arab Idol, the news from Palestine is grim.
The newly appointed Palestinian prime minister resigned and Israel still insists it should be able to negotiate over dividing the pie while it continues to eat it.
By the end of April, US Secretary of State John Kerry succeeded in tailoring another peace plan to entice Israel. Arab ministers supposedly agreed to amend a decade-old peace plan to satisfy Israeli demand for legalizing major illegal Jewish colonies in the West Bank.
In May 2009, Israel responded to the US-mediated overture by issuing permits to build 296 illegal new homes in the Jews-only colony of Beit El near Ramallah. This week the secretary of state was scheduled to arrive on his fifth visit since February in an attempt to restart the Palestinian and Israeli negotiation.
The visit seems to be on hold to give time to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to consider a new US economic peace plan and for Israel to give Abbas a face-saving cover to return to the negotiation table.
Israel is already sending mixed messages.
According to news reports that have appeared in Israeli daily Ma’ariv, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is considering a token gesture of releasing a small number of Palestinian prisoners and to issue a temporary freeze “outside the settlement blocks” in the West Bank.
The deceptive “freeze” may force Abbas to succumb to American pressure while Netanyahu can claim – and rightly so – it is irrelevant as building inside the Jews-only “settlement blocks” will continue. more.. e-mail

The US Values We Share With Israel?
by Mitchell Plitnick,  6/26/2013
It is clear that US citizens need to start asking what exactly we are supporting in Israel. The general belief and political rhetoric tell us that the US is, through military aid and diplomatic support, protecting Israel’s very existence, that is, the lives of millions of Jews whose history is so full of episodes where we were the victims of violence, ethnic cleansing and even genocide. But in recent years, the story of Israel as a Jewish state has been dictated by demographics and questions of apartheid. So when we support Israel, are we protecting a long-besieged minority and a US ally or are we supporting the kinds of discrimination that are anathema to most of the world?
A disturbing answer to this question was provided by former US President Bill Clinton in his remarks at the celebration of Israeli President Shimon Peres’ 90th birthday: “Is it really okay with you if Israel has a majority of its people living within your territory who are not now, and never will be, allowed to vote?” Clinton asked. “If it is, can you say with a straight face that you’ll be a democracy? If you let them vote, can you live with not being a Jewish state? And if you can’t live with one of those things, then you are left with trying to cobble together some theory of a two-state solution.”
Clinton’s words are a rather clear summation of both the US and Israeli approach to the Israeli occupation, at least among those who are desperately clinging to the long-dead Oslo Process. Those words carry some shocking modes of thought; they also demonstrate very clearly why Israel has gotten more intransigent and the United States ever more feckless over the years.
Yousef Munayyer, writing in the Daily Beast, takes on the broadest and most important point that Clinton’s disturbing words raise. “Palestinian freedom should not be framed as Israel’s choice,” Munayyer wrote. “Rather, as the occupier of Palestinian territory and millions of stateless Palestinians, this is Israel’s obligation, an American obligation and an international obligation. It’s about time we start talking about it this way.” more.. e-mail

Can Rouhani solve ’the Iran nuclear issue’?
Hamid Dabashi, Al Jazeera.com 6/26/2013
The Iranian nuclear crisis is no crisis at all. It is a fabricated issue,” writes Hamid Dabashi.
“A nuclear weaponised Iran destabilises the region, prompts a regional arms race, and wastes the scarce resources in the region.”
Who do you think might have written this sentence? Chances are very few people around the world would know, or would now believe that the person who wrote this sentence is none other than the current president-
elect of the Islamic Republic, Mr. Hassan Rouhani.

