Bid to free Manning launched as explosive new evidence threatens to end Assange extradition

24 February 2020 — The Canary

By Tom Coburg

Lawyers acting on behalf of imprisoned whistleblower Chelsea Manning have lodged a motion, arguing for her release. This comes as WikiLeaks tweeted that Julian Assange‘s lawyers intend to produce ‘bombshell’ evidence at next week’s extradition hearing.

Meanwhile, more evidence has emerged to further the argument that the extradition hearings should end on the grounds of extreme prejudice by UK authorities.

Julian Assange News Links 24 February 2020

Note the BBC headlines below (and elsewhere of course); they invariably emphasise the negative aspects, negative for Assange of course. So,  ‘Julian Assange ‘put lives at risk’ by sharing unredacted files’; ‘Julian Assange: Trump ‘offered pardon for Russia denial’; or, ‘just the so-called facts,  ‘Julian Assange: What is extradition and how does it work?’. Then there’s the ‘personal’, ‘Julian Assange: Father fears ‘worried’ son’s extradition’. But the most striking thing about the BBC’s coverage is that there isn’t any to speak of! The stories above cover the period 7 February 2020 to today, just a handful, not even. And this is the BBC, allegedly the leading, most trusted, news organisation on the planet, famed for its objectivity, that it always presents all sides of a story. And I’m only dealing with the headlines! WB

How we stay blind to the story of power

24 February 2020 — Jonathan Cook

If one thing drives me to write, especially these blog posts, it is the urgent need for us to start understanding power. Power is the force that shapes almost everything about our lives and our deaths. There is no more important issue. Understanding power and overcoming it through that understanding is the only path to liberation we can take as individuals, as societies, and as a species.

We’re Asking One Question In Assange’s Case: Should Journalists Be Punished For Exposing War Crimes?

24 February 2020 — Caitlin Johnson

This is a speech I gave yesterday at a demonstration for Assange with the Socialist Equality Party Australia.

Tomorrow in the UK a judge will start the process of answering a very important question. It’s a question that many of us knew was the heart of this debate back in 2010, ten years ago, when this all started. It’s a question that they have been obfuscating, bloviating, huffily denying, smearing, gaslighting, and distracting from–basically doing anything they can to hide it from view.

Socialism rises like a phoenix to haunt America

24 February 2020 — Indian Punchline

The race for Democratic Nomination in the upcoming US presidential election in November has electrified with the huge victory by Bernie Sanders in the Nevada primary on Saturday. The race has crossed a critical milestone. The primaries so far gave us a sampling of the trend in two regions of America — the American heartland (Iowa) and the Northeast (New Hampshire) — that Sanders is at the top of the heap of Democratic contenders.
