UK: 3 weeks to protect renters from eviction

3 June 2020 — Generation Rent

In just three weeks, the Government’s eviction ban comes to an end. We need your help to prevent renters losing their homes in a public health crisis.

Homeowners have had their mortgage holidays extended, but renters have heard nothing. 1 in 8 renters are behind with rent payments, and will be at risk of eviction and homelessness when the ban ends.

Landlords have been asked to show compassion, but we know that a majority are demanding the rent in full. Renters need better protection. We are calling on the Government to:

  • Extend the ban on Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions, until the Government has introduced legislation to permanently abolish them.
  • Prevent evictions for rent arrears, to ensure those who have lost income do not also lose their home.
  • Increase Local Housing Allowance (LHA) and remove the benefit cap to ensure that benefits cover housing costs.

But we need your help to convince the Government to act.

Will you email your MP asking them to protect renters?

By clicking the button above, you’ll be taken to a page that asks for your postcode. We’ve written a template email but if you can, it would be great for you to add some more information on why it’s so important renters are protected throughout this crisis.

So, William, will you help by emailing your MP?

The impact of coronavirus will be felt for months to come. It’s essential that everyone has access to a decent, safe, secure place to live.

Thanks for being involved,

Caitlin – Generation Rent
