Safe Passage: Here’s what Priti Patel should do

25 June 2021 — Safe Passage

Today, we – the Young Leaders of Safe Passage, Hummingbird and KRAN – have published our report “Safe Routes from the Perspective of Young Refugees: Our response to the New Plan for Immigration.”

The Government’s new plans to reform the asylum system rip up asylum rights for the majority of refugees arriving in Britain and don’t include any new safe routes to sanctuary.

Earlier this year they asked for people to submit their thoughts on the plans – which we did in this report.

Check out the report here and help share it with your friends and family.

This report was the work of 26 different young people from Safe Passage Young Leaders and two other young refugee groups: The KRAN Youth Forum and Hummingbird Young Leaders.

Some of us came to the UK through the now-closed family reunion route, others had brothers and sisters join them here. All of us have experience of migration and the asylum system – and an understanding of what needs to change.

As a Syrian refugee, I was fortunate to come to the UK with my family through the Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme. I am now safe and settled here, studying at college with big dreams for the future. Many others who have fled war and persecution were not as fortunate, and they need safe routes now.

I know what it is like to be separated from my family – for many years I was apart from my brother, and it was very painful. I am so thankful to be reunited with him now.

Family is the basis of society.

Whoever we are, we don’t feel complete if we are without our families.

That’s why we’re calling on the Government to make improving refugee family reunion a priority – because right now too many families are apart. They must:

  • Make urgent changes to refugee family reunion under the UK’s Immigration Rules.
  • Ensure that all refugees have the right to be reunited with their family members, no matter how they entered the UK.
  • Agree a deal with the EU to strengthen family reunion so that the process is faster and smoother.

No child should be apart from their family.

Let’s help them feel safe!

Let’s stop them from taking dangerous routes!

Let’s reach out to the Government together by sharing this report!

Please check out our report and share it with your friends and family!

Kind regards,

Nouran