The next question is even more intriguing. When would you guess Mr. Rouhani wrote this sentence? Check the live link above: It was published on Tuesday 9 May 2006, exactly seven years before he was elected the president of the Islamic republic by a landslide.
Now – where do you think he published this essay, and in what language – in Persian in some obscure venue in Iran, perhaps? No – check the link again. It was written and published in English in Time Magazine, right under the nose of George W. Bush during the second term of his presidency. In the words of my Columbia University colleague, Gary Sick, who had recently dug this article out and posted it on his Facebook: “The US turned it down.”
Now do please read the rest of the article, composed in English by President-elect Rouhani himself and published in a US venue. In it you read an extended argument why the development of a nuclear weapon is not in the best interest of Iran. “Taking account of US nuclear arsenal and its policy of ensuring a strategic edge for Israel,” Rouhani continues, “an Iranian bomb will accord Iran no security dividends. There are also some Islamic and developmental reasons why Iran as an Islamic and developing state must not develop and use weapons of mass destruction.” more.. e-mail

Noam Chomsky on secret trade deals, killing polio workers, fighting for the commons in Turkey and the heroism of Bradley Manning
Laura Flanders interviews Noam Chomsky, GritTV.org, Israeli Occupation Archive 6/19/2013
What do Takism Square, Google Glass, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and NSA data gathering have in common? Find out in this interview with Noam Chomsky.
On the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the pending trade deal critics are calling “NAFTA on steroids”:
“These are patent rules so high, if they’d existed in 19th century the US would be an agricultural producer today… What we now call “piracy” is the way the rich countries developed. There’s a phrase for it in trade theory: kicking away the ladder. First you violate all the rules, then by the time you get rich you kick away the ladder so others can’t do it too and you preach about ‘free trade.'”
     On the “war on terror”:
The way they tracked Osama bin Laden was by a fake vaccination campaign…a grotesque violation of Hippocratic oath. One of the consequences right away was attacks on polio vaccination workers… One of these days, someone’s going to point to a child sitting in a wheel chair and say ‘you did it to him.'”
     On Google Glass:
“A dream that Orwell couldn’t have concocted.”
On the Turkish protests around Taksim Square:
“The very brave people in Taksim Square are trying to protect the very last remnants of the commons from the wrecking block… That’s important for Turkey but it’s more than that. It’s the commons which globally we’re destroying; the environment and the atmosphere, by the same wrecking ball.” — See also: Video – GritTV.org more.. e-mail

Globalization of NATO and its Catastrophic Failu
re in Libya

Palestine Chronicle: 27 Jun 2013 – By Ludwig Watzal The books “The Globalization of NATO” and “Global NATO and the Catastrophic Failure in Libya” deal with the expansion of a military alliance that was supposed to be solely defensive in character and confined to Europe. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc countries, Nato turned global and embarked on an expansionist and aggressive worldwide strategy in order to redraw the political map of the world. Taking the last 20 years into account, one can call the Nato alliance the greatest threat to world peace. Established in April 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, better known as Nato, was meant to protect its members from an attack by the Soviet Union. The cold war was in full swing. With Germany’s accession to Nato on May 9, 1955, the Warsaw Pact was founded in return on May 14, 1955. The defensive character of Nato…more

From Tahrir to Taksim: West Reserves Right to Interfere
Palestine Chronicle: 27 Jun 2013 – By Ramzy Baroud The distance between Cairo’s Tahrir Square and Istanbul’s Taksim Square is impossibly long. There can be no roadmap sufficient enough to use the popular experience of the first in order to explicate the circumstances that lead to the other. Many have tried to insist on the similarities between the two since it is fashionable these days to link news worthy events, however worlds apart, to other events. Following the popular revolt that gripped Egypt in early 2011, deemed with the ever inclusive title ‘the Arab Spring’, intellectual jugglers began envisaging ‘springs’ popping up all over the region and beyond. In recent weeks, when protesters took to the streets of several Turkish cities, comparisons ensued once again. Intellectual opportunism however is not a distinct phenomenon, but a reflection of a wider western conception of political opportunism. Once the ‘Arab Spring’ was recognized as an opportunity of sorts, the…more
